2 LIVING IN A SENSORY WORLD Everyday, and in so many ways, we circulate in a world of sensors. We do so mainly without knowing it. MEMS, sensors and the Internet of Things (IoT) are terms largely unfamiliar to us. Yet the technology behind these market sectors exists in a multi-billion-dollar landscape of everyday applications and uses, such as smartphones, tablets, cars and gaming. And that s just the start of it.
3 FROM BILLIONS TO TRILLIONS The burgeoning Internet of Things (IoT market), which will make the everyday, inanimate objects we use smart through internet connectivity, has a good chance to become the way of the future and is forecast to be valued in trillions of dollars. When it comes to Panorama Synergy s potential and the future of MEMS sensors, we know it makes sense to be smart.
4 WHAT ARE MEMS? As humans, our five senses enable us to function in everyday life. Micro-electromechanical Systems (MEMS) take senses to a new level for their ability to detect minute changes far beyond the capability of people. These MEMS live on microchips and comprise miniature mechanical devices. From our smartphones to the thermostat on our heater and the engine control of our car, the technology we use is made possible thanks to MEMS.
5 WHAT IS SPECTROSCOPY? When light hits a material, some parts of it are absorbed, while others are transmitted or reflected. This leads to every material having a characteristic - optical fingerprint. You can see this as the colour of a material. Spectroscopy goes even further, because it not only detects visible light, but can also work with lightwaves which are invisible to the human eye for example, UV or infrared and it enables remote sensing where the sensor does not have to come into direct contact with the sample.

11 CUSTOMER BENEFITS AGRICULTURE SECTOR EXAMPLE TIME The ability to accurately test crop samples in the field removes the need for samples to be sent for analysis in distant laboratories delivering a significant time advantage. NON-DESTRUCTIVE In field-testing with Panorama P3 is non-destructive. The same leaf can be tested day after day and to measure pulp yield, for example, it is not necessary to fell a tree to take a sample. LOW COST Panorama P3 has demonstrated that micro-scale MEMs spectrometry sensors can be mounted into portable devices or fixed structures for use in field. This provides considerable commercial advantages over costly laboratory-bound sample examination processes and expensive lab-based equipment. EASE OF USE The end user can tune the Panorama P3 to be able detect wavelengths of interest for example protein, or water-borne contaminants - so it can be used for a wide variety of applications. It is lightweight, robust and delivers findings fast.
12 GLOBAL COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE While a single sensor can scan a wide range of NIR frequencies, the micro-scale of Panorama Synergy s sensor enables multiple sensors to be mounted into a single device depending on the type and complexity of the analysis a customer requires. Panorama s sensors can also be fabricated to scan in the medium wave (MWIR) and long wave (LWIR) Infrared spectra which provides wide ranging applicability and value to the mining, industrial processing, chemicals and space industries. 13 SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE Panorama Synergy s spectrometer sensor can be tuned up and down within its wide range of frequencies to detect many different compounds with consistently high accuracy rates. In recent tests the Panorama P3 readings have been comparable to an expensive, high performance laboratory spectrometer.
14 Mobile and tough: our technology could save the lives of military personnel in the field, through the rapid and better detection of hazardous agents. APPLICATION POTENTIAL Panorama P3 has demonstrated proof-of-concept in agriculture. Scientists, farmers and agronomists can analyse the NIR spectrum of a sample to determine the presence and concentration of both wanted and unwanted elements, such as protein levels or unwanted levels of pesticides. Broader application potential has been identified for food safety and contamination detection, healthcare and defence. The stretched medical profession and patients could benefit from the early detection capability of our technologies, which offer a broad range of medical applications. Application in defence evidenced in late 2017 when Panorama Synergy, in partnership with University of Western Australia (UWA) and Scientific Aerospace (Sci.aero), was awarded a Defence Grand Challenge Grant to develop an unmanned bomb-detecting drone.
