The IBDA World Banknote Project International Banknote Designer Initiative

The World Banknote Project - What is it? The World Banknote Project (WBP) is an IBDA-driven initiative in partnership with the world s banknote designer community. Our role is to facilitate the free and creative expression of banknote designer s vision of what the future banknote will look like. Oscar Wilde once wrote; 'to define is to limit'. For this reason we will not impose the current range of technical limitations or parametres on the WBP participants since their mission is to present to us their vision of the future, not today and in the future, we do not know what technical possibilities will exist. Banknote industry actors are fully aware of the massive change taking place on the global payments landscape and the WBP initiative has been developed to proactively encourage banknote designers to embrace this change and think 'out-of-the-box' when imagining what their future will look like. We are experiencing a fundamental transition in the use of cash across the world as part of an emerging multi-payment economy. The payments landscape will continue to include cash as a payments tool but all actors need to modernise how cash is used. This will not only involve central banks, commercial banks, cash processing service providers. It will ultimately put a whole new set of requirements on all of us and the design of a banknote will be a critical factor that determines the position occupies by cash in this emerging global multi-payment economy. Never before has banknote design had such an important role to play in defining the position occupied by cash in this new multi-payment economy. This must be everyone s highest priority and to survive and succeed in this new payments landscape we must put aside our competitive tendencies and learn to work together in a way we have never done before. Our collective challenge is to ensure that cash continues to be demanded by all users and the WBP has been developed to allow designers express how they believe they can contribute to this. Who Will Be Interested in the WBP? The WBP will be of interest to the following groups: Designers The WBP is an opportunity for banknotes to showcase their own knowledge, experience and design skills. This is a truly unique opportunity for a banknote designer to present their very own interpretation of what the banknote of the future will look like. In the absence of any customer deadlines, requirements, limitations or technical parametres, the designer is free to think out-of-the-box and present their vision of what a banknote should look like and explain why. The WBP provides the platform for designer expression and allows them to tell their story to the world. Printers Banknote printers around the world convert and add value to the designs developed by the designer community and are frequently bound by the same limitations and restrictions as the designer. Budgets, delivery dates, waste margins and efficiency levels are the active barometers by which the printer s performance is measured. The WBP goes beyond the traditional definitions of performance and focuses actively on design content, giving printers a glimpse of what is inside the designers head and an idea of what types of banknotes they may be printing in the future. Central Bankers The international Central Bank Community will enjoy a fresh and provocative perspective on what banknote design can look like if designers are afforded greater liberty and scope to explore their imagination and push specifications beyond what is possible today. It is only by pushing beyond todays limitations that we can continue to evolve and get better. The WBP is intended to act as a showcase for the international banknote community to see and appreciate how much more can be achieved in the domain of banknote design if we are not limited by what is simply possible today, and if we focus more on what may be possible tomorrow. Technology Developers Technology developers simply cannot afford to ignore the WBP. This initiative opens a window into the mind of the designer and allows you to align R&D activity to what the designer wants and needs to create tomorrows banknotes. While many of the designs presented in the WBP may be surreal or considered simply too daring, the WBP will provide precious insight into which direction designers see evolution in substrates and features going and how they need to be supported. Technology developers may also actively work with designers on a WBP design to showcase how their substrates/technologies can be exploited to bring improved functionality and value to the banknote design.

The WBP - Why Are We Doing it? To date all IBDA activity (and that of other industry organisations, conferences etc.) has been to present what has been achieved and what the current state of play is. The WBP will project us all into the future and allow us to catch a glimpse of what the banknote of the future may look like. In essence the WBP is a platform to facilitate designers to produce their very own concept banknote design and for the first time ever (for most designers) produce a banknote design and concept that captures their wealth of experience, knowledge, passion and dreams for the future. The WBP Symbolism, Thematic and Guidelines? Nobody really knows what the future banknote will look like. For this exact reason our mission is to afford the WBP Designer the maximum level of freedom and latitude in developing their WBP design. WBP Designers should try to incorporate imagery, symbolism and their interpretation of a specific theme or 'storyboard' in their WBP design. This will allow them to tell their story and apply context and logic to why and how their design was elaborated in a certain direction. While no caveats or recommendations will be imposed on the selection of a theme or 'storyboard', the WBP Designer should be able to link the design with a specific story (fictional or real). Your WBP design may be a real, virtual or hybrid banknote featuring all or none of the current banknote security technologies. It may be 2 dimensional, 3 dimensional or even 4 dimensional. It is up to you to decide what the future world of banknotes will look like. WBP Designers are free to decide on the format, presence or absence of the following key conceptual components in their WBP design: Numeral/Denomination Unit/Name of Currency Portrait/other central symbols Banknote orientation Banknote dimensions Banknote colour scheme Substrate type/content/colour Feature type/content/configuration However, it is recommended that the WBP Designer includes a representative selection of the following elements in their WBP design, depending on the context, or actual/ fictional cash cycle landscape they envisage their banknote designs circulating in: Level 1 Features (or features/ technologies that communicate with people) Level 2 Features (or features/ technologies that communicate with machines) Level 3 Features (or features/ technologies that communicate with final stage re- cycling/ forensic analysis activity) The rest is entirely up to the WBP Designer and we sincerely hope they will amaze us with their creations. The genesis of a WBP design should be inspired and drive by the collective global culture and preferences of banknote users (human and machines) in much the same way as current banknote design activity is inspired by singular national cultures.

The WBP - How Are We Doing it? We aim to launch the World Banknote Project at the 4th IBDC, in Paris France from September All IBDA Members will be invited to participate in the World Banknote Project providing they meet the simple criteria mentioned below (Who Can Participate?). Upon registration for the World Banknote Project, participants will receive a WBP Starter pack containing all relevant information pertaining to this unique initiative. Participants will be required to sign a Commitment to Complete Work and a legal disclaimer, allowing the IBDA to publish and reproduce their designs for illustration purposes. Once these two documents have been received by the IBDA, the registration process is complete and valid and the participant is accepted as a World Banknote Project Designer. The World Banknote Project Designer will then be required to respect the following milestones and plan: Milestone N Date Action September 2016 Registration for WBP at 4th IBDC 2 19 Sept. 23 Oct On-line Registration for WBP 3 30 October Final date for Return of signed WBP documents to IBDA 4 30 November 2016 Final date for confirmation of WBP designer registration by IBDA 5 01 March 2017 Update by WBP Designer to IBDA (summary of 300 words + some Work-in-Progress images) 6 01 April April 2017 Create WBP Pages at including WBP Designer profiles, artwork and progressive iterations of each WBP Designers World Banknote. 5 The WBP - Who Can Participate? Any IBDA Member who has a demonstrated capacity to create a banknote design and use the appropriate design software tools may apply to participate in the WBP. Our goal is not to preclude interested parties who may not realise banknote designs on a day-to-day basis but to promote diversity, different perspectives, styles and interpretations of what a banknote will look like in the future. Our objective is not to score or determine which is the 'best' design. It is to simply facilitate a process which in it s own right will generate a tremendous level of energy, creative thinking and provide food for thought for those with an interest in banknote design. We also wish to move the spotlight back to the designers who actually create the designs and let them tell their stories, explain their thought processes and defend their design content and choices. In summary, the WBP is an initiative designed to stimulate interest in and a different way of thinking about the way banknotes are conceptualised and created. The absolute credential necessary to apply to become a WBP Designer are as follows: Be an IBDA Member Be capable of realising at least one banknote design according to the project plan above Be capable of committing to the schedule of work required for the WBP and signing the legal document of commitment accordingly Be in agreement to authorise the IBDA to reproduce your WBP design for the purposes of the creation of a WBP commemorative book World Banknote Project participants can also post updates, exchange information and artwork/images via this website and you can track project and specific design progress and evolution via the site. All validated WBP Designers will receive a address allowing them exchange such information privately and discretely from the workplace or home without the need to divulge their professional or personal mail addresses and/or details. The WBP - How Can You Participate? Application to become a WBP Designer is simple and fast. You can either complete the application form on the back of this brochure and send it to the IBDA (by scan of fax) or alternatively complete and send the on-line WBP application form available at Please note that all WBP Designers must provide files to the IBDA containing their designs in a.pdf file format no later than 30 June What will the WBP Output Be? The World Banknote Project is intended to be a milestone initiative within our industry and it is hoped that the results of the project will stimulate and catalyse our industry to think differently about the whole subject of banknote design. In order to give maximum visibility to World Banknote Designs a wide scope of events and communication media are planned in 2018 including the following: Central Theme for 5 th IBDC Your opportunity to tell your story via conference presentation WBP Exhibition during 5 th IBDC Your opportunity to present your design and explain WBP Creative Lab A Chance for all WBP Designers to meet and open a dialogue and discussion on the future of design Social Media and Update Postings A platform provided by the IBDA for WBP Designers to share ideas, knowledge and solicit support from other designers and/or technology developers in an effort to improve regular contact between designers and design partners around the world.

Commemorative Publication Reaching out to the wider banknote community to stimulate and provoke thought Presentations at other conferences Creating exposure and reach for WBP designers and their work Banknotisation & printing of certain designs Demonstrating that the dream can become a reality and how Creation of IBDA Working Groups Following up on your dreams and vision to make it all possible in the future Financial contribution to IBDA The 5th IBDC will be entirely dedicated to the WBP with presentations, workshops, panel discussions and a dedicated exhibition on this theme. Who Will Give Feedback on Your WBP Design? The IBDA will assemble a WBP Feedback Group who will support WBP designers at any stage during their activity. The role of this group of experts is to provide the WBP designer with objective and constructive comments and criticism as his /her design evolves. Banknote Design Banknote Issuing Banknote Automation Banknote Research & Development Cash Cycle Management Forensic Ananlysis This WBP Feedback group will be composed of recognised experts from the following fields: How Can You Support the WBP Without Becoming a WBP Designer? Spread the word. Like all milestone initiatives a certain amount of buzz or inertia is required to get the ball going and generate interest. You can help us by: Telling your colleagues and management about the WBP and distributing hard/digital cpies of the WBP brochure accordingly. Telling other designers you may know about the WBP and actively encouraging them to participate. If a member of your organisation has already decided to become a WBP Designer, you can encourage and support him/her in his endeavours to develop a WBP design. Encourage your WBP Designer to make a presentation based on his/her WBP design at the 5th IBDC. If you are the employer of a WBP Designer, you could allow him/her a certain number of hours per week/month to work on his/her WBP design. Check for regular updates at Write postings and comments on the WBP blog and help WBP Designers by answering their questions and/or requests for support at Reserve one or more WBP Commemorative Books for your organisation. To help you help us we have prepared the following World Banknote Project media that you can easily download from and distribute to your colleagues and contacts within our community: WBP Logos WBP Information Packs List of WBP Designers Preview of WBP Commemorative Book Updates and comments from WBP Designers
