Futures movement - Global social megatrends - globalization, economic, behavior, policy Collective identity - We Are Sustainability Collective Action - Indvidual/households (micro) to societies (macro) Futures consciousness - Individual to collective (national, international)

Toward a Futures Movement: Research collaboration on climate change as an opportunity to build a futures consciousness for global sustainability in Creating Sustainable Systems? Futures Consciousness - "Future consciousness is part of our general awareness of time, our temporal consciousness of past, present, and future. Future consciousness includes the normal human capacities to anticipate, predict, and image the future, to have hopes and dreams about the future, and to set future goals and plans for the future. Future consciousness includes thinking about the future, evaluating different possibilities and choices, and having feelings, motives, and attitudes about tomorrow. Future consciousness includes the total set of ideas, visions, theories, and beliefs humans have about the future - the mental content of future consciousness. I define "future consciousness" as the total integrative set of psychological abilities, processes, and experiences humans use in understanding and dealing with the future. (Lombardo, 2008, p. 5)

Global Sustainability?????? Sustainability???

Global Sustainability?????? What? Why? How What?? When Why (How? fast)?(climate/environmental change as an unignorable driver) How? Understanding When (How what fast) it is,? is the pathway to achieving it. Who Understanding???.perhaps the what most it is, important is the pathway question. to achieving it. What, Who???.perhaps why, how, and who most are connected. importantly. That is, we discover what sustainability by exploring who we are.

Sustainability??? Sustainability is not a fixed ideal, but an evolutionary process of attempting to improve the management of systems, through improved understanding and knowledge. The process is not deterministic: the end-point is not known in advance. The starting point of the process is not some degree of sustainability because this cannot be known or observed. It is considered that unsustainability which can be seen is necessarily the starting point for this process. What is known to be unsustainable will change and evolve with new information and experience, which makes the process dynamic rather than static. (Wilkinson and Cary (2002, p.381))

Sustainability??? AKA: A Safe Operating Space for Humanity (Rockström, et al. 2009).

Wicked Problems Defined by high complexity, uncertainty, and contested social values. Traditional modes of inquiry are unable to produce knowledge that is robust enough to withstand contested values and high complexity. Wicked problems are often characterized by multiple conflicting and equally valid scientific and social interpretations. (Miller, 2012: Rittel & Webber, (1973) Public Policy Planing)

Climate Change is a Super Wicked Problem Super wicked problems comprise four key features: 1) Time is running out 2) Those who cause the problem also seek to provide a solution 3) The central authority needed to address them is weak or non-existent 4) Irrational discounting occurs that pushes responses into the future Together these features create a tragedy because our governance institutions, and the policies they generate (or fail to generate), largely respond to short term time horizons even when the catastrophic implications of doing so are far greater than any real or perceived benefits of inaction. (Levin, Cashore, Bernstein, & Auld, 2012).

We began our inquiry by seeking out... [those] who were outstanding in their participation in community affairs. Such persons were not difficult to find. Among residents of the community, as among our own observers, there was clear consensus about a score of individuals who were judged to be the guiding lights of community endeavor. Moreover, these persons did appear to differ in their social outlook from the ordinary citizen and especially from the nonparticipant in community affairs. (Bronfenbrenner, 1960, p. 54)
