1 GCSE Fine Art Fine Art is about producing art chiefly for its aesthetic value, as opposed to applied art. It involves being introduced to a variety of experiences, exploring a range of fine art media, techniques and processes and becoming aware of both traditional and new technologies. Students explore relevant images, artefacts and resources relating to art and design from the past and from recent times. This is integral to the investigating and making process. Their responses to these examples, shown through practical and critical activities demonstrate an understanding of different styles, genres and traditions. Students explore drawing using a variety of methods and media on a range of scales, using sketchbooks, workbooks and design sheets to underpin their work where appropriate. The course allows for students to work in one or more area(s) of Fine Art, including: - painting and drawing, mixed media, including collage and assemblage, sculpture and printmaking: relief and intaglio. A typical project might involve producing a series of self portraits using different media and styles of working based on the work of contemporary portrait artist Danny O'Connor Unit 1 Portfolio of work (coursework) students will complete 2-3 projects throughout Year 10/11 (60% of final mark). Unit 2 Externally Set Task (exam) students will choose from a variety of questions.

2 GCSE Graphic Communication Graphic Communication is the art of using design elements (as typography and images) to convey information or create an effect. Students produce practical and critical/contextual work in one or more area(s) including illustration, advertising, packaging design, design for print, communication graphics, computer graphics, multimedia and photography. Students will gather information relating to a particular theme/artist/designer. They will analyse existing products and identify a target audience. Students must develop and explore ideas using media, processes and resources including: drawing, painting, print, collage, mixed media, stencilling, and ICT. Design ideas must be refined using colour, material experimentation and the influence of a designer/artist style. A typical example of a project would be to design a laptop or mobile phone skin based on the work of contemporary artists Alexander Blue and Jon Burgerman. Unit 1 Portfolio of work (coursework) students will complete 2-3 projects throughout Years 10/11(60% of final mark). Unit 2 Externally Set Task (exam) - students will choose from a variety of questions. -

Students will experiment with various surface manipulation techniques such as printing, constructing, hand and machine embroidery, dyeing materials and batik. Students will research artists and a theme, collect visual resources from first and second hand observation, produce a series of related fabric samples and develop designs for a textile outcome. Work will be documented in sketchbooks, mood boards and design sheets. All students will personally reflect on each stage of the process in order to inform future developments in their work. A typical example of a project students will study would be to Look at the work of designers Claire Coles and Maxine Sutton and explore their use of imagery, colour, pattern and texture. Produce a range of fabric samples in response to the theme. Design and create a mixed media textile outcome such as a bag, skirt or wall hanging. Unit 1 Portfolio of work (coursework) students will complete 2-3 projects throughout Years 10/11 (60% of final mark). Unit 2 Externally Set Task (exam) - students will choose from a variety of questions.
