3 Disciplines and functions Naval architecture Naval authority Hulls Structural Layout Owners and operators of naval vessels worldwide receive a robust, flexible and efficient service of independent technical assurance from BMT. Services include: Stability management (assurance by, e.g., assessment, inclining experiments, deadweight surveys); Escape and evacuation assessment; Surveys and design assurance (structural surveys) and the management of key safety areas; Material state assessment and performance assessment (comparing the results of those surveys with the required capability in that area). The Royal Navy's (RN's) surface fleet and submarine flotilla are regulated by Naval Authority Certification. To maintain the quality of this certification, BMT works in partnership with the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) in developing and updating their predefined procedures and standards. This involves: Stability, fire safety, escape and evacuation certification; Structures, atmosphere, manoeuvring, control and propulsion certification. As a Naval Authority Recognised Organisation, BMT can oversee and assist other organisations undertaking assessment work on RN naval platforms on behalf of the MoD. The innovative, twin island platform design of future British and French aircraft carriers was developed by BMT to confer advantages that include vulnerability reduction and improved aircraft sortie rates. Having provided design services to the MoD since 188, BMT understands the complex interactions between various elements of naval design. We advise programme managers prior to and during the development of a hull form. Our naval architects and structural engineers provide key inputs to the designs of the latest naval and auxiliary vessels, often generating the hull form by analysis and supporting it with hydrodynamics model testing. We set out the key requirements in order to achieve the correct balance of stability, speed, endurance, volume, ease of construction, manoeuvring and sea keeping. Hull form architecture capabilities include: Hull form development; Speed and endurance; Resistance and propulsion; Weight management; Seaworthiness; Intact and damaged stability; Seakeeping, stabilization and manoeuvrability. BMT provides a range of structural analysis services based on the expertise of our engineers and consultants and a range of design tools applied. In selecting design rules and standards we seek the most cost-effective balance between the mandatory stipulations of regulations, the demands to be placed on the vessels and the customer s needs and budgets. We design to naval design standards where necessary and to commercial classification rules laid down by, for example, Lloyd s, Det Norske Veritas and Germanischer Lloyd where appropriate. Our collaboration with Skipskonsulent A.S. on Aegir, a family of environmentally responsible, double hull fleet support ships is a pragmatic mix of auxiliary design experience and commercial rules. Our structural engineering capabilities include: Hull and superstructure design for warships and auxiliaries; Submarine platform design; Advanced numerical modelling tools; Scantling design according to direct calculation, class rules and design codes; Finite element analysis and other computer-based modelling; Shock evaluation; Fatigue prediction; Corrosion protection assessment; Noise and vibration evaluation; Materials selection; Drawings: project, fabrication and classification society. Our customers can call on our expertise and innovation throughout a platform s life cycle. We help them by performing concept studies, requirements management and systems trades. During later phases, our design teams challenge the requirements and propose solutions; choose relevant standards or classification rules; draw up specifications and prepare drawings for the organisations implementing the designs. BMT liaises with equipment manufacturers to ensure independent, practical, cost-effective solutions. Our layout and arrangement capabilities include: General layout; Preliminary design; Design for escape and evacuation; Submarine escape and rescue; Revised systems and supporting services; Stowage of munitions; Design optimized for operation; Accommodation, e.g. cabins, mess spaces and galleys; Safety arrangements; NBCD arrangements; Citadel arrangements; Machinery room layouts; Structural fire protection; Aviation and aviation support; Magazines; Stores; Hotel services; Classification and legislative plans, documents and books. BMT designed and project managed the introduction of the RN's first submarine-mounted dry deck hangar. Survivability/vulnerability BMT offers a range of survivability/ vulnerability assessment services, including whole ship survivability management, enabling authorities to examine survivability from a number of viewpoints and trade and optimize platform design characteristics and through life design changes accordingly. We have developed a software tool, PREVENT, a preliminary design tool that can be used to assess a ship s vulnerability to a variety of potential threats, these include damage from: Blast; Fragments; Underwater shock; Flooding. Our experience in concept development allows vulnerability reduction to be fully considered at the earliest stages of design thus reducing the need for expensive rework and possibly unacceptable compromises later in the design definition. Our survivability/vulnerability capabilities include: Whole ship survivability assessment; Vulnerability assessment in concept; Integration of recoverability capabilities; Susceptibility management; Interpretation of survivability analysis and studies. 4 5

4 Disciplines and functions Mechanical engineering Propulsion Our marine engineers conduct propulsion assessments on a wideranging, regular and frequent basis, often using PTOOL, a software application developed by BMT for propulsion systems analysis, and our comprehensive library of engine, motor and propulsor data. We also account for differing approaches to equipment operating policy; our library holds operating profiles for the majority of naval, auxiliary and specialist commercial vessels supporting our optimization of propulsion configurations. Other factors considered include environmental; potential exhaust and acoustic emissions and signatures; through life and unit purchase costs, and predicted fuel and lubricant consumption. Whole platform propulsion system architects; Optimization of the installation, selection of suppliers; Installation integration in hull, new builds or upgrades/conversions; Simulation of installation procedures; Selection of main engines, shaft line design, propeller selection; Full electric ship concept architecture; Steering, hydroplane and stabilizer design; Fuel cells; Air independent propulsion. BMT managed the conversion of the trials barge Longbow to support trials of the Type 45 destroyer s PAAMS(S) missile system. BMT Defence Services advised on structural additions and alterations to the platform. Electrical The introduction of power electronics into marine power systems has affected every aspect of marine engineering from generation through distribution and consumption. BMT is closely in touch with these trends as they develop and understands the impact they are having on the optimal design and topologies adopted for onboard power systems. We pay particular attention to the adoption of high voltage as well as low voltage systems and the extra demands that these place on safe design and ship construction; consequently we are often chosen to advise government agencies on the future for power system designs for surface warships and submarines. Auxiliary Auxiliary systems play a crucial role in the overall design of a vessel. Their scope covers everything from ventilation; air-conditioning and the provision of other hotel services to supplying the right grade of fuel to an onboard helicopter. BMT has experience of a range of systems including: High pressure air; Hydraulics; Bilge, fluid and fuel systems (both ship and aviation). BMT worked closely with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Support Integrated Project Team, the ship-repair yard and the equipment supplier to incorporate new diesel generators into RFA Argus. Combat systems The increasing inter-connectivity of combat systems in this era of netcentric warfare means a meticulous systems engineering approach is essential. The services we offer are underpinned by the detailed understanding of our engineers and ex-service combat system specialists, aided by our established links with equipment designers and manufacturers. Examples of our experience in this area include acting as a core team member in the Submarine Support Management Group (SSMG) helping MoD maintain and enhance the capabilities of the RN s in-service nuclear submarines. Combat systems and component equipment capabilities include: Component sensors; Networks, weapons and control systems; Communications; Requirement capture; Architecture design; Compartment layouts and manufacturing drawings; Interface specification and management; Installation guidance; Integration policy; Acceptance management. Systems Interfacing BMT has considerable experience in integrating systems for new build and in service platforms. These include the impact of equipment obsolescence and subsequent replacement on inter-connected sub-systems, and the introduction of equipment supporting new capabilities onto existing data highways and other support networks. Multidisciplinary teams develop whole platform designs such as BMT Venator, a reconfigurable warship concept. Examples include the unique method of cable identification we innovated (subsequently adopted by authorities as an industry standard) and our provision over many years of warship and submarine systems interface co-ordination services on behalf of the UK MoD for the Systems information Co-ordination Agency (SiCA). BMT has also provided the RN s in-service submarine flotilla with Combat System User Documentation (CSUD) since 16. Integration capabilities include: Interface management; Technical documentation; Information management; Integrated laser/digital platform surveying; 3D CAD integration/ isometric modelling; Working with original equipment manufacturers; Equipment fitting and instrument lists. 6 7 Every naval vessel will undergo some form of modification or enhancement during the course of her life. Exploiting our proficiency in systems, safety, regulatory assurance and environmental compliance, BMT offers a comprehensive capability in post-design services. This ranges from relatively minor modifications through to major structural changes, refits, role conversions and service life extension programmes. Design change management capabilities include: Design to cost; Basic design and construction specifications; Disposals management; Performance optimisation; Support documentation.

5 Cross-functional enablers Systems engineering Technical assurance Complex problems do not always require complicated solutions. Comprehending complexity allows the core essentials to be understood, leading to the development of simple and elegant solutions. The key to this simplicity and elegance is our Systems Engineering approach which benefits our customers in being balanced, holistic and, through our independence, free of manufacturing interests. Our insight and powerful analysis enables our customers to make those difficult decisions complex problems demand. Our systems engineers, technical experts and whole life costing specialists are fully integrated into project teams, bringing fresh thinking and demonstrable innovation to technically challenging programmes in the naval and land defence domains, civil marine and energy sectors. From the outset, we consider the needs of all involved in a project; including the technical and equipment aspects, personnel and their training needs, and the whole life logistical support required; we advise our customers on what current and foreseeable technologies can offer and help them to plan for the development of such technologies; and we ensure our customers have a clear means to identify the successful conclusion and acceptance into service of their project. The services we offer include: Requirements engineering and management; Systems analysis; Technology Assurance; Acquisition streamlining; Feasibility and concept studies; Cost capability trades off and whole life costing; Technology assessment and technology watches; Systems partitioning and architectural design; Integrated acceptance and test campaign planning and conduct. Electrical power systems BMT understands the impact that the introduction of power electronics has made to marine power systems. We pay particular attention to the adoption of high voltage as well as low voltage systems and the extra demands these place on safe design and ship construction; consequently we are often chosen to advise government agencies on the future for power system designs for surface warships and submarines. Auxiliary systems Auxiliary systems deliver crucial functionality in the overall design of a vessel. Their scope covers everything from ventilation; air-conditioning and the provision of other hotel services to supplying the right grade of fuel to an onboard helicopter. BMT s personnel have experience of a range of systems including high pressure air; hydraulics; bilge, fluid and fuel systems (both ship and aviation). Aviation systems BMT has been responsible for the platform design of the Royal Navy s future aircraft carrier; has supported Canadian Joint Support Ship design work and undertaken design change management for existing platforms such as RFA Argus, we understand flight deck operations and layout, and aviation fuel handling systems. Aviation systems capabilities include: Aviation integration; Aircraft fuelling/de-fuelling; Aircraft handling; Aircraft guidance systems; Aircraft starting; Flight deck arrangement; Hangar arrangement; Aircraft support and maintenance spaces; Aircraft tie-downs and systems for fuelling embarked aircraft with AVCAT (and de-fuelling and disposing of AVTUR from aircraft landed-on). Handling systems BMT brings knowledge and expertise to the challenges involved in the evolution of moving ordnance aboard ship via existing or newly designed weapons lifts. Our designers work with lift manufacturers to integrate systems and services into the vessel to provide the capacity for munitions transfer. Handling systems capabilities include: Ammunition handling; Mechanical handling; Lifts; Ramps; Transfer systems; Replenishment at sea. Technology watch BMT combine our understanding of technologies with our expertise in project management to maintain our own technology watch programme. This tracks advances in technologies identified as being of potential interest, and informs our road-mapping activities. Our project management experience is applied to mapping how quickly enabling technologies are likely to mature, seeking to predict their readiness for application in operational systems and platforms. BMT Defence Services delivers technical expertise, particularly in electrical and mechanical engineering and naval architecture fields, in providing independent technical assurance to customers in many areas of the world. For example, the Naval Ship Assurance Support Service (NSASS) is an alliance of BMT, the UK MoD and Lloyd s Register EMEA. It was conceived to develop, assist and improve the application of the framework for naval ship specifications, standards and assurance. Our extensive services include: Tender evaluation; Platform stability calculations; Reviewing technical content of concept, design and safety documentation. Delegated Naval Authority The Naval Authority Knowledge Management Office (NAKMO) is run on behalf of the MoD s Naval Authorities and the Ship Safety Management Office by BMT. The Naval Authority System (NAS) is a web application developed by BMT and is at the heart of the NAKMO, providing a one stop shop for the Naval Authority certification of RN vessels. This application is also used extensively throughout the MoD and by key industry stakeholders. BMT's Aegir-18R AOR replenishes the French Navy's future aircraft carrier (PA2). BMT employs the latest digital and laser data capture techniques to survey whole platforms or individual compartments quickly and definitively. 8

6 Cross-functional enablers Tools and methods Finite element methods BMT has an extensive track record of carrying out finite element model generation and analysis predominantly using the Finite Element Tool ANSYS. This experience extends from linear elastic models through to more complex modelling including, but not limited to: Non-linear analysis; Modal and harmonic analysis; Fatigue analysis; Shock assessment of equipment racks; Contact; Sub-modelling. Computational Fluid Dynamics Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is an increasingly important tool. We draw upon our own skills and experience and that of the wider BMT group to apply CFD in delivering whole warship design and other engineering services. We use both transient and steady-state simulation and flow visualisation to inform design decisions. We perform fluid dynamic analysis across a range of applications including: Assessing the hydrodynamic lubrication performance of our own rope guard design; Examining flows through a valve and visualising water flowing around the hull of a manoeuvring submarine. Nuclear submarine platform CFD. Our advanced Rope Guard design benefits warship operators by reducing lost fleet time spent clearing propeller shaft fouling and any associated costs of dry-docking. We provide a complete design, delivery and support package to our customer. Direct Calculation Direct calculation is performed where feasible, cost-effective and relevant to provision of solutions to customers questions. BMT s Quality Assurance system ensures suitable verification and validation of outputs is undertaken. Our design consultants and engineers employ a palette of software tools to support their bespoke analysis. These include: Constructing or adapting Microsoft Excel spreadsheets; Applying industry standard tools such as MathCAD and MATLAB. Rule based calculations MathCAD MathCAD may be used for the efficient creation of sets of calculations that can be described by a set of pre-defined rules, for instance, scantling rules prescribed by classification societies. BMT has implemented a wide range of applications as MathCAD tools, ranging from sizing fasteners to assessing mountings for equipment subject to shock. Ptool Ptool is a tool created by BMT, which has been used in support of the power and propulsion studies we have conducted on CVF, Queen Mary 2, LPD and ice-breaker platforms. Aided by equipment libraries and behaviour models describing individual propulsion architectures, Ptool supports us in the rapid assessment of propulsion systems options, enabling whole ship design to progress quickly. Mathematical modelling and simulation Mathematical modelling and simulation is useful for the study of behaviour of physical phenomena, where predictions of a range of outputs can be validated by actual physical data available for specific inputs. Modelling allows the sensitivity of inputs to be assessed and implementation strategies constructed for achieving the desired system behaviour. Recent examples of models BMT has generated include: Assessments of propulsor shaft vibration; Crash stopping of electrical propulsion systems; The spatial impact of a DC distribution system within a submarine platform. Knowledge capture and management BMT brings an integrated approach to whole ship and submarine design and support. We support our design projects with investment in research for identifying and assessing the applicability of emerging technologies. Our designers and engineers have developed knowledge management processes and software tools, for example, our rapid and accurate laser-digital imagery measurement techniques, in-house to speed the capture of the status quo ante and the development of design solutions; we have also captured areas of our design expertise in software codes to enhance the consistency and responsiveness with which our teams deliver results. A complete service for design and engineering success Whatever the challenge our dedicated, highly motivated and qualified people, including naval architects, marine engineers, systems, information and combat system engineers and our whole life costing experts apply the mix of technologies and knowledge best suited to meeting each customer s individual needs and budget.
