1 MASTER OF SECONDARY TEACHING Teaching Area Requirements Within this program students must have two teaching areas or one teaching area plus the Learning Enhancement specialisation. Option 1: Two teaching areas to Senior requires two distinct teaching areas with a minimum of six relevant courses in each area e.g. Mathematics and Biology. Option 2: One teaching area to Senior (requiring six relevant courses) with a second teaching area to Junior or years 7-10 (requiring four relevant courses) Option 3: One teaching area to Senior (requiring six relevant courses) and Learning Enhancement as a specialisation (requiring six courses in Psychology). Please also note: 1. Some of the teaching areas below are not available to Junior only and can only be taken to Senior. These are indicated with an asterisk. 2. Courses completed within post-graduate degrees may be used to support the second teaching area, but at least one teaching area needs to be drawn from a completed Bachelor level degree. 3. A minimum GPA of 4 at Bachelor level is a requirement of entry irrespective of post-graduate qualifications. Learning Enhancement specialization Prior study must include six psychology courses. Business* relevant to the teaching of Business including: Economics Accounting Business Systems Business Communications Technologies Business/Corporate Communication Entrepreneurship Banking and finance Commerce Marketing Business Law Policy and Governance Courses within the following degrees are generally inappropriate for the purpose of demonstrating discipline knowledge: Journalism Advertising Human resources Hotel Management Hospitality and Tourism Event Management Sport Management International Business Supply Chain Management/Logistics 1

2 Design Technologies relevant to the teaching of Design Technologies including: Elements and Principles of Design Manufacturing Technologies and Processes Construction Technologies and Processes Graphic design 3D Modelling and CADD systems Architecture Project Management Design Processes (commercial, industrial design contexts): o Interior design o Product design o Typographic design o 3D design o Digital Modelling Applicants with a Trade Qualification who also hold a Bachelor degree that includes one teaching area may also be eligible for this teaching area. Digital Technologies relevant to the teaching of Digital Technologies including: Computer Programming Procedural or algorithmic design systems Architecture of information systems Design, development and evaluation of computer programs Manipulation of data within a database Human/computer interaction Computer systems Artificial Intelligence Procedural or algorithmic design systems Web design Interactive Applications Development Web Technologies Drama Prior study completed at Bachelor level must include courses that provide a breadth and balance of discipline knowledge relevant to the teaching of Drama including: Acting for Stage Scriptwriting History of Theatre World/Australian Theatre Applied Theatre Acting for Screen Devising theatre/devising Drama Stagecraft Directing for the stage Process Drama Interpreting play texts for performance Theatre forms/styles 2

3 Courses within the following degrees are generally inappropriate for the purpose of demonstrating discipline knowledge: English Film Studies Advertising and Marketing Music relevant to the teaching of English including: Creative writing Literature Linguistics Functional and Traditional Grammar Film and Media Studies Journalism Courses within the following degrees are generally inappropriate for the purpose of demonstrating discipline knowledge: Advertising and Marketing Law Psychology Human resources English as a Second Language Geography relevant to the teaching of Geography including: Conservation and sustainability studies Social environments Human geography Physical geography Urban planning Environmental planning Environmental studies Environmental sciences Disaster management Development studies Ecology 3

4 Health and Physical Education relevant to the teaching of Health and Physical Education including BOTH health and physical education related courses: Biophysical foundations of human movement Anatomy Physiology Biomechanics Motor learning Sociocultural foundations of human movement Sport sociology Sport history Sport coaching and pedagogy Sport psychology Health studies Health promotion and public health Youth health issues (e.g., sexuality and relationships) Courses within the following degrees are generally inappropriate for the purpose of demonstrating discipline knowledge: History Sports marketing Sports management Sports journalism relevant to the teaching of History. Ancient history Modern history Australian history Regional histories including history of SE Asia, American histories, European etc. Historical inquiry processes Some specific sociology courses (but not sufficient without additional designated history courses) Courses that are generally inappropriate for the purpose of demonstrating discipline knowledge in history Broadly based sociology courses Theology courses Criminology courses 4

5 Instrumental Music* relevant to the teaching of Instrumental Music: History of Music Music Theory Instrument Performance/Ensemble Playing at University level Instrument Pedagogy is helpful but not required Instrumental Music encompasses all instruments e.g. orchestral, keyboard, guitar, voice. Languages other than English (LOTE)* To be eligible to take LOTE as a teaching area, applicants will need to meet one of the following entry requirements: Bachelor degree with at least six courses in one of the recommended teaching languages. Non-native speakers proficiency in the teaching language must be at a level sufficient to teach the spoken and written forms of the language to Year 12 and to students for whom it is a first, second or heritage language. Native speakers of their teaching language must have also completed a Bachelor degree that includes language teaching and/or linguistics courses. The languages that are most likely to be offered in placement schools Chinese (Mandarin) French German Italian Japanese Spanish Courses that are generally inappropriate for the purpose of demonstrating discipline knowledge in LOTE Humanities (e.g. creative writing, communication, culture courses) Social Sciences (with no language or linguistics study) English literature. Mathematics relevant to the teaching of Mathematics: Algebra Calculus Geometry Trigonometry Probability and Statistics Logic Number theory Topology Economics Courses that are generally inappropriate for the purpose of demonstrating discipline knowledge in Mathematics Broadly based business courses Marketing Accounting and finance courses where no other specific Maths courses have been completed 5

6 Music relevant to the teaching of Music: History of Music Music Theory (Composition is recommended but not a requirement) Performance Science - Junior only relevant to the teaching of science to junior. These are most likely to be specific to one area of science or may relate to several different scientific disciplines. 7 Science - Earth and Environmental Science* relevant to the teaching of Earth and Environmental Science: Physical Geology Physical Geography Earth Science Environmental Science Ecology Marine Science Biodiversity and/or Sustainability Soil Science Courses that are generally inappropriate for the purpose of demonstrating discipline knowledge in Earth and Environmental Science Population Geography Chemistry Physics (except some Geophysics) Biology (except ecologically-focused courses) Science - Physics* relevant to the teaching of Physics: Physics - dynamics, thermodynamics, nuclear, electricity and magnetism, optics, statistical mechanics, modern physics Engineering Physics Mathematics courses are necessary but do not count when finding courses for Physics as a teaching area. Courses that are generally inappropriate for the purpose of demonstrating discipline knowledge in Physics Chemistry Biology Biophysics (some exceptions) Visual Arts, including practical art-making courses, relevant to the teaching of Visual Arts: Studio Arts Courses (Sculpture, Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Jewellery/Small Objects) Other Practical Fine Art courses (e.g. Installation Art; Community Art; Body Adornment Art, etc.) Art Theory courses (e.g. Mapping the Modern, Mapping the Postmodern, Art & Gender, Aboriginal Art and Culture, Art of Protest, etc.) 7
