3 Accelerators : Mission and Scope Implementation tools Promotion of nuclear applications for peaceful purposes and related capacity building is among the missions of the IAEA. Accelerator applications and nuclear instrumentation is one of the thematic areas, where the IAEA supports its Member States in strengthening their capabilities to adopt and benefit from the use of accelerators. In this context, a number of activities are being implemented by the Physics Section focusing on accelerator applications in multiple disciplines. Among these, activities facilitating access to accelerator facilities for countries without such capabilities are of key importance and of primary interest. 6 Synchrotron-Light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (Inaugurated in May 16, 2017 in Jordan) Over the last decade IAEA has provided extensive support to train staff at SESAME to safely commission and run the facility. This has included the training of 66 technical and scientific fellows in beamline technologies, and over 30 expert missions to SESAME to help build capacity in the installation and testing of equipment. IAEA also facilitated the networking of SESAME staff with experts from other synchrotron facilities in Europe, the United States and Japan.

7 BGD0010 TC Project Objective: To enhance the utilization of BAEC Tandem Accelerator Facility for research, development, and industrial services in various developmental areas, such as food and agriculture, health, industry and environment. Bangladesh The accelerator facility has been successfully installed, commissioned and is being used on various samples, but due to financial and other difficulties it has not been possible to train the scientific and technical manpower up to the necessary standard. Most of the manpower at the new tandem accelerator facility are freshly recruited or have been relocated from other facilities and are thus inexperienced. Our technical staff need training on vacuum techniques and the maintenance of vacuum equipment, maintenance of different complex parts of accelerator system and ion sources. It is also very important to train the technical staff for this new tandem accelerator system, its repair and maintenance and for its safe and reliable operation. Our scientific members need training on various ion beam analysis (IBA) techniques and their utilization in the diverse field of science such as agriculture, environmental, industrial, biological, mutation breeding, etc., to enables them to carry out new and innovative research activities more effectively. The senior scientific members need more exposure and visits to the advanced laboratories in the world to gain knowledge.

8 CRP F11021, Ms Aliz Simon Title: Enhancing Nuclear Analytical Techniques to Meet the Needs of Forensic Science Brazil, Croatia, Finland, France, Hungary, India, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Portugal, Singapore, Slovenia, Switzerland, Viet Nam Use of ion and neutron beam techniques has also been proven to be extremely powerful in provenancing samples relevant to forensics (other than conventional nuclear forensics dealing mainly with nuclear materials). In this context, possible areas of forensics applications include, but are not limited to, crime investigation, food safety and health-related issues, cultural heritage artefacts and environmental samples. Furthermore, promotion of the capabilities and establishing closer links among the end users, service providers and other stakeholders in this particular area still needs to be enhanced and better organized. Swainson Title: Advanced Moderators for Intense Cold Neutron Beams in Materials Research Argentina, Australia, Denmark, France, Hungary, India, Japan, Malaysia, Russian Federation, Sweden, United States of America To date, the major drawback in the application of cold neutrons is the very low efficiency in their production via different types of moderators. The need for higher cold neutron fluxes has led to various improvements in moderator shapes and designs. Still, however, a breakthrough in enhancing cold neutron fluxes is still pending and the solution to the problem requires new ideas regarding brand new moderator materials. A key element in the program is identifying and characterizing the scattering properties of candidate materials, and assessing the influence of processing parameters on those properties.

15 IAEA Collaborating Centres To promote the practical use of nuclear techniques worldwide and help the IAEA implement its own programmatic activities, the Agency collaborates with designated Member State institutions. Focusing on research, development and training, this Collaborating Centre scheme helps reach important targets of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Designation process

16 In conclusion IAEA assist scientists from Member States to: - Recommend new fields of research with increased potential for applications (Consultancy Meetings) - Exchange new ideas focusing on promising applications of societal impact and innovative solutions to problems of modern society (Technical Workshops) - Establish networks working in collaboration (Collaborative Research Projects) - Receive training on advanced technologies and nuclear-oriented research (Training Workshops and dedicated Schools) - Organize scientific events (Conferences, Workshops, Schools) in cooperation with IAEA - Build capacity through national, regional, interregional TC projects (Expert Missions, Training of personnel at hosting institutions abroad, organize training labs for young scientists/students) - Promote the unique expertise of their Research Infrastructures at a global scale (Collaborating Centres)
