Technologies in the core of the Program Antenna technologies covered by NEWFOCUS include generic focusing systems and their associated feeds and sensors: Dielectric or metal-dielectric lenses of arbitrary shape and size, made of various homogeneous or non-homogeneous materials Fresnel zone plates Reflector Reflector & horn antennas Flat lenses Horns Holographic antennas Reflectarrays Transmitarrays Beam waveguides SW excited Metallo ( dielectric) beamformers and discrete lenses (Shaped) constrained lenses Moderate / high gain Systems Lenses Arrays (guided or printed technologies) Leaky wave antennas Dielectric waveguides, wide band and multi band feeds, integrated feeds & receivers, etc. Purely dielectric lenses (lens antennas and substrate lenses) Feeds and detectors for passive or active devices that can be integrated at the system base and arranged into arrays, e.g. for the design of reconfigurable, beam forming or beam steering antennas and highresolution receiving / surveillance / diagnostic systems Multi layer FSS Metamaterial Homogeneous lenses (one or two shell, canonical or shaped) Nonhomogeneous lenses
NEWFOCUS Objectives Development of advanced analytical and numerical modelling techniques in electromagnetic theory using complementary formulations for the analysis, synthesis and optimization of integrated dielectric focusing systems Implementation of powerful computer-aided-design tools Benchmarking measurement facilities at mm and sub-mm wavelengths Promotion of research mobility
NEWFOCUS Forthcoming Events & Activities The first official presentation of NEWFOCUS at the COST ASSIST Workshop during ICECom-2010 Workshop in the frame of ICECom-2010 «New frontiers in mm / sub-mm wave antennas» Educational courses Post-graduate courses on integrated lens antennas and quasi-optical technologies and systems will be organized in the framework of the European School on Antennas. Publication of a reference book One edited reference book on integrated dielectric focusing systems at mm and sub-mm waves is going to be published. The book will represent a survey of the state-of-the-art within the field of the Program and will summarize the scientific results generated by NEWFOCUS. Proposals for contributions are welcome. Distribution of grants in support of research mobility and Scientific events
Call for applications: Research mobility (1/2) Short and Exchange visit travel grants A limited number of travel grants are available: Short visits of up to 15 days (120 days per year) Exchange visits from 15 days to 6 months (30 months per year) The grants will be competitively distributed on the basis of the scientific merit of the proposed project and its relevance to the Program. Who can apply? Applicants may be both pre-doctoral and post-doctoral. They must: 1. undertake work applicable to the Program; 2. apply to stay in a country other than the country of origin; 3. return to the institution of origin upon termination Priority will be given to contributing countries although non-contributing and non-esf countries are also eligible. Applications are to be submitted online and will be considered on a continuous submission basis (no deadline). Details of the call and submission rules are available at the NEWFOCUS website.
Call for applications: Research mobility (2/2) First three grants topics Resonances in the scattering and focusing of waves by periodically structured ensembles of metal and dielectric wires Design of quasi-3d integrated lens antennas New focusing devices based on periodic surfaces [under assessment]
Call for applications: Scientific meetings Support for scientific meetings The Steering Committee will consider proposals for conferences, workshops and schools on topics within the scope of the Program and with a European or international dimension. Applications will be assessed on their scientific quality and relevance to the Program. Priority will be given to meetings taking place in countries that financially support the Program, and the applicants should be established researchers based in a country in which the ESF has a member organization. Applications are to be submitted online and will be considered on a continuous submission basis (no deadline). Details of the call and submission rules are available at the NEWFOCUS website.
