3 1 2 Purpose Good signage informs and directs audiences, and efficiently identifies locations and services. Good signage also requires little effort from the audience using it, so clarity, placement and uniformity are important. It is essential that UOW maintains a high standard for coordinated design in every aspect of its operations. A well designed and consistently applied visual identity in the built environment will reinforce UOW s brand. This document sets the standards for signage at UOW. These guidelines are intended to define requirements and considerations for: fixed internal signage temporary external signage signage projects (including fixed external signage). Furthermore, these guidelines: provide processes for optimal sign design, procurement, and installation assist Facilities Management Division (FMD) and Print and Distribution Services (PDS) in providing efficient, quality, compliant, transparent, and accessible signage for UOW stakeholders aim to minimise accessibility compliance risk. These guidelines are for buyers (those who order signs within UOW) and suppliers (contractors making and installing signs) of UOW signage at any UOW onshore campus. Signage specifications may be used as a template or starting point to develop signage. These specifications are listed in Appendix C: Signage Design and Production Specifications, and are available by request from UOW Strategic Marketing & Communications (SMC) branduow@uow.edu.au. Definitions Word/Term Fixed internal signage Fixed external signage Temporary external signage FMD PDS SMC Definition (with examples if required) Permanent pedestrian signage that is affixed to the inside of a building (wall, ceiling, door, plinth or window) Permanent pedestrian signage that is affixed to the outside of a building or within the campus environment (wall, window, ground, post) Event-related signage that will be displayed for a set period and removed after the event Facilities Management Division Print and Distribution Services Strategic Marketing & Communications UOW_GUI_331 Signage Design and Production Guidelines December 2016 Page 3 of

4 Brand elements Buyer Brandworks UOW executive Fonts, colours, logos, slogans, characters, and other unique and protectable assets Staff or project owners that originate a signage need A web-based brand asset management tool to de-centralise branded content creation and workflow management One or more of the following: Vice-Chancellor and Principal Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor Deputy Vice-Chancellor Chief Administrative Officer Pro Vice-Chancellor Chief Finance Officer 3 Accessibility 1. The University recognises the importance of equality of access to its environments by individuals that may be visually or physically impaired. Navigation 2. Language 3. Orientation 4. Where a person with a disability will reach a decision point and be unable to follow the primary access direction (e.g. via stairs) an alternative route must be pointed out (e.g. to lift). Signage shall use the clearest and simplest language possible, and mustn t assume that the audience will have prior knowledge of the environment. Acronyms must be initially expanded. Identification of organisational units should be consistent; see Section 4 Standard Signage Content. Signage must not rely on text that is purely vertical to communicate. Where text departs from the standard left-to-right orientation for cosmetic reasons, the same content should also be applied in the right-reading orientation (for accessibility). Colour and finishing Signage shall not rely solely on colour to communicate. Text and graphics should be understandable when viewed without colour. Foreground and background colour combinations must provide sufficient contrast when viewed by someone with limited vision. Vision Australia provides further information about Accessible design for public buildings ( Note: the colour combinations chosen for signage reflect accessibility requirements. 5 8. Braille 9. High gloss paints and finishes (that could reduce readability) should be avoided. Signage that identifies amenities must include braille. See the specification is09: Toilet Wall & Blade contained in Appendix C: Signage Design and Production Specifications. 4 Standard Signage Content Identification of organisational units 10. The language appearing on UOW fixed signage should be developed on a case-by-case (project) basis. 11. Signs must communicate using the correct identifying names within UOW s organisational structure. Where possible, avoid organisational unit prefixes ( Faculty of, School of, Department of etc.) Acronyms should be initially spelled out, and used in condensed form only after careful consideration of the audience s familiarity with their meaning. Refer to Appendix B: Identification of organisational units vs audience. 5 Fixed Internal Signage Description Internal wayfinding signs should be placed on a predetermined, suggested or common path of travel within the space. Notwithstanding Statutory signs, signage should serve one of three purposes: Information, Direction and Identification. Internal signage hierarchy (see Figure 1) is organised to meet audience needs (See Table 1). Buyers may seek advice and input from PDS, who will assess need, make recommendations and propose a solution (provide approvable and supplier-ready drawings)based on specifications. PDS will procure production and installation from a supplier, and manage invoicing. Suppliers must meet UOW s work safety requirements (including safe-work method statements, and contractor induction. This is managed by FMD. The supplier is responsible for safe and appropriate installation and of fixed internal signage. Where UOW signage specifications have been used, project owners may approve the content, placement and installation of internal signage works. Approval of expenditure must be sought and given in accordance with UOW s Delegations of Authority Policy. 6 Temporary External Signage Description 1. Temporary external wayfinding signage placement should be organised around a logical pathway for the visitor audience. Temporary signage should not duplicate fixed signage. Examples include: Parking signage Standard traffic directional signage, within campus RTA/Local Government signage outside campus. Operation 7. Project sponsors may seek advice and input from FMD or PDS. 8. PDS or FMD shall coordinate with each other to scope, recommend and propose solutions based on organisational needs, in conjunction with SMC. 9. PDS may propose to FMD to procure production and installation from a supplier. 10. Suppliers must meet UOW s work safety requirements (including safe-work method statements, and contractor induction. This is managed by FMD. Approval 11. FMD will coordinate and escalate the approval of recommendations and expenditure to Senior Executive. 8 Project resources 1. 11 Appendix A: Signage Installation Positioning A sign s position should make its purpose unambiguous. It must not obstruct emergency signage or exits. Wall mounted heights Wall mounted internal signage should be placed within a preferred height of between 1400mm and 1600mm. However, it can be placed at a minimum of 1000mm from the ground. For consistency, the suggested position of wall mounted signs should be 1600mm from the top of the sign excluding braille/tactile signage. Suspended & cantilevered heights Suspended and cantilevered signage should be placed at a height of 2400mm to the underside of the sign; however, where space does not permit the bottom edge can be as low 00mm. Braille/tactile placement Braille/tactile signage with one line of text should be positioned so that the line of tactile characters isno lower than 1250mm and no higher than 1350mm from the ground. For consistency, single line braille/tactile signs will be placed 1250mm above floor level, to the underside of the sign. Toilet identification braille signage must be positioned on the wall area on the latch-side of the door, spaced50mm from the architrave. Where this location is not possible the sign may be placed on the hinge-side of the door, and as a last alternative, centred on the door itself.
