SYAM AND B.G. CHAPMAN INTRODUCTION The 1996 publicaion is under consideraion for updaing by he Ausralian Seel Insiue. Since his is likely o be a lenghy process, his Technical Noe has been prepared in order o advise of known Erraa and of more up-o-dae informaion ha could be used by srucural engineers in he inerim for some secions of he publicaion. The exising Syam and Chapman publicaion is commonly referred o as he Blue Connecions Book and will be so referred o in his Technical Noe. ERRATA TO THE PUBLICATION [1] Page 4-5 In he expression for δ, n b = 4 should read n b 4. [] Page 5- Noe 1 Ref. [5.4] of he Blue Connecions Book also noes ha yield line disorion is never a criical limi sae. An addiional provision is also o ensure ha: b or d 670 < f y for local disorions on RHS/SHS walls o be negligible. [3] Page 5-3 The inequaliy in Fig. 5.1- of 0.5d b d d 1 should read 0.5d b d p d 1 [4] Page 6-6 and 6-11 which adjuss is included in used for CHS members should also be used for RHS/SHS members. The equaion for RHS and SHS columns should read: The expression for φn h for RHS/SHS column secions is missing he erm f ( n ) he design capaciy for he presence of axial compression. The same erm f ( n ) he case of CHS column members and he expression for f ( n ) φ N H = f ( ) ( ) y η + 4 1 β f ( n ') 1 β I should be noed ha he bracing clea in compression (load componen bearing ono he column face) is subjec o an overall revision when designing he clea (as noed below). DISCLAIMER: The Ausralian Seel Insiue Limied shall no be liable or responsible in any way whasoever and expressly disclaims any liabiliy or responsibiliy for any loss or damage, claim, proceedings coss or expenses howsoever incurred by any person wheher he clien or any hird pary and wheher accruing under saue or in negligence, conrac or oherwise a common law, including bu wihou in any way limied o any loss or damage, claim proceedings coss or expenses incurred as a resul of or in connecion wih he reliance wheher whole or parial by any person as aforesaid upon any par of he conens of his advice.

The connecion design model can also be used for he configuraion of he flaened end welded direcly o he suppor (i.e. no inermediae bracing clea and bols). In his insance, a check of he weld capaciy mus be underaken. [6] Page 7-11 The equaion which calculaes N e and expressed as: N e = 80 kn should read as: N e = 80 kn = 560 kn o allow he calculaion of block shear capaciy o reflec he fac ha here are wo plies being considered because he ube is flaened. [7] Page 8-7 In he evaluaion of y: c y = + w he equaion should read: y = c (see Noe below) [8] Page 9- Delee Noe 7 and renumber subsequen Noe numbers. Furher guidance is provided in he connecion design model on non-uniformly loaded welds. [9] Secions 11, 1, 13, 14 In all hese secions, funcions f(n) for RHS/SHS and f(n ) for CHS are used o relae he efficiency of he chord member of Y/T, X, and K/N gap connecions. All such funcions should have an upper limi of 1.0 on he values calculaed as clearly he efficiency canno exceed 1.0 bu he design model does no specify his upper limi. The references quoed as sources for he design expressions all have an upper limi of 1.0. [10] Page 13-1 In Fig.13.1, for he righ hand brace member (i.e. Brace Member ), he lower h 1 should read h. [11] Pages 13 9 and 13 14 The ex If g/b o is greaer han he larger of 1.5 (1-β) and ( 1 + ), he connecion should be reaed as wo T or Y connecions... should read as follows: If g/b o is greaer han 1.5(1-β), check he join also as wo separae T or Y joins. ASI TECHNICAL NOTE REF: ASI TN006 Version Page 3 of 5 REVIEW OF SECTIONS OF EXISTING PUBLICATION AND SUGGESTIONS AS TO UPDATED INFORMATION Secion 1 Inroducion This secion is now covered by Handbook 1 : Design of Srucural Seel Connecions (Ref. [1]). Secion Design Parameers This secion is now covered by Handbook 1 : Design of Srucural Seel Connecions (Ref. [1]). Secion 3 Base Plae A new separae Design Guide has been published for his connecion o hollow secion columns as par of Design Guide 7 Pinned Base Plae Connecions for Columns (Reference []). The compression case can be designed using he design model provided in Ranzi and Kneen s paper on pinned base plaes (Reference [3]). Packer in his commenary (see Reference [4]) on he Ranzi and Kneen publicaion (Reference. [3]) has some suggesions for he ension case which revolve around using he yield line approach adoped for he boled end plae connecion o hollow secions in he publicaions referenced by him in Reference [4]. Secion 4 Cap Plae The exising design model is based on wo references in he Blue Connecions Book namely Reference [4.1] (Packer and Henderson 199 ediion) and Reference [4.], a 1989 paper on boled hollow secion end plaes. More up-o-dae maerial is available from Reference [5] and he 1997 ediion of Packer and Henderson (Reference [6]). The references quoed by Packer (Reference [4]) are also likely o be useful and he AISC/STINA/AISI Manual also has design guidance on he cap plae (Reference [7]). Essenially, he major issue is he yield line mehod o be used for assessing he srengh of he plae. The design of he bols and welds is sraighforward. Secion 5 Side Plae Design Guide 3 (Reference [8]) provides an updaed design model which should be used in lieu of he design model in he Blue Connecions Book. The unique feaure of he exising design model in Secion 5 of he Blue Connecions Book is he connecion o a hollow secion column which is included in (Reference [8]). Secion 6 Bracing Clea The exising design model in he Blue Connecions Book covers an isolaed clea fixed o a hollow secion member, subjec o ension and compression loadings from a bracing member. For he compression case, only open secion bracing members are reaed while for hollow secion bracing members users are referred o Secions 7/8/9 of he Blue Connecions Book for he design of he clea for compression buckling (which is he conenious area see Technical Noe TN003 Reference [9]). The Blue Connecions Book may be used for ension bracing loadings (see also Secions 7, 8 and 9 below). A new publicaion by Hogan and Collins (Reference [10]) should be used for he bracing clea design in lieu of he exising design model for ubular compression bracing members in he Blue Connecions Book. Addiionally, furher work in his area has been done by oher sources such as he American Insiue of Seel Consrucion, CIDECT, HERA (NZ), which can also be consuled. Secion 7 Flaened End CHS Secion 8 Welded Tee End Secion 9 Sloed End Plae As indicaed in Technical Noe TN003, when hese connecions are subjec o compression, he exising design model in he Blue Connecions Book may be unconservaive. A new publicaion by Hogan and Collins (Reference [10]) should be used in lieu of he exising design model in he Blue Connecions Book for secions 7.3.1.3, 8.3..3 and 9.3.1.3.

ASI TECHNICAL NOTE REF: ASI TN006 Version Page 4 of 5 The exising design models for he Flaened End CHS and he Sloed End Plae are oherwise relaively sraighforward and any updaing of he exising design models should be based on Reference [1]. CIDECT publicaions (References [11], [1]) conain design models for he sloed end plae and welded ee end for CHS members (Reference [11]) and RHS/SHS members (Reference [1]). The AISC/STINA/AISI Manual (Reference [7]) conains design recommendaions for he Welded Tee and he Sloed End Plae Connecion, bu no he Flaened End connecion. Reference [5] also conains suggesed design models for hese same wo connecions bu no for he Flaened End connecion. Reference [5] is more recen han Reference [7]. Secion 10 Mired Knee This secion of he Blue Connecions Book deals only wih he welded mired knee connecion, eiher unsiffened or siffened wih a division plae. References [10.1], [10.] and [10.3] in he Blue Connecions Book seem o be he basis of he design model. There is a limied amoun of design guidance on hese connecions in he Packer/Henderson book (Reference [6]) or in he AISC/STINA/AISI Manual (Reference [7]) so a lieraure search will be needed o see if he laer informaion han he design model in he Blue Connecions Book is available, especially for he boled end plae. Packer s commenary in Reference [4] offers some possible sources of design guidance hough Packer has noed in correspondence here is no furher significan work in his area since Refs [10.1], [10.] and [10.3] in he Blue Connecions Book were published. Secion 11 Y and T Connecions Secion 1 X Connecion Secion 13 K and N Gap Connecions Secion 14 K and N Overlap Connecions Each of hese secions in he Blue Connecions Book deals wih he one or wo ypes of connecion in he ile for each secion and which covers boh circular and recangular hollow secion members. The exising design models are based on he 1991/199 CIDECT publicaions plus some oher maerial referenced in each secion. The laes CIDECT publicaions are shape based like he previous ediions one publicaion wih all connecion ypes for Circular Hollow Secions, one publicaion wih all connecion ypes for Recangular Hollow Secions. Reference [11] should be used for all he above connecion ypes for CHS secions and Reference [1] should be used for all he above connecion ypes for RHS/SHS secions in lieu of Secions 11 o 14 inclusive of he Blue Connecions Book. Reference [14] conains a summary of he informaion conained in References [11] and [1] and also can be used in lieu. Alernaively, Reference [5] conains he curren American approach.
