1 STARC Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center Second call for papers International Congress on Archaeological Sciences in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Near East (ICASEMNE) 29 April 1 May 2010 Paphos, Cyprus Deadline for abstracts: 15 November 2009 Deadline for registration and payment: 15 December (available soon) The Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center (STARC; of the Cyprus Institute ( is pleased to announce an open call for papers for the International Congress on Archaeological Sciences in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Near East (ICASEMNE). This international congress aims to highlight recent advances in natural and material science applications to archaeology and cultural heritage in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Near East, and to provide an international academic forum, hitherto not available, for dissemination of results of current research in these fields in the region. The congress is addressed to the international scientific community of archaeologists, archaeological scientists, and researchers applying natural and material sciences to archaeology and cultural heritage in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Near East. Congress topics: Papers (podium or poster presentations) on all aspects of research on natural and material science applications to archaeology and cultural heritage in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Near East are welcome. Problem oriented, comparative studies, as well as papers addressing advances, problems and potential on regional and local scales are also called for. The geographical scope of the workshop is inclusive, encompassing the Eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East, and Southwest Asia. The chronological scope ranges from the earliest prehistory to medieval and historical periods. Conference dates: 29 April - 1 May 2010

Please note that papers presenting the results of studies which apply natural and material sciences to any man-made or biological archaeological remains (e.g., metals, ceramics, glass, bone, organic materials, etc), in order to address archaeological questions, are welcome. Sessions In addition to an open call for papers, the organisers are pleased to announce an open call for thematic sessions (please see session abstract submission form). The following thematic sessions have already been proposed, and the congress organisers look forward to receiving further session proposals in other fields: Archaeometallurgy in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Near East (Chair: Dr V. Kassianidou, University of Cyprus, Cyprus). Further information available from: Abstract submission at: The production, use and trade of metals have been key factors in the socio-economic and cultural development of ancient cultures the Eastern Mediterranean basin and the Near East and the reason behind the creation of complex trading networks which brought these cultures together. This is why during the ICASEMNE there will be a thematic session devoted to Archaeometallurgy. Scholars are invited to present papers on the application of material sciences and the development of analytical methodologies for the study of all aspects of ancient metallurgy and metal artefacts, including issues related to the production, use, trade and provenance of all metals during all periods. Also welcome are papers focusing on the technological knowledge and its spread, as well as metals and metalworking s socio-economic and geopolitical significance etc. Current Directions in Human Bioarchaeology in the Near East and Eastern Mediterranean (Chair: Dr K.O. Abstract submission at: archsci2010paphos@cyi.ac.cy This session focuses on current and interdisciplinary research on archaeological human remains in the Near East and Eastern Mediterranean, such as the application of scientific and technological methods to the study of human remains in the region. Contributions on other topics are also welcomed. The session is addressed to the international community of researchers working within the fields of physical anthropology, human bioarchaeology, palaeopathology, mortuary archaeology, and the relevant fields of science and technology. The period and area coverage includes human remains dating from earliest prehistory to medieval/historical periods in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Near East.

Further information available from: Abstract submission at: In all the regions along the coast of the Eastern Mediterranean, pottery production and distribution has been a major activity since its first appearance. This was intensified during the Bronze Age when circulation of goods in ceramic containers became a regular practise which continued up to nowadays. Study of archaeological pottery in terms of provenance, technology and function, of pottery coming from the area has a long tradition and the session will be a forum to present an account of such work currently carried out internationally. Abstract submission at: archsci2010paphos@cyi.ac.cy Food and its history have multiple aspects. Exploitation of food resources and strategies for the acquisition of food, either animal or vegetable, the beginnings of animal husbandry and agriculture and the choice of production, the management of animals or the cultivation practices, the food preferences (e.g., species, age of animals, types of meat), the process of food preparation etc., are linked to technical developments and innovations as well as to cultural changes. The aim of this session is to gather specialists who work on food from all periods with different disciplinary approaches (i.e., ceramology, archaeozoology, archaeobotany, anthropology, etc.) to address this common theme. All aspects of the "chaîne opératoire" can be addressed, from the choice and acquisition of food animal and vegetable to the impact of food on the health of human populations, through the ceramics used for cooking. The purpose of this conceptually and temporally broad session is to confront prospects and pool information about practical and technical aspects of human consumption since the beginning of sedentarity. These multidisciplinary approaches are still rare in the eastern Mediterranean, especially for the historical periods. While introducing new data and advanced methods (e.g., morphometrics, genetics and palaeogenetics, isotopic analyses, chemical analyses of residues) some of which are common to several disciplines the purpose is to generate exchanges between the various fields with the intention of better integrating data from usually very specialized approaches into the common reflection on food.
