EXPERIMENT TRACKER (ExTra) USED TO COORDINATE MEDICAL SUPPORT OF ESA ASTRONAUTS Beate Fischer Chicago May 2013
Disclosure Information 84th Annual AsMA Scientific Meeting Beate Fischer I have the following financial relationships to disclose: Employee of: DLR (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt) I will not discuss off-label use and/or investigational use in my presentation
Presentation outline Introduction What is ExTra? What is the purpose of ExTra? Which information can be found in ExTra? Examples how ExTra supports ESA MedOps work Future plans ESA Presentation Beate Fischer Chicago May 2013 HSO-UM Slide 3
Introduction ESA Medical Operations (MedOps) follows astronauts in one of their main tasks: Experiment Program execution.???? Experiment information and requirements are spread over many documents and sources. ESA/B. Fischer The Experiment Tracker ExTra gathers all information in one place makes it easily accessible provides consistent information ESA Presentation Beate Fischer Chicago May 2013 HSO-UM Slide 4
What is ExTra? ExTra is a web-based database system, developed by ESA Biomedical Engineers (ESA BMEs) Contains data relevant for ESA MedOps about the following experiments: experiments performed by ESA crew experiments reviewed by ESA Medical Board other experiments performed in Columbus module ESA Presentation Beate Fischer Chicago May 2013 HSO-UM Slide 5
What is the purpose of ExTra? One location to find information required to support experiment execution pre-, in-, and post-flight for: ESA flight surgeon: insight into details of the scientific program ESA BME on console: preparation for a crew day; support to real-time operations ESA Medical Board: archives experiment related documentation ESA/B. Fischer ESA Presentation Beate Fischer Chicago May 2013 HSO-UM Slide 6
Which information can be found in ExTra? Information collected in ExTra is structured per experiment Experiment Overview on Science and Operations Safety relevant information Medical Board Review data and review comments Comments from Astronaut Training On Orbit operational requirements, and experience from console work ESA Presentation Beate Fischer Chicago May 2013 HSO-UM Slide 7 Experiment documentation in Directory
Examples how ExTra supports ESA MedOps work 1. ESA-BME pre-flight timeline review Checks payload requirements versus requirements approved by Medical Boards ExTra -> easy access to documentation 2. Experiments using electrodes/sensors Conflicts with other experiments or PAO (Public Affairs Office) events? ExTra -> operational information operational lessons learned NASA, ISS020E ESA Presentation Beate Fischer Chicago May 2013 HSO-UM Slide 8 ESA
Examples how ExTra supports ESA MedOps work ctd. 3. Conflicting requirements e.g. CARD science requirements <->daily exercise schedule ExTra -> structured list of experimental requirements Eases in-flight coordination of crew timelining between MedOps and other ground controllers NASA, iss030e Crewtime violations e.g. SOLO experiment crewtime violations ExTra -> experiment related notes from console helped in further discussions on crewtime NASA, iss030e ESA Presentation Beate Fischer Chicago May 2013 HSO-UM Slide 9
Future Plans ExTra shall be opened to other entities starting with ESA Mission Science and Utilization Planning Office (MSO) later-on other operations teams (Eurocom?) Upgrade to ExTra 2.0: Most inputs per automatic procedures User interface with higher flexibility Better formatting options Enhanced networking/linking ESA/J. Lindner ESA Presentation Beate Fischer Chicago May 2013 HSO-UM Slide 10
