Design & Technology Department The options available to you at Key Stage 4 Within the Design and Technology Department we offer a range of GCSE and BTEC courses for you to choose from going into year 9 We encourage all students to take at least one Design and Technology option but to choose carefully the one which suits you best Today we will look at which Design & Technology course is right for YOU.

GCSE Product Design What is Product Design? In Product Design you get to think up your own ideas & make them real rather than just learning on Paper You will learn how to think up a new idea, research to ensure that your product would sell, design it from scratch and then use the workshops to actually make it from scratch. You will build up skills in Graphics, Workshop Tools/Materials and Analysing products Product Design teaches you Problem Solving and Analytical skills which can help you with other subjects and out of school, whatever career you choose

GCSE Product Design About the course In year 9 & 10 you will build up skills, knowledge and understanding though mini projects such as: Wooden Bookends, MP3 Speaker etc The GCSE is made up of 60% Coursework and 40% Exam The Coursework is assessed through one big Design & Make Project where you will design a new product from scratch and make it A single Exam will be sat in year 11 and will test you on your designing skills, your knowledge of materials and products and your understanding of the Design Industry

GCSE Product Design Which Materials are you most interested in??? In Product Design all students will learn to work in a range of different materials such as Wood, Metal, Plastic, Card, Paper, Electronics, Textiles etc Because Product Design is such a flexible course, you will have the freedom to choose the projects and materials which are of most interest to you and your future career When choosing GCSE Product Design as an option, you will need to state which materials are of most interest to you, so that the curriculum can be tailored to your needs. You must indicate an interest in one of the following: Graphics Technology: Technical Drawing, Graphic Design, Paper & Card Materials Technology: Wood, Metal, Plastics and associated workshop skills Electronics Technology: Circuit Making & Design incl programmable microchips

GCSE Product Design Future Careers As well as being a fun, interesting and challenging subject, Product Design can lead into future careers in Graphic Design, Architecture, Interior Design, Web Design, Model making, Engineering, Construction, Product Design & many more. For more information please see Mr Walters, Miss Etheridge, Miss Zaffarese or Miss Tynan

GCSE Cooking & Nutrition About the course Food Technology is changing! Due to changes in government rules for the whole country, Food Technology and Catering will no longer be offered as GCSE Subjects. Instead there will be one brand new course offered to all students across the country This new course will likely be called GCSE Cooking and Nutrition'.

GCSE Cooking & Nutrition Is this new course for me??? Practical sessions to ensure a greater understanding of the working characteristics of food materials develop knowledge and understanding of the functional properties and chemical processes as well as the nutritional content of food and drink. Using current media information and various media techniques, you will investigate and debate the relationship between diet, nutrition and health, including the physiological and psychological effects of poor diet and health. You will enjoy exploring food through its sensory qualities whilst at the same time using food safety and hygiene considerations to manage their environment. The course embraces and emphasises understanding of and enjoyment of British and international cuisines.
