Chimatiro ekaunda@yahoo.com and sloansc@nepad. org Needs assessment of aquaculture in Sierra Leone (The assessment of the needs to develop, commercialize and grow an aquaculture sector in Sierra Leone was undertaken by way of a diagnostic stocktaking. Thirteen topical issues that may either impact or have a bearing on the development of the sector were identified, reviewed and appraised by a panel of experts. Key diagnostics were extracted from the assessments and these were used to identify the investment needs to build the sector. Cost benefit ratios showed that investment in aquaculture would be profitable. Dec 2012 to January 2013 NEPAD/PAF same as above Aquaculture in Sierra Leone: A strategic roadmap for development and investment opportunities ( Based on the outputs of the needs assessment we were requested to develop a strategy for the development of a commercial aquaculture sub-sector in Sierra Leone. The strategy has been presented to the GoSL and NEPAD plans to support its implementation during July July 2012 PureOcean (Pty) Ltd. The data provided the means to undertake a diagnostic analysis to assess the potential of mariculture and the need (and or not) of a mariculture sector (master) plan that would serve to develop a new iondustrial sector in an orderly and environmentally responsible manner). (We undertook a regional trip to gather information pertaining to the current status of the regional fisheries and the potential for aquaculture development. A diagnostic analysis was undertaken to assess the potential for private sector investment in the region, and an investment strategy was prepared. In terms of aquaculture opportunities, the major investment opportunities were in mariculture and tilapia / catfish culture. The development of an aquaculture development node in Mwanza was proposed to assist the private sector Nile perch processors to diversify production into aquaculture, and reduce their dependency on the declining perch fishery in Lake Victoria Maurtius, Madagascar, Kenya, Tanzania, Comoros, ReCoMaP, IOC.
