Brief Career Profile & Statement of Purpose: On graduation, I was lucky enough to be absorbed as a faculty member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at my alma mater. Though there were many openings for me in industries, my aptitude for and skills in experimental work as well as my poor exposure to manufacturing technology persuaded me to take up a teaching (profession) career. The idea was that it would help me in refreshing the courses I have studied earlier and would allow me better exposure to science and technology. This would, in return, update my knowledge, strengthening my chances for admission to graduate studies in machine tool technology. During the initial phases of my teaching career, most of my leisure hours were spent at a number of nearby industries (Rourkela, a big steel city in India) to expose myself to the domain of manufacturing. Only then I realised the existence of numerous problems with the adopted processes to tailor the components of valued quality and reliability. I wished to unravel some of the mysteries in the manufacturing processes. This infused determination in me to pursue research and development while teaching. Within a few years, I was oriented to peruse work in the area of non-traditional manufacturing to get rid of the chronic problems associated with conventional manufacturing processes due to stringent conditions of material properties. Such nonconventional processes may be very suitable for manufacturing components catering to the needs of automobile, aerospace or electronic industries. (But) The personal interest in electrical and electronics engineering also influenced my choice of the subject. Due to the non-availability of unconventional machines in surrounding industries and the unaffordable cost of imported ones by any educational institution (during that period) in the country, my interest was directed towards the design and development of the small prototype machines of each kind, practically single handed, with the assistance of my graduate students. Further, experimenting with the same and hunting for the optimality along with my research team gave me the opportunity to understand the basic science involved behind each of the processes. Gradually, my efforts were acknowledged and industries showed their interests in innovations! It became a craze for me then to develop newer systems (though it might exit elsewhere) to demonstrate to the industries their superiority. It went on slowly but steadily. However the problem in raising their level of sophistications as compared to the performance of imported machines became the bottleneck because of the cost factor. One can well understand this in perspective of Indian Institutions and Industries! By now, most of the imported machine is available within affordable price for industries and educational institutions. The result is also the development of laboratories for regular Under-graduate and Graduate laboratory experiments and research, attached to the course subjects are the most popular courses offered for last two decades, Modern Methods of Manufacture for under-graduates and Advanced Manufacturing Processes for Graduates ; recently they have been merged together. They have been introduced and taught by me. A few other courses also have been recently introduced with the assistance of few of the 6

7 young colleagues of my team. These courses namely, Precision & Micro Manufacturing, Mechatronics and Laser Processing of Materials were highly appreciated by the students. For the last decade, my prime interest is in developing flexible machines (retrofitting) especially for micro components, irrespective of their material properties. That is what motivated me to initiate work in the area of Wire-cut EDM and Laser processing, where one could possibly tailor the surface of materials for various requirements (heat treating, alloying, welding, cutting etc.) in one go a fairly new concept! Though my present intension is to investigate Micro flexible machine, which can tailor any material and where hybridisation is achieved through Laser or Grinding, Electrodischarge (EDM), Ultrasonic (USM) and Electrochemical (ECM) principles together for machining of Silicon, any other topics of similar nature might interest me as well. On desire of my services by the College of Engineering, Pune (An Autonomous Institution of Govt. of Maharastra), the 2 nd oldest Technical Institution of the country, availed superannuation voluntarily at the completion of 62 of years from Indian Institute of Kharagpur, in July Joined the CoEP as Emeritus Professor in Mechanical Engineering from August 2007 and established the Microsystems Engineering Laboratory [Ref: Times of India, Pune edition, dated October 21 st 2008, pp. 3.]. I wish to spread the experience (High Technology) all over the country where ever possible that are essential technologies in the manufacturing of components required for Automotive, Aerospace and Electronic industries, and biomedical applications. Besides the above, now the main interest is to develop an RPT Lab, (Futuristic Manufacturing) a comprehensive approach, would cater to the needs of labeducation in Mechatronics, Innovative-design & validation (CAD/CAM), Microsystems Engineering for advancing technology with the state-of-the-art in manufacturing technology (with bought out systems or in-house developed).
