Mark 3-3/8 to left of upper right corner of a gray owl print 9-1/4 x 11-5/8 owl body piece. Mark 3/8 up from bottom right corner. Trim upper right corner from mark to mark. Repeat on a total of three gray owl and two cream owl 9-1/4 x 11-5/8 owl body pieces. Page 2 2. Cut five each Templates A, F and I pieces from rust diamond floral. Cut five each reverse Templates A, F and I pieces from rust diamond floral. 3. Cut five each Templates B, E and D pieces from cream diamond floral. Cut five each reverse Templates B, E and D pieces from cream diamond floral. 4. Cut five each Templates G and H from tan mini floral. Cut five each reverse Templates G and H pieces from tan diamond floral. 5. Cut five each Templates C, J and K from black solid. Cut five each reverse Templates C, J and K pieces from black solid. 6. Stitch rust diamond floral Template A piece left side of a gray owl body with top right corner trimmed. 7. Stitch a black solid C piece between cream B diamond floral B and D pieces. 8. Sew a rust diamond floral F piece to bottom of a cream diamond floral E piece. 9. Sew the B/C/D unit above the E/F unit. Add G and H tan mini floral triangles to complete the face section. G C E F H D 11. Sew black solid J triangle J to left side of owl. Add rust diamond floral I piece to right side of owl, then add K black solid piece as shown. 12. Draw a diagonal line across the wrong side of the 3-1/4 and 4 black solid squares. 13. Place the 3-1/4 marked black solid square on left, bottom edge and 4 marked black solid square on right bottom edge of owl block. Stitch along marked lines. Trim seam allowances to 1/4. Press triangles out. Make a total of three blocks with gray owl print bodies facing left. 14. Make a total of two blocks with cream owl print bodies facing left. 15. In the same manner, make two gray and three cream owl blocks facing to the right, using the owl pieces trimmed on the left and using reverse templates. K I 10. Stitch the face section on top of the body unit.
Page 3 Making the Cross Blocks: 1. Arrange one 3-1/2 leaf square, four 3-1/2 x 8 black mini floral strips and four 9-1/2 black solid quarter-square triangles as shown. Stitch pieces into rows then sew rows together. 2. Trim Cross Block to 12-1/2 square. 3. Make a total of ten Cross Blocks. Assembling the Quilt Top: 1. Referring to color quilt image, arrange blocks into five rows of four blocks each. Stitch blocks into rows. Sew rows together. 2. Stitch six 2-1/2 cream diamond floral strips together end-to-end. Cut into four equal length borders. Sew borders to right and left sides of quilt center. Press and trim excess. Add remaining borders to top and bottom of quilt center. Press and trim excess. 3. Make and add second border in the same manner as the first border using seven 2-1/2 rust diamond floral strips. 4. Stitch 5-1/2 x LOF large owl strips to right and left sides of quilt. Press and trim excess. Sew three 5-1/2 x remaining width of fabric large owl strips together end-to-end matching pattern as much as possible. Make a second border in the same manner. Add borders to top and bottom of quilt, press and trim excess. 5. Make and add fourth border in the same manner as the first border using eight 1-1/2 rust diamond strips. Finishing the Quilt: 1. Cut backing into two equal lengths. Sew the two lengths of backing together along selvage edges creating a two-panel wide backing. Layer the quilt backing, batting and quilt top. Baste layers together. 2. Quilt or tie as desired. 3. Prepare binding from eight 2-1/2" x 44" strips of rust diamond floral fabric. Sew strips together into one long binding strip. Press strip in half lengthwise. 4. Carefully trim backing and batting even with quilt top. 5. Leaving an 8" tail of binding, sew binding to top of quilt through all layers matching all raw edges. Miter corners. Stop approximately 12" from where you started. Lay both loose ends of binding flat along quilt edge. Where these two loose ends meet, fold them back on themselves and press to form a crease. Using this crease as your stitching line, sew the two open ends of the binding together right sides together. Trim seam to 1/4" and press open. Finish sewing tape to quilt. 6. Turn binding to back of quilt and blind stitch in place. Sign and date your work.
