4. Follow Diagrams C-J to make Blocks 1-8. For more accurate placement of Petal shapes, fold each square in half vertically and horizontally and lightly crease. Place Petal appliqué shapes adhesive side down on the right side of the indicated background fabric, centering the Petal points along the creases. Leave ¼" (6.35mm) at the edge for the seam allowance. Note fabric direction on Petals and backgrounds. Following the manufacturer s directions, fuse the shapes in place. Use a coordinating thread and small buttonhole or zig-zag stitch to secure and finish the edges of the appliqué pieces. 9. The backing yardage, Cows (13877-Blue), is sufficient to cover the length and width of the top. If using a long arm machine to quilt, extra fabric basted onto backing edges might be necessary. 10. Press finished quilt top and backing. Tape the backing wrong side up to a firm surface. Layer batting and quilt top (right side up). Baste the layers together with safety pins. 11. Refer to quilting Diagram (O) for a simple yet creative quilting design. Quilt in-the-ditch (next to the seam) to anchor the layers together. Use freezer paper to make a 10" (25.4cm) diameter circle as a template and quilt overlapping half circles in Rows 1, 2, and 3. In a like manner, use a 4" (10.16cm) diameter circle to quilt the Nursery Rhyme sashing strips. Refer to Diagram P for easy, continuous quilting suggestions. Quilt the curved (1 & 2) and scalloped (3 & 4) lines in each row to make the complete pattern. Tip: Sewing with an even-feed foot is helpful when quilting through layers. This feeds the fabric more evenly and prevents wrinkles on the back of the quilt. Dia. O Dia. P 1 3 4 2 1 2 3 4 12. Once quilting is complete, square up corners and edges, trimming excess backing and batting even with the quilt top. 13. To make the Gray Dots (13876-Lt. Gray) binding, remove selvages and sew the short ends of the 2 ½" x 42" (6.35cm x 106.68cm) strips RST end to end at a 45 angle to make one continuous strip; press seams open. Press one short end ¼" (6.35mm) to the wrong side. Fold in half lengthwise with wrong sides together; press. Leaving a 2" (5.08cm) tail on the folded end, place cut edges of folded binding even with the edge of the quilt top and sew, mitering the corners. Overlap ends, trim any excess and finish sewing the binding. Fold binding over to back and hand stitch. Dia. Q Finished Care Instructions Machine wash in cold water; gentle cycle. Tip: Before drying, check for fabric dyes that may have run. If fabric dyes run, rewash and rinse using Shout Color Catcher. Lay flat to dry or tumble dry low. page 7
