4 Patients 5 patients Age range Presenting with psychotic symptoms Four diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, one with unspecified non-organic psychosis Three of the five were on antipsychotic medication at the time of referral
5 WAYS OF PRACTICING MINDFULNESS CONTROL SUPPORT VS ISOLATION Focus on the breath Getting it right Adapting the approach Mindfulness as a way of living Overwhelmed by emotion/out of control Regaining control Mindfulness works immediately Social Isolation Sense of failure Support from the team Turning to the team in extremis Personal qualities of the therapist
6 WAYS OF DOING MINDFULNESS Getting it right I was keeping tabs, you are almost, you are watching yourself and thinking, am I doing it right? (pt2)
7 WAYS OF DOING MINDFULNESS Mindfulness as a way of living A bath could be a pleasure rather than just rushing, it could be a pleasure relaxing - therapeutic. Washing the dishes, it makes you think. It has to be done anyway, washing the dishes. (pt3)
8 WAYS OF DOING MINDFULNESS Focus on the breath Being aware of the breath. That is helping me. Definitely helping me. Calming me down. (p1) And then you breathe and, you walk. (pt5)
9 WAYS OF DOING MINDFULNESS Adapting the practice I don t know if Maria would find it helpful but when I was really in a panic state, I found as opposed to in and out for 4, I found in for 4 and out for 6. (pt4)

11 CONTROL Overwhelmed /out of control Just thinking about it does me, I m going to blow in a minute. Needs to be worked at. (pt1) The constant fight or flight mode and the adrenalin and the panic. (pt4)
12 CONTROL Overwhelmed /out of control It was almost like you felt you re, that you had lost control of your mind. So everything was just out of control(pt2)
13 CONTROL Regaining control With the mindfulness it just managed, it allowed me to be in control, the amount of agitation that I felt (pt4) Don t let the bad ones grow (pt5)
14 CONTROL Mindfulness works immediately At first there was nothing, I just felt helpless. I just felt. I didn t feel like the medication was going to work. It didn t feel like anything was going to work but then with the mindfulness - did help me (pt4)

16 SUPPORT VS ISOLATION: Social Isolation Because before I used to just shut myself off. Just going out to do my shopping. Closing myself up in the flat. Not answering the phone. (pt3)
17 SUPPORT VS ISOLATION Sense of failure I think I would be too slow in doing the job (pt3)
18 SUPPORT VS ISOLATION Turning to the team in extremis I was absolutely exhausted. I couldn t take no more. It was exhausting me. (pt1) It felt, quite, I think, desperate would probably be the word. (pt2)
19 SUPPORT VS ISOLATION Personal qualities of the therapist She radiates good. I feel safe with her. I am at ease with her. I feel safe with her. (pt1) I couldn t feel agitated towards her, because it was like there was just good energy coming off of her (pt4)

21 Strongest themes 4 themes were present in all of the interviews: Overwhelmed /out of control Regaining control Focus on the breath Adapting the practice (making it your own)
22 Control through mindfulness Most themes were present in all 5 interviews Those not on medication reported that they gained control through mindfulness before the medication started to work
