all types of institutions is creating new pressures that come with a rapidly diversifying faculty workforce and a need for different kinds of worker support. ADMINISTRATION S CONCERNS Attracting & retaining faculty The Changing Reality of Faculty Work Faculty impact the core of both two-year and four-year institutions. They help mold campus culture and university identity, influence the degree to which students engage and thrive, participate in institutional governance and define the quality of the university s instruction. At four-year institutions, faculty are typically responsible for securing funding and conducting high-quality research as well. The work they do provides essential services to colleges and universities. But today, they re feeling the effects of a changing education environment. The faculty role can be a demanding one. They often work long hours, which can make work/ life balance a challenge. On top of their teaching loads, they have administrative and advising responsibilities. At research institutions, faculty must balance research time with teaching and administrative duties, and they must also innovate creatively and collaboratively with other faculty members and departments more than they have before. Also, the increase of adjunct faculty across At the same time, institution administrators have key concerns and priorities. They must support collaborative modes of working and attract and keep high-achieving faculty and students all while increasing faculty/student engagement, managing fluctuating departments and making the most of aging facilities. Meanwhile, the work of faculty is being affected by the same developments that are changing work in general. The world is evolving, and the technology, processes and products of work are changing. Faced with these changes, workplaces are rethinking how work happens and what the office looks like. This drive for innovation in increasingly complex conditions is causing a macro shift toward more creative and interdisciplinary work. Creativity and collaboration are emerging as critically important skills for graduates and 21st-century workers. The world of education is also evolving. Parents and students have increasing expectations for their investments. Students are more diverse in age, and there are more first-generation college students than ever before. Technology changes are creating new models and pedagogies. New online learning and blended learning models are changing how teaching happens in the classroom. Faculty work is evolving; it involves different activities, pedagogies and tools than it has in the past. Yet one aspect of education the faculty office remains relatively unchanged. Faculty spaces are an important part of faculty identity, and they must be updated to support their changing work. As highly specialized workplaces, it s clear that they need and deserve attention. Because faculty success matters. When faculty succeed, the whole institution succeeds. Collaborative culture Interdisciplinary research Faculty & student engagement Expanding & contracting departments Optimizing real estate FACULTY S REALITY Time demands & work/life balance Teaching loads Wide diversity of student needs Research priorities Service & administrative tasks Diversity of faculty roles 2 STEELCASE EDUCATION FACULTY SPACES IDEABOOK UNDERSTANDING FACULTY SPACES 3
Key Insights In order to better understand how to support faculty work through design, Steelcase performed a wide-ranging study of people and spaces at institutions across the country. Through a combination of campus visits, faculty interviews, student workshops, digital diary probes and time-lapse photography, several key insights were uncovered. A Range of Thinking Modes Faculty engage in a range of thinking modes to be productive and creative. Different Activities & Work Styles They have different work activities and work styles that vary by individual and department. Identity & Personality Their office is a place where they express their identity and personality. Knowledge Creating & Sharing Space can help facilitate the creating and sharing of knowledge. Student Interactions Student interactions are essential, and they must be comfortable. 4 STEELCASE EDUCATION FACULTY SPACES IDEABOOK UNDERSTANDING FACULTY SPACES 5
Design Principles Based on extensive prototyping of spaces, we identified several core design principles that support faculty behaviors and needs. These principles recognize that spaces can best support faculty work when they are designed as a holistic, integrated system. Ways of Thinking & Working Be mindful of transitions between varying modes of work. Support multiple cognitive modes. Nurture wellbeing and rejuvenation. Anticipate storage needs. Integrate physical and digital tools. Personal Expression & Connection Balance accessibility and privacy. Provide users choice and control. Embrace diversity of culture and user groups. Knowledge Creating & Sharing Support the range of collaboration modes. Support multiple modes of interaction. Spatial Attributes These spatial attributes help you deliver and execute the design principles to build successful faculty work environments. Create faculty spaces with activity zones for the different cognitive modes they must engage in: concentration, creativity, collaboration and rejuvenation. Enable privacy and control in a variety of spaces to provide safe havens where faculty can retreat from being onstage and incubate new ideas. Plan for and create private, owned office spaces within the faculty spaces ecosystem that incorporate authentic and inspiring design elements, accessories and materiality. Offer personalization and customization through a kit of parts that faculty can configure within their space. Facilitate the creation of collective intelligence within the institution by providing a variety of diverse spaces for the transfer of knowledge. Include spaces throughout the faculty space ecosystem that support the three types of collaboration: iterative, generative and evaluative. Integrate storage, physical tools and digital technologies throughout spaces to support personal work styles, collaboration and the creative process. Provide comfortable meeting places for student interactions and collaboration by creating unloaded corridors, offices with front porches and personalized private offices. Arrange faculty groups, research labs, graduate assistants and departments within the floorplan so as to encourage frequent interactions and casual meetings. 6 STEELCASE EDUCATION FACULTY SPACES IDEABOOK DESIGNING FACULTY SPACES 7
3 Ways to Think About Faculty Spaces Double-Loaded Corridor Unloaded Corridor Following trends in facilities planning and interior design, we ve classified faculty spaces within three different typologies: Double-Loaded Corridor, Unloaded Corridor and Faculty Hub. These serve as helpful starting points when beginning to think about. Faculty Hub 8 STEELCASE EDUCATION FACULTY SPACES IDEABOOK DESIGNING FACULTY SPACES 9

Shared Space In exchange for 3 private spaces, this centrally located open area is a social hub for faculty and support staff at an intersection of hallways. It has a combination of settings that encourage faculty to connect with one another. An adjacent enclave provides a space for visual and acoustic privacy when needed.
