2 The Northern Regional College is working with schools to develop an exciting and innovative vocational curriculum which is relevant to the opportunities available within the world of commerce and industry. This curriculum is part of the Entitlement Framework offering which will allow wider student choice at Key stage 4 and beyond. Schools work in partnership with Northern Regional College to enhance the experience of students while they work in Workshops, Restaurants, Television Studios etc which are equipped to industrial standards. 2

4 Occupational Studies - General Overview Aim of this qualification This qualification has been developed by CCEA to give students an understanding and experience of the practical aspects of various vocations. The skills gained during this course will enable students to develop a realistic working relationship with the real world-of-work. You will study Most students study for two single awards over year 11 and year 12 undertaking 2 units each year. 60% of the marks are awarded for undertaking the practical activities; the remaining 40% are equally divided between underpinning knowledge related to the practical tasks and a student evaluation of the work which they have carried out. The course lasts One year. An additional single award in Occupational Studies may be studied in year 12. All units within Occupational Studies contain specification which relates to careers, health and safety and environmental issues. The course will lead to Successful candidates progressing to a recognised Apprenticeship or a course of further study at level two or three. The qualification grading has been aligned to GCSE grades as outlined below. 4

8 Business and Services Beauty Facial Skin Care () / Manicure and Nail Art () On completion of these units the facial therapist shall have: Developed the necessary skills to carry out a client evaluation. Recommended treatment to suit the client s skin type and condition. Developed a treatment plan, including time and cost with the client and then recorded accurately. Prepared an area and ensure self and client meets salon requirements with reference to materials, equipment and health and safety. Applied facial products in a cost effective manner and in accordance with manufacturers guidelines, leaving the skin clean and exfoliated. Massage techniques which are smooth and flowing and followed by mask application in an appropriate manner. Applied manicure products in a cost effective manner and comply with manufacturers guidelines. The ability to file the free edge; treat the cuticles and leave them neat and undamaged. Massage techniques which are smooth and flowing and followed by correct application of varnish to meet client needs. Aftercare advice is given and recorded onto the treatment card. The ability to provide nail polishing treatments and nail decoration. The ability to demonstrate the consideration of environmental issues relating to the use and disposal of products. *This course will be delivered in professional salons at Northern Regional College. 8

9 Business and Services Catering Customer Service (Food & Drink Service ) This unit providers learners with a basic understanding of promoting themselves and their organisation by providing excellent customer care, dealing with all types of customers and how to plan for improvements to customer service in an organisation. Learners will reflect on their own attitude and skills and how they can be improved to become more successful in building positive relationships with customers and working effectively as part of a team. Learners will study the importance of customer care within a range of employment sectors. They will also be aware of legislation covering the rights of employees and customers and the importance of using customer options to plan improvements to customer service in an organisation. This unit gives learners an understanding of: Legislation relating to health and safety in the workplace. How to create an excellent first impression. Communicating with customers and responding to enquiries. Dealing with customers needs and complaints. Obtaining customer feedback. Developing plans to improve customer service. Careers in customer service. Environmental issues in customer service. Reviewing and evaluating performance. 9

10 Business and Services Catering Contemporary Cuisine () This unit provides learners with some of the basic cooking principles required by cooks and chefs in the catering industry when preparing and cooking a range of starters, main courses and desserts. Learners will apply legislative requirements when handling food and learn how to work safely and hygienically in the catering kitchen. They will learn how to select and use appropriate equipment correctly and will develop creative skills in the finishing and presentation of products for service. The unit also offers an opportunity to understand the scope of the catering industry, including career opportunities. Starters Learners studying this unit would expect to: prepare, cook and finish four different starters, including at least one soup, at least one cold starter and one hot starter. ensure the dish is the correct flavour, colour, texture and quantity. use their creative skills to present the dishes in a manner suitable for service in a modern restaurant, including garnishing, portioning and presentation. Mains Learners should be able to: prepare, cook and finish four different mains dishes. use a range of foods in the selection of the above dishes to include chicken, cheese and either fish or meat, with at least one dish suitable for a vegetarian. correctly carry out four of the following cooking methods according to the dish requirements: grilling, frying, boiling, steaming, roasting or microwaving. 10

Desserts Learners should be able to: prepare, cook and finish four different desserts, two of which should be hot and two cold; use a range of foods in the above dishes to include fresh and preprepared fruit, an egg-based dessert and a biscuit-based dessert; use finishing methods and creative skills to present the dishes in a manner suitable for service in a modern restaurant, including garnishing, piping, portioning, glazing and slicing; 11

12 Business and Services Vehicle Studies Vehicle Servicing () / Valeting Operations () This unit covers two topics vehicle servicing and vehicle valeting, both of which are common and can be linked to popular everyday jobs/ tasks in modern garages today. The idea of this unit is to introduce students to the correct procedures and the importance of carrying out regular servicing and valeting of vehicles. On completion of this unit the Vehicle studies students will have demonstrated how to carry out a vehicle service to include the following areas: different types of wheels engine oil and filter air filters fuel filters (petrol or diesel) spark plugs alternator belt hoses coolant brake lining lighting systems They will also have: demonstrated how to carry out post service checks on vehicles. demonstrated how to complete a job card or service check sheet. demonstrated how to report and record any faults/problems found. demonstrated how to safely and properly dispose of waste products and clean work area. *This course will be delivered in professional workshops at Northern Regional College. 12

13 Business and Services Vehicle Studies Logistics () / Transport () This unit is designed to give learners an appreciation of the importance of the Logistics and Transport sectors to the development of the local economy and the ability to trade. Learners will acquire an insight into the framework within which transport must operate and will be introduced to the characteristics of the various modes of transport systems. The unit will also create an awareness of the environmental impacts of transport, how it contributes to social inclusion and how accessibility and sustainable travel can be promoted. On completion of this unit the Vehicle studies students will have: Carried out a presentation of the logistics activities and supply chain issues of a local Business. Planned and calculated the cost of a journey for any mode of travel, using maps and timetables showing how environmental impacts could be reduced. Carried out a travel and speed survey and present findings and presented a plan for the implementation of relevant safety control measures. *This course will be delivered in professional workshops at Northern Regional College. 13

14 Business and Services Child Care The Play Environment () The unit will introduce learners to working with children in a childcare environment. This unit focuses on the importance of play and children s development. It is suitable for those who are interested in child development and would like to work with children in the future. The unit is divided in three sections as follows: Play and Language Development Reading with Children Play Games with Children The Physical Care of Babies () This unit is suitable for learners who wish to develop an understanding of the physical care needs of babies. It will enable learners to identify the basic care needs of a baby and develop their knowledge and practical skills to meet these needs. Learners will not be expected to have access to babies. Learning should be promoted through role play, discussion and practical activities. The unit is divided in three sections as follows: Hygiene Requirements of Babies Equipment and Clothing for Babies Feeding Babies 14

15 Construction Brick and Block work () This unit is designed to develop the skills associated with Brick and Block laying using appropriate tools and materials, following safe working practices. On completion of this unit the Brick and Block work studies students will have learnt: Health and safety with respect to workshop activities. The appropriate use of basic brickwork hand tools. Dry bonding of half-brick and one-brick thick walls in various bonds using both brick and block. Construction of a range of brickwork models in half brick and solid walling. The use of appropriate resources and their effect on the environment. *This course will be delivered in the vocational workshops at Northern Regional College. Tiling () This unit is designed to provide increased vocational skills in tiling and associated activities. On completion of this unit the Tiling studies students will have learnt: Health and safety with respect to tiling activities. The appropriate use of basic tiling hand tools. The use of different types of tiles and the effect their manufacture and transport have on the environment. Marking out and cutting tiles to required drawings. Tile an area of wall including the edges of a window, a border or pattern and make cuts for a double socket. *This course will be delivered in the vocational workshops at Northern Regional College. Hard Landscaping () This unit is designed to develop the skills associated with Hard Landscaping which includes Brickwork, building steps, flagging and brick paving using appropriate tools and materials. 15

16 Construction Bench Joinery / Carpentry & Joinery (2 Units) These units are designed to provide increased vocational skills in Carpentry, Joinery, Bench Joinery, and associated activities. On completion of these units the Bench Joinery / Carpentry and Joinery studies students will have learnt: Health, safety and basic hand tools. The use of basic hand tools and their maintenance. Craft techniques and associated knowledge. Learners will manufacture a product from wood which they can take home in each of these units. Typical projects would be a wooden table, steps etc. *This course will be delivered in the vocational workshops at Northern Regional College. Plastering () This unit can be taken in Ballymena or Magherafelt only in partnership with Brick and Block work or Tiling) This unit is designed to develop vocational skills in plastering and associated activities. On completion of this unit the Plastering studies students will have learnt: Health and safety with respect to tiling activities. The appropriate use of basic plastering hand tools. The use of appropriate plastering resources and their effect on the environment. Fix plasterboard. Applying a scratch coat to a wall. Applying and finishing a plain rendering to a wall. *This course will be delivered in the vocational workshops at Northern Regional College. 16

17 Design and Creativity Hairdressing Creative Styling using Blow Drying Techniques (s) This unit is designed to provide learners with a basic understanding of blow-drying techniques within hairdressing. It will provide learners with an opportunity to learn how to carry out a client consultation, and to provide suitable advice and guidance on hair design. Learners will develop knowledge and skill in a range of hairstyling techniques on both long and short hair. Learners will acquire experience in the use of a range of styling tools, brushes and styling products, and will create a range of hairstyles. *This course will be delivered in professional salons at Northern Regional College. Creative Hairstyling on Long Hair () This unit is suitable for learners who wish to experience the occupational area of hairdressing. The learner will be required to carry out a consultation with their client, prepare and then dress the hair using a range of techniques into a current up style. On completion of this unit the learner will have gained a foundation of practical skills and theoretical knowledge to allow progression into further education aimed at pursuing a career in the hairdressing industry. *This course will be delivered in professional salons at Northern Regional College. 17

18 Design and Creativity Catering Specialised Crafts () This unit will allow learners to gain an understanding of a specialised catering craft such as Sugar Craft. The emphasis will be on developing skills within a chosen area through the use of materials, techniques and processes. Creativity and innovation are the key factors within this unit. Learners will finish the unit with the knowledge that research, planning, developing ideas creatively, working within time restraints, interpersonal skills and presenting a craft are all important elements in any craft. *This course will be delivered in professional kitchens at Northern Regional College. 18

19 Design and Creativity Catering Patisserie and Baking () On completion of these units the catering students will have: Identified a range of local catering outlets. Prepared, baked and finished four different products for example wheaten bread, soda bread, sundried tomato and herb focaccia, or naan, bread. Baked two different types of scones, for example cherry, raspberry and chocolate or apple and cinnamon. Used glazing, icing, filling and decorating methods to finish the products. Presented each of the products as if for sale in one of these ways: in a bakery in individual portions at a coffee morning An understanding of healthy eating options when making bread and scones. Prepared, baked and decorated four different cake and biscuit products, cupcakes, chocolate gateau, strawberry swiss roll or carrot cake and biscuits may include caramel shortbread or chocolate and ginger oat biscuits. Prepared, baked and finished four different pastry products, such as fruit tartlets, chocolate éclairs or filo fruit wraps. *This course will be delivered in professional kitchens at Northern Regional College. 19

20 Engineering and Engineering Services CAD Computer Aided Design () (Newtownabbey Year 12 Only) This unit is based on the learner developing basic skills in the use of an industrial standard Computer Aided Design (CAD) drafting package. This unit requires the student to: Understand the basic principles of technical drawings. Have knowledge of the layout required, i.e. position of plans, end and front elevation for simple drawings. Use their CAD skill to generate a title block template including text. Draw a plan view and a front view or a range of drawings from either an engineering or construction discipline. Adding dimensions to their drawings. Create a completed working drawing from their selected discipline. Plot hard copies of their working drawing and associated components. *This course will be delivered in professional engineering workshops at Northern Regional College. Manufacturing Techniques Sheet Metal () (Newtownabbey Year 12 Only) The aim of this unit is to provide students with the practical skills and basic knowledge required in the production of components manufactured from sheet metal. This unit requires the student to: Demonstrate an understanding of and apply safe working practices in the workshop. Construct sheet metal components which are made by cutting metal to size, marking out bends and rivets positions, bending up, drilling and joining using rivets. *This course will be delivered in professional engineering workshops at Northern Regional College. 20

21 Engineering and Engineering Services Plumbing () On completion of this unit the Plumbing studies students will have learnt: Health and safety with respect to workshop activities. The appropriate use of basic plumbing hand tools. The use of industrial standard materials and the effect that their extraction has on the environment. The fabrication of a range of, plumbing models, in copper and mild steel pipe work. The appropriate use of a floor standing copper bending machine. The appropriate use of a hydraulic bending machine for bending mild steel pipe. The use of a hand held threading machine. The correct method of use for pressure-test equipment. *This course will be delivered in professional building services workshops at Northern Regional College. Electrical Wiring Practices () The aim of this unit is to introduce students to wiring techniques and standards. To understand and observe safe working practices. To select and use appropriate tools and equipment. To develop wiring techniques, by wiring a range of lighting and power circuits. To follow instructions and use diagrammatic guides. To work to acceptable standards and evaluate the quality of work. To become familiar with the design and connection of a variety of electrical components. *This course will be delivered in professional building services workshops at Northern Regional College. 21

22 Engineering and Engineering Services Manufacturing Techniques - Hand Fitting () This unit is designed to give the learner a basic understanding of the practical skills and basic knowledge required in the production of assembled components manufactured from metal. This unit requires the student to: Show an understanding of the sequence in which the manufacturing operations are carried out. Drill holes of correct diameter according to a pattern or drawing, tap holes to provide internal threads. Construct sheet metal components which are made by cutting metal to size, marking out, threading, and riveting to complete a fully operational assembly. Basic Fast-Fit Operations () The idea of this unit is to introduce learners to basic fast-fit operations and components found in modern garages and motor vehicles today. Learners will also gain knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage. Learners will be able to understand basic fast-fit components to include: road wheels tyres patches plugs balance weights batteries brake pads brake discs brake shoes brake drums cooling systems exhausts springs and dampers engine oils engine oil filters 22

23 Engineering and Engineering Services Vehicle Technician Operations () The idea of this unit is to introduce learners to vehicle maintenance necessary in modern motor vehicles today. It includes the engine compartment, transmission, chassis and vehicle electrics. This unit will give learners a good grounding in these subjects and is suitable for those who may be interested in pursuing careers as motor mechanics or vehicle technicians. Learners will explore career opportunities available within the motor vehicle industry. Learners will also gain knowledge and understanding of health, safety and environmental legislation in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage. The Northern Regional College workshops are ideally equipped with industry standard resources to give learners a truly industrial experience. 23

24 Environment and Society Care Reminiscence with Individuals in a care Environment () This unit is suitable for those who wish to work in a health and social care setting and gain an understanding of the importance of talking about past experiences and making connections between the past and present. This will help the learner understand the individuals in the care environment with their unique identity. The learner will gain an understanding of how reminiscence can lead to a sense of wellbeing, promote self esteem, encourage sociability and lead to other recreational activities. The learner will explore the role of the social care worker and the importance of recalling and sharing past memories. The learner will demonstrate his/ her role in supporting individuals in reminiscence and related activities in order to promote pleasurable occupation and support self-esteem. Working in a care Environment () This unit is suitable for learners who wish to develop an understanding of working in Health, Social Care and children s and young people s settings. Northern Regional College will work with the learners to determine which best suits the interests of the learners. 24

25 Environment and Society Horticulture Caring for Plants and Flowers () This unit aims to provide the learner with the knowledge of scientific principles and skills that are necessary for the growth and care of a range of indoor and outdoor plants. The learner will investigate the care of plants in both the horticultural and floristry industries. A range of flowers and plants and their specific care requirements will be studied. The learner will be expected to demonstrate knowledge and understanding in handling and caring for a range of specimens grown in containerised displays and beds as well as presenting and arranging plants for sale. This unit will encourage entrepreneurial activities such as investigating the setting up of a small business for the sale of floral arrangements or containers and hanging baskets. Growing Plants in a Sustainable Way () The unit provides a basic understanding of plants and how to grow them. Learners will: Demonstrate how to grow seasonal plants from a range of seeds, bulbs, corms and tubers. Demonstrate the use of different types of growing mediums including homemade organic compost. Produce containerised displays incorporating two or more types of plants that have been grown by the learner. Demonstrate appropriate aftercare for the plants (humidity, temperature, water, pricking out, and weed and pest control to establish and maintain healthy growth. 25

26 Technology and Innovation Carpentry & Joinery and Bench Joinery (2 Units) These units are designed to provide increased vocational skills in Bench Joinery / Carpentry and Joinery and associated activities. 27 Technology and Innovation Digital Imaging (Unit 1) Learners will develop skills in creating digital images using a variety of applications. They will acquire skills that will allow them to learn the functions of a digital camera, to understand the different styles and genres associated with photography, edit photographs and produce digital designs for the internet, print and screen media. These skills are considered as industry standard related to Photography and Digital Design. TV and Film Production (Unit 1) This unit is about helping to gain a clearer practical hands-on experience of how you identify various types of films, known as genres. This unit will help the learner to understand the various stages and processes which are required to make a short movie, as well as screen that movie to a live audience of friends and relatives. It is also important that the learners have the opportunity to gain constructive feedback from the target audience. Learners will have the opportunity of taking their own interests in film and translating them into actual movies. Given the flexibility of editing packages in relation to moving images, the learners will be able to experience the problems and progress associated with film making. 27

28 The Northern Regional College works with 25 partner schools each year to deliver approximately 1800 units of the CCEA Occupational Studies Qualification. This school / Northern Regional College partnership has established a rigorous process of target setting and tracking for all Occupational Studies Students to create an educational framework where success is the norm. 28

29 Student Successes Success and Achievement Over the past five years Northern Regional College has achieved an average of 91.9% success rate for School partnership courses. This success is encouraged by the practical nature of the work which the students do. They carry out simulated tasks similar to the type of work that employees would do in the workplace. Northern Regional College provides an experience very similar to what students will experience in an industrial setting. We have the facilities to provide a vocational education which students will benefit greatly from. An occupational studies qualification gives students a head start for the world of work. Social Cohesion and Pastoral Care In a recent Northern Regional College wide ETI inspection the following comment was made: Much progress has been made by the College in making an important contribution to social cohesion in the community, through the integrated approach taken to the delivery of the Entitlement Framework provision. Northern Regional College work closely with schools in creating a seamless pastoral care delivery across all campuses. Occupational Studies students are supported by a school liaison officer who visits each class on the day they attend the college. 29

30 Student Successes Success beyond Occupational Studies: Northern Regional College Takes Home Gold at The Skills Show Congratulations to Ballymena apprentice Robert Hamilton who won GOLD in the carpentry & joinery category at The Skills Show in Birmingham (13-15 November). Robert the youngest competitor in this skill area is a past student of Dunclug College and was introduced to the College through the Entitlement Framework route at the age of 14 studying Construction units from the CCEA Occupational Studies qualification. This course was part of a Ballymena Learning Together partnership funded under the Entitlement Framework Programme. He is currently studying the Level 3 Apprenticeship in Site Carpentry. Robert has signed a pledge to compete for a place in Squad UK for WorldSkills Abu Dhabi

31 Celebrating Achievement CCEA Style Every year CCEA give special recognition to Occupational Studies students who excel within their area of study. The commitment and dedication of our learners is celebrated, with some being awarded Learner of the year. Northern Regional College are very proud that historically, a large number of our occupational studies students have succeeded in achieving this high accolade.
