1 AMR Conference: 26-27th April 2018 SULSA s Antimicrobial Resistance Conference Event Programme Day One: Research Day Two: Policy Thursday 26th Friday 27th April 2018 Technology and Innovation Centre Glasgow 1
2 SULSA The Scottish Universities Life Science Alliance (SULSA) is a strategic alliance between nine Scottish Universities that aims to enhance Scotland s vibrant life sciences research community by improving opportunities for collaboration, innovation, funding and translational research. In doing so, we seek to increase the level of high quality life sciences research being conducted in Scotland and improve Scotland s global reputation in the life sciences. 2
3 Dear Delegate, I would like to personally welcome you to SULSA s Antimicrobial Resistance Conference. This is our first conference for some time and I m thrilled to say we sold out. This shows the breadth and strength of interest in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Scotland. Antimicrobial resistance is one of the major challenges facing the world today. With the UK AMR strategy being refreshed this year, it is a perfect time to bring together major players in the AMR scene to showcase, discuss, challenge and plan how we can work together to address this huge issue. Over the next two days you will hear from researchers, industry, public health workers and clinicians, funders and government who will present their research, knowledge and experience in their areas. We have scheduled thought-provoking panel discussions and breakout sessions so that you can delve into specific topics in more depth. The poster sessions will enable you to see even more of the exciting AMR research taking place in Scotland. One of SULSA s main aims is to support researchers from around Scotland to collaborate together more effectively and successfully. To help achieve this, we will be launching a seed-funding call for delegates after the conference, and we hope these new projects and collaborations will spark long-standing, effective and fruitful research programmes. I ask that you participate throughout the conference and help us shape the future of AMR research in Scotland. Professor Mike Barrett SULSA Director #sulsa AMR 3
4 ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE Is an antimicrobial resistance Armageddon upon us? Are the drugs that have kept infectious agents at bay for decades about to fail? An influential UK government report has predicted that by 2050 we might be seeing as many as 10 million deaths globally caused by antimicrobial resistant infections which will also place an annual economic burden on societies running as high as a hundred trillion pounds per year. For over 60 years we have taken it for granted that we are unlikely to be killed by bacterial infections. Just 100 years ago, diseases like tuberculosis, typhoid, cholera, bacterial pneumonia and sepsis accounted for around half of all deaths. Average life expectancy is now twice what it was back then. This change can be attributed, in part, to a serendipitous discovery by a young Scottish doctor, Alexander Fleming, from Darvel in Ayrshire, who is credited with discovering a class of chemicals that we now call antibiotics back in Before Fleming, Lord Lister, professor of medicine at Glasgow University in the mid-nineteenth Century, had introduced chemical antisepsis as the first major effort to stem infection. Scotland remains at the forefront of research into antimicrobial resistance and our Universities, in conjunction with several innovative companies, are again pioneering efforts to confront the impending crisis in antimicrobial resistance. See our SULSA War on Germs article in your delegate bag for more of the story! 4
