4 H2020 Earth Observation R&D Proposal submitted Aratos was recently involved to a consortium that led to a proposal submission for the H2020-EO Call Earth Observation: Downstream applications. The title of the proposal is TOURA - Tourism applications of earth observation. It aims to the development of several applications in the fields of tourism flux monitoring, bathing waters quality and safety, and coastline features morphology and dynamics monitoring along with the development and testing of ICT services that will make these products available for visitors, tourists agents and coastal management authorities. TOURA proposes to use high optical resolution images and radar data from Sentinels instruments with complementary local data from UAVs, fixed videocameras and in-situ buoys and sampling, to provide integrated information needed to respond to end-users demands. The integration of this information will be made within a web and desktop platform for beach managers and mobile application services for tourists. Successful Closure of ARGOS Project ARGOS - Advanced protection of critical buildings by Overall anticipating Systems is a multimodal early warning security solution for Critical Infrastructures focused on privacy respectful low consumption technologies and detection algorithms based on data fusion and data mining smart techniques. The ARGOS project was successfully concluded with its Final Review Meeting with the assigned EC Officers in Brussels at early February After the positive remarks from EC, the ARGOS partners concluded to find ways to continue their good and efficient collaboration towards next opportunities. 5 Innovation: Smart Farming The smart farming revolution is sowing the seeds for the future success of the agriculture industry M2M technology has enabled a wide array of products to become both smart and connected, which have in turn become connected product systems. Now, thanks to IoT solutions, they are evolving into cloud-connected information systems, also known as IoT System of Systems. A product let s say a tractor is now not only smart but also connected to various pieces of smart farm equipment around it, such as trailers and combine harvesters. Through IoT, that farm equipment system can also connect to other connected product systems on the farm, such as irrigation, weather data and seed optimization systems to make one vast farm management system. Modern farming technology can track a flock s movements and record data about the animals, but individual sheep wearing wireless devices can also create a mesh network to give them connectivity across areas where there s no mobile or Wi-Fi signal. It s all part of the exploding smart farming sector, which uses machine-to-machine (M2M) technology to track livestock, manage fields in minute detail, keep tabs on farm machinery and buildings, and even deploy robot swarms to tend fields. The connected countryside is providing farmers with masses of data to help them wring every last drop of productivity out of their land and machinery. A farmer s digital toolbox of sensors, software and analytics creates a rich visual overview of the property. From that overview the farmer can zoom down to individual fields and portions of fields to get a granular view. This is possible thanks to sensors that report data on metrics such as nutrients, moisture and the weather in a straightforward visual representation so that the farmer can then be precise about which parts of the field need more water and fertilizer. The data from the soil can be used by the farmer to map the density of seedlings, optimizing his sowing via the very rich data collected. The farmer can then use telematics on farm vehicles to track the progress of the person actually driving the farm vehicles and also keep an eye on fuel consumption and how much fertilizer is being used. The software can also suggest tasks to be prioritized based on weather forecasts and allocate resources depending on the profitability of the field.
