Readers are trained on each one of the 6 scale points for each section of all three portfolios. The importance of using the scoring guidelines to make their judgments is stressed repeatedly throughout the evaluation process.
Training is done with sets of samples at a variety of score points, unlike this presentation s s organization.
*Each score point is characterized by a variety of descriptors of work that would receive that score. *Because there are only six different points on the scale, each score point represents a band or range of accomplishment. *S Some of the descriptors may seem to contradict each other because the range of possibilities for work at a given score point is so great. * The descriptors are examples; it is not expected that all the descriptors for a scale point will apply to any one particular portfolio. * The descriptors intentionally discuss general aspects of artwork at each score point; there is no preferred (or unacceptable) content or style. * The descriptors, taken as a whole, capture characteristics of work that merits each score. (from the introduction to the scoring guides)

Score of 2: Student commentary This year I was blessed with the opportunity to go to Ireland for Spring Break, and that is where the vast majority of my inspiration came from as I went throughout the year. At the beginning of my senior year I knew that come Spring Break, I would be going to Ireland, so I made this my major influence on my art work this year. When I think about Ireland I think of castles, mid evil times, cold and lush colors. All of my pictures run pretty much like a story board. So this is how I planned for it to be perceived; (1) Entitled: A Stormy Night, is of a Castle that has been caught in a lightning storm and off in the distance you can see its inhabitants fleeing on a ship (castles are of course iconic of Ireland, along with its weather). (2) Entitled: The Morning After, is just as the title implies, it is the morning after the storm hit, and off in the distance you can see the ship returning home. (3) Entitled: The Knight, you would think that every castle needs its own knight, so I gave mine one. (4) Entitled: The Blacksmiths Dwelling, the knights weapons and tools have to come from somewhere. (5) Entitled: The Unbeaten Path, which is the path heading towards the blacksmiths house. (6) Entitled: A Junction in Time. (7)& (8) Entitled: Castle in Ruins & Blarny Castle, if you look heard enough you can see each of them in pictures (1)& (2). (9) Entitled: Eire Creek, Which runsinto (10) Entitled: Cold Waterfall, which empties outinto (11) Entitled: Luna Lake. (12) is an Ink Block entitled: Irish Knot

2 WEAKCONCENTRATION 2.A There is a sense of a concentration, but integration of the etopic and dthe work is inadequately considered. ed 2.B Decision making is lacking; the work appears inadequately thought out and insufficiently explored. 2.C An idea for a concentration is presented, but the ideas in the work are unoriginal or rely mostly on appropriation. iti 2.D A potentially engaging theme is present but is largely unsuccessful. 2.E A concentration is evident, but the work shows a weak understanding or random application of design principles.
2 WEAKCONCENTRATION, cont d. 2.F Overall the work demonstrates marginal technical competence and awkward use of materials and media. 2.G The work is mostly repetitive; only a few pieces suggest growth or show slight signs of transformation. 2.H The works appear to be direct copies of published or photographic sources or the work of other artists; there is little discernible ibl student tvoice or individual id transformation.
2.A There is a sense of a concentration, ti but tintegration of the topic and the work is inadequately considered. 2.F Overall the work demonstrates marginal technical competence and awkward use of materials and media.
From the AP Studio Art poster: For your concentration, you are asked to make a commitment to the thoughtful investigation of a specific visual idea. From the student commentary: At the beginning gof my senior year I knew that come Spring Break, I would be going to Ireland, so I made this my major influence on my art work this year. When I think about Ireland I think of castles, mid evil times, cold and lush colors.
2.A There is a sense of a concentration, but integration of the topic and the work is inadequately considered. 2.B Decision making is lacking; the work appears inadequately thought out and insufficiently explored.
Score of 3
The central idea of my concentration is the intertwining of the mechanical and organic aspects of life. Steam punk fashion and my personal interests in the mechanics of living things inspired many of the pieces I have done. I have always been interested in how things work, and like to play with the idea of things being broken down into representations of machinery. People today often get absorbed into technology and I wanted to show that by incorporating aspects of machinery into living things.
The work I have done in my concentration reflects back upon the exploration of the idea of mechanical versus organic and on steam punk fashion. Using the incorporation of gears as a key factor, I wanted to tie all of the pieces together, without being constrained to one specific topic. I believe that by using similar color schemes or repeating a symbol such as a gear throughout the pieces, it brings them all to represent one unified concept. The human body and all other living things can be looked at as machines, which images 6,7 and 9 are used to represent. Images 5 and 11 in particular deal with how the average person can become so absorbed with technology that they can fail to see the beauty of everyday life. The work in my concentration demonstrates the exploration of the idea of organic materials versus mechanical materials, while incorporating aspects of steam punk culture and fashion.
3 MODERATE CONCENTRATION 3.A The connection between the concentration topic and the work is evident but erratic. 3.B Decision making is sporadic, and the work demonstrates little sense of investigation or discovery. 3.C An idea for a concentration is presented, and some original ideas or attempts at innovation with materials and techniques seem to be emerging. 3D 3.D A potentially ti engaging theme is somewhat tdiscernible ibl but is inadequately considered. 3.E Some development is evident, but only a moderate understanding and superficial application of design principles are demonstrated.
3.F Though uneven, the work demonstrates emerging technical competence and some knowledgeable use of materials and media. 3.G Some transformation is discernible, but the scope of the work is narrow, repetitive, or both. 3.H If published or photographic sources or the work of other artists are appropriated, the work appears to be nearly direct reproductions; even if the work is skillfully rendered, the student s voice and the individual transformation of the images are minimal. 3.J There may be an emerging g level of accomplishment among the works for the concentration, and overall the work is of moderate quality.
3.A The connection between the concentration topic and the work is evident but erratic. 3.E Some development is evident, but only a moderate understanding and superficial application of design principles are demonstrated.
3.C An idea for a concentration is presented and some original ideas or attempts at innovation with materials and techniques is presented. 3.F Though uneven, the work demonstrates emerging technical competence and some knowledgeable use of materials and media.
My concentration revolves around flowers, because of their beauty and colors. My first concentration works were simply images of images of flowers. As my concentration developed, I explored different ways to present flowers, and did botanical illustrations which gave more meaning images (#4,#5). In my lt later works, the compositions become more fantasy.
Score of 4
4 GOOD CONCENTRATION 4.A The concentration topic and the work presented are closely related. 4.B Some clear decision making and discovery are evident in the investigation of the concentration. 4.C The concentration demonstrates some originality, and the work shows some innovative thinking. 4.D A clear theme that t engages the viewer with some of the work is discernible. 4.E The work is inconsistent in quality, but overall the understanding and application of design principles is good.
4F 4.F The work demonstrates t good technical competence and use of materials and media; technical aspects and articulation of ideas do not always work together. 4.G Apparent transformation is noticeable, but the scope of the work is limited or repetitive. 4.H With the apparent appropriation of published or photographic sources or the work of other artists, the student s voice is discernible; the images have been manipulated to express the student s s individual ideas. 4.J There may be uneven levels of accomplishment among the works for the concentration, but overall the work is of good quality.
4.D A clear theme that engages the viewer with some of the work is discernible. 4E 4.E Theworkisinconsistent inconsistent in quality, but overall the understanding and application of design principles is good.
4.B Some clear decision making and discovery are evident in the investigation of the concentration. 4.G Apparent transformation is noticeable, but the scope of the work is limited or repetitive.
The concentration I chose was comic art. Each piece is designed to tell its own unique story through a graphic novel likelike format. They are inspired by songs or books, both of which are important to me, and which I love. Each work shows a story inspired by either a song or book that I love and that inspires me. The first one is based on the song The Gambler by Fun, a generally pleasant love story that deserved a wide range of color and detail. That piece is very vibrant and happy. 2 is based on a Say Anything song, I Want to Know Your Plans, with a more negative, somewhat mournful mood. 3 5 are a sequence made to the song Not the Sun by Brand New, the polar opposite of number 1, mood wise and color wise. I wanted a sparse color palette and a resigned, slightly aggressive tone to the picture. I aimed dto express that t through body language, value, and composition. In the sequence, the two characters are intentionally moving further and further apart from one another. (cont d)
Both the 6th and 7th artwork are inspired by Markus Zusak's The Book Thief. The theme of books continues with 8 and 9, which are inspired by The Catcher in the Rye and The Hunger Games, respectively. 10 and 11 are also based on Brand New songs, g, Degausser and Luca, which I interpreted and transferred into visualizations. 12 is a scene from another novel, Divergent. I think what connects all of my pieces is their emotion and the stories they tell. With each work, I read and reread the scene or listened to the song that the piece was inspired from. I wanted to capture the exact gestures.

Miniature battles is the name of my concentration. I'v been thinking of taking pictures ofthese little toys that people will neglect whenwe we all reach a certain age. Having a little brother he always plays with these toys as if they are really talking and making battle cries. Miniature battle is as aboutthe the innocence ofa child's mind whenplaying with the toys, but at the same time making them look dangerous and menacing. With my pictures I started out with using a single soliders in black and white.then I started to put them together to make them diptych to have a story line and have different scenes.the last images are diptych as well, but withfaded andbright vibrant colors.the pictures that arein color are pictures I took outside. When editing the pictures in photoshop I would fade the colors, and for black and white pictures I would contrast and saturate the color. For principal p of design I used figure ground to make the soldiers look taller. Black and white to make it look more dangerous and menacing. Vibrant and faded color in the last four pictures to make it look joyful and fun just like a child's mind.
