12 Discussion Human-in-the-loop Fabrication: Do we need humans in the fabrication process beyond design and modeling? A future where interactive devices can be printed rather than assembled created as a single object. 12

13 Discussion Say it ain t so?: Is fabrication HCI?...I think 3d printing, even if it's not printing sensors, can be broadly thought of as HCI in the sense that it gives digital objects physicality. (Diana)...does it really matter if it is or isn't HCI? I suppose there are some benefits to clarifying where it is, perhaps including situating it in a department with students doing related things and fitting it in at conferences where audiences have related interests, but I think it's probably better for the domain if we don't try to force an HCI label onto it. (Seering) I think fabrication itself is not HCI. However 3D printing as a fabrication technique can enable a lot of new interactions, such as the vision presented at the beginning of this paper... (Li) 13

14 Discussion Such Fabrication; so interaction: I think the biggest impact of this paper is to introduce a novel method of fabrication that produces new interaction devices, which have the potentials of impacting our lives in the future. (Zhao) I really appreciate the effort of this paper in its exploration in the sensing space, which opens up a brand new perspective of implementing miniaturized sensors without using MEMS. (Chen) 14

15 Discussion If you print it, they will come: This paper s introduction helped me understand some of the genuine benefits of 3D printing over traditional manufacturing approaches (specifically, the authors cite reduced cost, accelerated speed of prototyping, increased accessibility, and product customizability as key advantages of 3D printing), which helped convince me of the potential value in investing millions of dollars in research funds towards this venture. (Ng) I also believe that research centered on fabrication and 3D printer will have a larger impact once 3D printers become available to a wider group of people. (Zheng) I m with Toby on this--print all the things! I don t see a particular downside to limiting ourselves in this case, when there s the potential to promote new interaction devices. (Liu) 15
