Quilt designed by Terri Butler Materials and Cutting Note: WOF is width of fabric from selvage edge to selvage edge. 2/3 yard floral panel, SB20260-450 1 rectangle each 16 1/2" x 22 1/2" and 16 1/2" x 11", keeping floral motif centered in each. 1/2 yard large floral, SB20261-320 1 strip 10 1/2" x WOF; trim to 10 1/2" x 42". 2 2/3 yards orange paper print, SB20263-450 5 strips 3 1/2" x WOF for border. 6 strips 2 1/4" x WOF for binding. 1 rectangle 37 1/2" x 54 1/2" for background. 5/8 yard gold paper print, SB20263-320 12 small quarter-circles and 4 large curved corners referring to instructions. 1/2 yard stripe, SB20262-450 2 bias strips each 1 1/2" x 18 1/2" and 1 1/2" x 16 1/2" for large block frame. 1/4 yard light orange swirl, SB20103-430 2 strips 2 1/2" x WOF; cut into (4) 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" strips and (4) 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" strips. 1/2 yard light green swirl, SB20103-830 2 strips 2 1/2" x WOF; cut into (4) 2 1/2" x 8 1/2" strips and (4) 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" strips. 16 small curved corners referring to instructions. 1/4 yard white squiggle, SB20053-101 1 strip 4 1/2" x WOF; cut into (4) 4 1/2" squares. Cut 4 small quarter-circles from remainder of strip referring to instructions. 5/8 yard dark green solid 12 strips 1" x WOF; cut into (4) 17 1/2" lengths and 2 strips each of the following lengths: 42", 37 1/2", 22 1/2", 19 1/2", 18 1/2", 15 1/2", 14 1/2", 11 1/2" and 11". 3 strips 1" x WOF. 3 yards backing fabric 2 pieces 51" x WOF for backing. 51" x 68" batting piece Thread to match dark green solid for appliqué Piecing the Blocks Note: Use a 1/4" seam allowance for all stitching. Press seams as directed. 1. Prepare templates for the small quarter-circle and curved corner pieces. 2. Make 1 copy each of the large quarter-circle and curved corner half patterns. Trim each pattern on the red edge. 3. Fold a large piece of paper (at least 13" square for each template) in half. With the paper still folded, place the red edge of the curved corner pattern on the fold of the paper. Cut out the pattern through all layers to make the complete large curved corner pattern. Repeat to make the complete large quarter-circle pattern. 4. Cut out small quarter-circle and large and small curved corner pieces referring to the cutting list above for fabrics and number to cut of gold, white and light green pieces. 5. Fold each small curved corner piece in half and lightly crease to mark the center of the curved edge. Repeat with the small quarter-circle pieces. 6. Referring to the diagrams on the next page, sew a small gold quarter-circle piece to a small light green curved corner piece, carefully matching outer edges and the creased centers and easing the curves when stitching. Clip the seam allowance of the curve almost to the stitching line. Press seam allowance toward the quarter-circle piece to complete (1) 4" x 4" gold unit. Repeat to make 12 gold units. Repeat with small white quarter-circle pieces and small light green curved corner pieces to make 4 white units.
Gold Unit Make 12 White Unit Make 4 7. Stitch 4 gold units together to make the 4" x 14 1/2" top row, paying careful attention to the positioning of each unit. Press seams to 1 side. Repeat to make the bottom row. 8. Sew 2 white units together and add a gold unit to each end to make a 4" x 14 1/2" center row. Press seams to 1 side. Repeat to make a second center row. 9. Join the rows to complete the 14 1/2" x 14 1/2" small block. Press seam to 1 side. Small Block 10. Sew a 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" light orange strip to 1 side of each 4 1/2" white square. Press seam toward the strip. Add a 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" light orange strip to an adjacent side of each unit. Press seam toward the strip. 11. Repeat step 11 with the 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" light green strips and then the 2 1/2" x 8 1/2" light green strips to complete (4) 8 1/2" x 8 1/2" quarter-cabin units. Quarter-Cabin Unit Make 4 12. Place the large quarter-circle template on a quarter-cabin unit, square corner of the template on the green corner of the stitched unit. Mark around the curved edge of the template. Trim the stitched unit on the marked line to complete 1 large quarter-circle. Repeat with the remaining stitched units to make 4 large quarter-circles. 13. Repeat steps 5 and 6 with the large gold curved corner pieces and large quarter-circles to make (4) 8 1/2" x 8 1/2" cabin units. Cabin Unit Make 4
14. Join the 4 units on the gold edges to make the 16 1/2" x 16 1/2" large block center. Press seams to 1 side. Sew the 1 1/2" x 16 1/2" stripe bias strips to opposite sides of the block center. Press seams toward the strips. Stitch the 1 1/2" x 18 1/2" stripe bias strips to the remaining sides to complete the 18 1/2" x 18 1/2" large block. Press seams toward the strips. Large Block Completing the Appliqué Sections 1. Sew the 1" x 42" dark green strips to the long sides of the large floral strip and the 1" x 11 1/2" dark green strips to the top and bottom. Press seams toward the strips. 2. Repeat step 1 to frame the large and small blocks and the 2 panel rectangles using dark green strips as follows: Large panel rectangle: 1" x 22 1/2" sides, 1" x 17 1/2" top and bottom Small panel rectangle: 1" x 11" sides, 1" x 17 1/2" top and bottom Large block: 1" x 18 1/2" sides, 1" x 19 1/2" top and bottom Small block: 1" x 14 1/2" sides, 1" x 15 1/2" top and bottom 3. Turn 1/2" of the dark green strips to the back of each framed unit all around and press to hold to complete the appliqué sections. Finishing the Quilt Refer to the cover quilt as needed throughout the following steps. 1. Apply a heavy coat of spray starch or spray fabric stabilizer to the 37 1/2" x 54 1/2" orange rectangle and press dry. 2. Place the framed large floral rectangle on the orange rectangle, 6" down from the top edge and 2 1/2" over from the left edge. Pin all around to hold firmly in place. 3. Using thread to match dark green solid, machine-stitch in the ditch of the seam between the dark green frame and large floral rectangle through all layers. Note: The outside folded edge of the dark green frame will be loose to form a decorative flange around each appliquéd section. 4. Trim orange background away behind the appliquéd section, leaving 1/4" untrimmed beyond line of stitching. 5. Place the framed small block 2 1/2" down from the top and 7 1/2" from the left edge, partially covering the floral rectangle as shown in the cover quilt image. Pin in place. Repeat steps 3 and 4, trimming away both orange background and the overlapped section of the floral appliqué.
6. Place the framed large panel piece 8 1/2" down from the top and 2 1/2" from the right edge, partially covering the small block. Pin in place. Repeat steps 3 and 4, trimming away both orange background and the overlapped section of the small block. 7. In the same manner add the large block and the small panel rectangle referring to the cover quilt for positioning and placing the small panel 2 1/2" from the bottom edge and 3" from the right edge of the orange background. 8. Sew the (3) 1" x WOF dark green strips short ends together to make a long strip. Press seams open. Cut into (2) 54 1/2" strips. 9. Press the 1" x 54 1/2" and 1" x 37 1/2" dark green strips in half lengthwise with wrong sides together to make 1/2"-wide folded strips. 10. Place the 54 1/2" folded strips on top of the long side edges of the orange background with raw edges aligned and the folds toward the appliquéd center. Pin to hold. Repeat with the 37 1/2" folded strips on the top and bottom edges. Machine-baste in place 1/8" from the edge all around. Remove pins. 11. Stitch the 3 1/2" x WOF orange strips short ends together to make a long strip. Press seams to 1 side. Cut into 2 strips each 54 1/2" and 43 1/2". Sew the 54 1/2" strips to the long sides of the quilt center and the 43 1/2" strips to the top and bottom. Press seams toward the strips to complete the top, leaving the dark green folded strips flat on top of the quilt center as a decorative flange. 12. Remove the selvage edges from the 51" backing pieces. Join the pieces on the long edges with a 1/2" seam allowance. Press seam open. Trim the edges to make a 51" x 68" backing piece. 13. Layer the quilt top and backing with the batting piece. Quilt as desired. Trim edges even. Prepare orange paper print binding and bind using your favorite methods.
