17 ASEAN as a future innovation hub? The integration of ASEAN Community has put Southeast Asia in global spotlight as a region of strategic importance. In the meantime, ASEAN is emerging as a research and innovation hub whose research output has increased nearly three-fold in the past ten years, according to a Thomson-Reuters study. Its quality of research is also being improved as evident from the relative citation impact of its papers indexed in Web of Science, which has been exceeding world average since The number of patent applications has grown by nearly 40% in the past three years despite the fact that much of the patenting is by non-resident entities. 15
