Page of 6 Instructions Read all instructions before beginning project. Use a ¼" seam allowance and stitch with fabrics right sides together. Patchwork Lay out the 5-5" squares randomly, or as shown in the chart. Blue was assigned #, Brown #, Yellow #, and Orange # (Diagram A). (A) Sew in columns of four or rows of. Match raw edges, pin, and sew with a neat, straight ¼" seam. Columns will measure 5" x 8 ½", rows 5" x 59". Press seams in alternate directions so they will nest for neat intersections. Sew columns (or rows) into an 8 ½" x 59" patchwork unit. Sew the Green ½" x 8" rectangle for bumper to the front bottom left, extending ". Sew the ½" x 6" Green rectangle tailpipe to the bottom right, extending " (Diagram B). (B) Windows and Roof On each of the Blue 8 ½" x 0 ½" window pieces, place a White " square in each corner. Fold in half diagonally with wrong sides together, and press. Baste corner 8 " from edge as shown (Diagram C). Fold back the loose folded edge, pin in place, and sew close to curved edge with blind hem stitch or machine straight stitch (Diagram D). (C) On the largest 8 ½" x 6 ½" Blue rectangle, use only two squares to make two curved corners (Diagram E). (E) (D)
Page of 6 Lay out pieces as shown and sew together, using the 8 ½" x 6 ½" Blue rectangle, ½" x 8 ½" White rectangle, 8 ½" x 0 ½" Blue window, White ½" x 8 ½" rectangle, 8 ½" x 0 ½" Blue window, White ½" x 8 ½" rectangle (repeat). End with the ½" x 8 ½" white rectangle (Diagram F). Press seams towards the White rectangles. (F) Use the " x ½" rectangle to shape the front of the windshield as follows: measure ½" from top edge of Blue windshield, mark with a pencil from this point to the corner of the 8 ½" x 6 ½" Blue windshield. Place the " x ½" White rectangle at this mark, match with the pencil line, and stitch. Press towards the White rectangle. Trim even with section. Trim Blue fabric from back if necessary (Diagram G). ½" (G) Sew together the ½" x wof and ½" x " White peace sign strips to make two units. They will be over-sized and trimmed later. Pin, starting at the back, to the top and bottom of the upper window unit, and sew together (Diagram H). (H) Pin to patchwork, matching at the back (right side). Sew, starting at the back. Trim front at angle to line up as shown. The VW is approximately " x 58". Appliqué Using the templates provided and the picture as a guide, hand appliqué Green handle to patchwork, and Green circles to wheels. Or, using lightweight fusible web, trace templates for handle and two Green wheel centers on the paper side. Cut around shapes, leaving a slight margin beyond the traced lines. Fuse to wrong side of fabrics. Cut out shapes on drawn lines. Remove paper backing from appliqués. Fuse in place on door and wheels, following manufacturer s directions. Machine appliqué around shapes, using a decorative satin or buttonhole stitch. Headlight and wheels can be prepared now, but will be appliquéd when quilt is finished. Using provided template, cut out two headlight shapes, right sides together; place on top of 6" square of batting. Sew around, leaving an opening for turning. Trim batting, turn inside out, and press. Repeat previous steps for both wheels, using a 0" square of batting. Press gently; slip stitch the openings closed.
Page 5 of 6 Finishing Note: Quilt on batting only. Backing will be sewn around and turned after quilting. Quilting: Place the pieced top on batting. Spray or pin baste. Quilt according to personal preference. Suggestions: medium stipple quilt working in random peace signs, daisy-like flowers, and words. In windows: curtains. Trim excess batting when quilting is complete. Layering: Place quilt top on quilt backing, right sides together, smoothing out wrinkles. Pin around edges. Sew using ¼" seam allowance; be sure to catch pieced quilt top and backing. Leave 0" opening to turn. Clip corners and curves. Turn inside out. Smooth edges and press. Slip stitch opening closed. Extra quilting lines may be added to windows, door, and bumpers to hold layers together. Accents: Pin wheels and headlight in place, using illustration for placement. Satin stitch or blanket stitch to secure. Extra quilting may be added to accent shapes. Add hanging sleeve if desired.
