STUDIO e PROJECTS Sewing Page 3 of 5 Sew using a ¼" seam allowance with right sides together (RST) unless otherwise indicated. Press seams as shown by arrows. Add Side Borders to Center Panel 1. Position the 5 ½" x 28 ½" Fabric 7262-66 and Fabric 7251-55 rectangles on either side of the fussy cut 20 ½" x 28 ½" Fabric 7243-55 center panel. Pin and sew, pressing seams as shown by the arrows (Dia. A). The center should measure 40 ½" x 28 ½". (A) Add Appliqué Squares 2. Cut six 5 ½" x 5 ½" squares from the lightweight fusible. Cut out the center, (B) leaving 1" around the outside. 3. Carefully center and place the fusible on the WRONG SIDE of a panel square on the 7243-55 panel. Fuse according to the manufacturer s directions (Dia. B). Fussy cut a 5" square. Remove the paper backing. Repeat step for remaining five squares. 4. Center over the seam joining the 7262-66 and 7251-55 borders, leaving 2 ¾" at the top and bottom, and 4" between each square. Fuse according the manufacturer s directions (Dia. C). 5. Secure edges with a small zigzag, satin, or buttonhole stitch and coordinating thread. (C)
STUDIO e PROJECTS Page 4 of 5 Making the Pinwheel Border 6. Join the Cream & Sugar triangles with the Lipstick and Grape triangles on the short sides as shown (Dia. D). Press seams as shown by the arrows. 7. Join the triangles made in the previous step, on the long side, with the triangles made from the 7262-66 Fabric (Dia. E). Trim to measure 3 ½" square if necessary, keeping seams centered. Press seams as shown. (D) Make 8 (E) Make 8 Make 16 Make 16 8. Make the pinwheel blocks by sewing two triangle units, made in the previous step, as shown. Press as shown. Each pinwheel row should measure 3 ½" x 6 ½". 9. Pin the two rows together, nesting seams, and sew (Dia. F). Press seams as shown. The pinwheel blocks should measure 6 ½" square. (F) Make 2 Make 4 10. Lay out one Grape and two Lipstick pinwheel blocks with two 4 ½" x 6 ½" and two 6 ½" x 7 ½" Fabric 7261-66 rectangles as shown. Sew together and press seams as shown (Dia. G). Repeat to make two rows. The pinwheel rows should measure 6 ½" x 40 ½". (G) Make 2
STUDIO e PROJECTS Page 5 of 5 Add the Top and Bottom Outside Borders 11. Lay out the 1 ½" x 40 ½" Fabric 1351-Grass strips, 6 ½" x 40 ½" Pinwheel Borders, and 4 ½" x 40 ½" Fabric 7251-55 rectangles at the top and bottom as shown. Pin and sew, pressing seams as shown by the arrows (Dia. H). The finished top should measure 40 ½" x 50 ½". (H) Finishing Backing, Layering, Basting, Quilting 12. Cut the 2 yard backing fabric into one 57" x wof with the selvages trimmed, one 6" x 40 ½", and one 6" x 17" piece. Sew the two 6" pieces on the short ends to make one long piece, 6" x 57". Sew to one long side of the large piece for a backing approximately 47" x 57" (Dia. I). Press the seams open. Press the backing fabric, and completed quilt top well. Layer backing (wrong side up), batting, and quilt top (right side up). Baste well. Hand or machine quilt according to personal preference. You may want to stitch around the design printed on the center panel, and in the seams around the borders or use overall free motion swirls and loops. (I) Binding 13. Sew the five 2 ½" x wof strips together at a 45 angle to make one continuous strip. Fold in half lengthwise with wrong sides together, and press. Sew the binding to the front of the quilt, raw edges together. Turn the folded edge to the back, and hand stitch in place. 2012 Studio e Fabrics
