6 GENERAL SESSION HIGHLIGHTS The Banknote Conference provides our delegates with a wide range of informative and thought-provoking presentations from the leaders in the public and private sectors of the banknote industry. The presentations focus on the latest technologies and trends in the design, security, durability, production, quality and circulation in the world s banknotes. The following provides an overview of some of the presentations that you will hear at the upcoming conference. We are pleased to offer full English/Spanish translation during all General Session presentations. Designing, Producing and Issuing a New Series New Norwegian Banknote Series Norges Bank Trond Eklund, Chief Cashier A comprehensive review of the process utilized by the Norges Bank in designing, producing and issuing a new banknote series. Topics include: choosing a theme, design elements, security features, selecting substrate, public education, and issuing strategy. This is a comprehensive look at all the aspects faced by a Central Bank when considering a new series. This presentation will interest any Central Bank considering a design change and any supplier considering meeting the future needs of Central Banks involved in a design change. A New Take on a Swiss Original Swiss National Bank In April 2016, the Swiss National Bank (SNB) will issue the new 50-franc note the first denomination in the ninth banknote series. The complex new Swiss banknote combines innovative security features and sophisticated design. Developing a secure, high-quality new banknote series that is also innovative is time-consuming. There were various challenges to overcome in all stages of the project the initial idea, planning, informing the public and issuance. In this presentation, the SNB will report on challenges and experiences regarding organisation, technical development and design. The designer, Manuela Pfrunder, will present her design concept too, and explain her experience and the challenges she faced, particularly regarding the conflict between the aesthetics, function and suitability for production of a banknote. The Next U.S. Series and the Need for Meaningful Access Bureau of Engraving and Printing Len Olijar, Director Mr. Olijar will provide an update on the ongoing process to design the next series of U.S. banknotes and the current status of that project. The presentation will review the challenges of enhancing security, providing new features for the visually impaired, as well as changing the people portrayed on U.S. currency for the first time in 90 years, to include a woman. The presentation will focus on efforts to develop new security features and the selection process. Mr. Olijar will also cover the U.S. Department of the Treasury s multi-pronged approach to providing meaningful access to U.S. currency for the visually impaired.

7 Printing Technology Fundamental Research on Improving the Tactile Properties of Printed Sheets National Printing Bureau of Japan The National Printing Bureau has conducted research and testing to maximize the tactility of intaglio printing. The presentation will focus on the results of testing a wide range of patterns made up of dots, lines and grids with 150 people to identify the most recognizable combination. The Printing Bureau will share their results and recommendations for maximizing tactility. Issue and Circulation of Banknotes New Approaches to Educating a Global Public About U.S. Currency The Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System The Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System will present a summary of recent education initiatives in support of their global banknote education program. Topics covered will include insights from the launch of the uscurrency.gov educational website, as well as an update from two major international and domestic outreach efforts. Issues addressed will range from tactics to improve search engine optimization to best practices for using partners to spread educational messages. Banknote Substrate Durability: A Live Circulation Comparative Study Banque du Liban (Lebanon) Mazen Hamdan, Director, Cash Operations Department This presentation will cover the design and execution of an extremely comprehensive and live circulation trial of banknotes aimed at measuring their durability during actual circulation. The trial is based on studying the evolution, with time, and the durability of 11 million banknotes, from the lowest denomination, in circulation. The trial banknotes have the same design of the banknotes in circulation and belong to 11 groups, representing several substrates, varnishing and intaglio printing. Trial banknotes will be produced on seven well-known substrates and a variation of varnishing and intaglio printing. In addition to substrates and printing techniques, the proposition considers the public habits in dealing with banknotes and the climate variation, including all the consequences related to reasons behind unfit banknotes such as soiling, humidity, etc Future Demand for Cash Bank of England Victoria Cleland, Chief Cashier and Director of Notes This presentation will examine the demand for banknotes in the UK and how that demand has evolved in recent years. It will also explore the factors that are likely to influence demand in the future, like developments in alternative payment technologies, alternative currencies, retailer and financial institution preferences, the impact that potential government interventions might have, socio-economic developments and finally, the public's attitude towards cash. We will hear Bank of England's perspective on what these factors could mean for the currency industry in the future.

8 GENERAL SESSION HIGHLIGHTS Issue and Circulation of Banknotes, continued Re-Circulation of Currency in Ghana Update on Policy and Technology Bank of Ghana Catherine Ashiley, Head, Currency Management Department This presentation shares a case study of how Ghana has developed and implemented a clean note policy and the technologies required by both the Central Bank and the commercial sector. Topics covered include: Requirements that only banknotes that have been authenticated (i.e., verified for counterfeits) and fitness sorted should be paid over the counter by banks or through their cash dispensing machines. Cash machines must be duly certified by the Bank and issued with an approved certification to be used for processing cash for re-issue. Banknotes can be deposited at Bank of Ghana only after such deposits have been authenticated and fitness sorted. All processed UNFIT banknotes are to be returned to Bank of Ghana. Counterfeit notes and banknotes suspected as counterfeits shall be immediately handed over to Bank of Ghana. Eddies, Bunching, Fluff, and Goo How the Federal Reserve Manages Currency Quality Cash Product Office, U.S. Federal Reserve System Managing the quality of $1.3 trillion of currency in circulation is no easy task. The Cash Product Office (CPO) will share how the Federal Reserve utilizes a portfolio of sensors, surveys, and standards to maintain currency in circulation that is fit for commerce and why things like eddies, bunching, fluff, and goo matter. The CPO will explain how the Federal Reserve System uses technology and circulation guidelines to control the quality of notes in circulation in an extremely cost effective manner. This presentation will provide some interesting ideas for other Central Banks looking to maximize the life and efficiency of their circulating banknotes. New Technologies, Features, and Materials KINEGRAM COLORS Security Through Enhancement LEONHARD KURZ Stiftung & Co. Peter Mühlfelder, Head of Business Area Security, Managing Director OVD Kinegram AG Mr. Mühlfelder will introduce and demonstrate the enhanced document security that can be obtained by the KINEGRAM COLORS technology, which sets new benchmarks for foil security features. KINEGRAM COLORS allows for the incorporation of different diffractive elements in different colors within one single foil element, creating a multiplecolored foil where the colors are in perfect register with the individual design elements. This is a milestone in the efforts at intuitive public recognition and authentication.

9 From highly technical presentations announcing innovative security features to enforcement agencies sharing best practices in the fight against counterfeit money, the agenda will be packed with best-in-class knowledge and expertise. New Technologies, Features, and Materials, continued Guardian with Clarity C and Verus A New Paradigm in Banknote Security Innovia Security With a track record of innovation established with the delivery of the first polymer banknote in the world in 1988, Guardian has moved from a disruptive outsider to an accepted and trusted banknote substrate that has consistently proven its benefits in a wide range of banknote handling environments. This presentation will demonstrate the benefits of combining three key products. Over recent years, Innovia has pursued a plan to expand its anti-counterfeit proposition to combine three key products Guardian with Clarity C and Verus to provide a synergistic approach to security. This presentation will explain how these key products work together to create a counterfeit-shield approach that delivers expanded banknote security, taking pressure off the total cash cycle by diminishing the systemic costs of handling counterfeits. Innovative, Integrated, Ingenious Banknotes The Heart of Cash Cycle Security Giesecke & Devrient/Louisenthal Dr. Wolfram Seidemann, Chairman of the Board of Managing Directors This presentation focuses on the task of finding new intelligent combinations of design and effects across the many technologies and production steps of a banknote. Crossreferencing recognizable and interesting images in paper, print and applied features simplifies the authentication process and augments the interest in the note design. Banknote security can be significantly enhanced when similar effects are created with different technologies at different stages of the production value chain. Dr. Seidemann will present exciting and sophisticated banknote concepts for an efficient cash cycle and to stay ahead of counterfeiters. The Safeguard Journey De La Rue Since the launch of De La Rue s Safeguard in 2012, it has been sold to 14 Issuing Authorities. Ten denominations are in circulation and a further 23 denominations will be issued over the next two years (information correct as at October 2015). This journey has been fast paced and continues to gain momentum. The questions that will be answered in this presentation include WHY Central Banks are increasingly becoming more interested in polymer banknotes; HOW is De La Rue breaking the boundaries to create innovative and secure polymer banknote designs; and WHAT types of new security features will be developed for polymer in the future.

11 PANEL DISCUSSIONS A Balancing Act Pushing the Technology Envelope while Maintaining Manufacturability A fascinating discussion between representatives of the Central Banks and of the supplier industry concerning their views on balancing the need to push the stateof-the-art anti-counterfeiting technology and exacting quality specifications with the ability to consistently produce banknotes. Participants will discuss their views on the risks and rewards of employing new technologies, the implications of tighter specifications and a road toward better cooperation to maximize results. Central Bank Round Table Discussion: Insights of Challenges, Opportunities, Views and Perspectives This panel of key Central Bankers will be given the opportunity to express their views and perspectives on a variety of issues that are of great interest to them and to the stakeholders in the banknote industry. Through a series of the most relevant questions, we will also get a glimpse into understanding their challenges and opportunities for the future. U.S. Bureau of Engraving & Printing Tour As the Government s only source for paper currency production, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) prints billions of Federal Reserve Notes for delivery to the Federal Reserve System each year. The BEP s research and development efforts focus on the continued use of automation in the production process and on counterfeit deterrent technologies for use in security documents, especially U.S. Currency. During the tour, our conference delegates will have the opportunity to see all areas where U. S. paper currency is printed, stacked, cut and examined for defects. During the tour, you ll see millions of dollars of all denominations rolling off the presses. The Bureau prints about $700 million in notes every day.
