AR 225 ART AND DESIGN IES Abrad Barcelna DESCRIPTION: Art and Design is a practical curse that cvers the mst imprtant areas f studi practice. It prvides the understanding necessary t apprach Art and Design in an active way, paying special attentin t prcesses fllwed by artists, and helping students t discver the tls and the creativity that artists and designers use t explre reality. This curse aims t use the everyday envirnment as a surce f material and, being taught in Barcelna, it will take advantage f the vibrant art and design scene in this city. The syllabus emphasizes individual initiative, imaginatin and resurcefulness, striking a balance between art and design. As a creative field with n predetermined crrect answers t the prblems, infinite variatins in individual interpretatin and applicatin are pssible. Hence, it can be tailred t each persn s current abilities and skills. Students must prvide their wn materials. CREDITS: 3 credits CONTACT HOURS: 45 hurs LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION: English PREREQUISITES: Nne METHOD OF PRESENTATION: The cntents f the curse are structured thrugh the develpment f five prjects: City Bdy Tree Mvement Frame The use f prjects creates smaller, meaningful units, which allw us t learn a methdlgy that can be used fr each prject. Thrugh the prjects we will develp ur ability t design, rganize, deply, implement, dcument and finalize a prpsal thrugh practical exercises relating t techniques, cncepts, and attitudes t wrk. The sessins have time fr individual feedback n the students wrk, and always include teamwrk activity. The instructr will help the students t dig deeper int their persnal wrk, in rder t develp technical and cnceptual skills and at the same time t learn genuine team wrking skills. Each prject is related t fur r five class sessins. In each prject unit we will visit a museum r place f relevant interest t the curse. The classes are structured arund a practical exercise and a dialgue abut students presentatins. Fr every new cncept, there will be an intrductin t a related artist, and histrical backgrund and pertinent infrmatin will be furnished t students t fster class discussin. REQUIRED WORK AND FORM OF ASSESSMENT: Prject 1: 12% Prject 2: 12% Prject 3: 12% Prject 4: 12% Prject 5: 12% Jurnal: 15% Field trip write-ups 15% Class Participatin: 10% After the prject visit t the museum r place f interest, students will be required t write in a write-up f ne- tw pages plus pertinent images, in their student artist s jurnal giving their impressins, nting histrical infrmatin and hw this relates t the
students wn practice. The students will als engage in a practical exercise, resulting in a creative bdy f wrk that might include sketches, drawings, cllages and three-dimensinal prducts related t the particular prject. Thrughut and at the end f each prject the student artist s jurnal will be evaluated tgether with creative wrks prduced. At the end f the curse the student artist s jurnal will be graded. Additinally, a cmplete prtfli including all the student s creative/practical wrks will be required and qualified t give the final grade (mre detailed infrmatin n the cntents f this prtfli will be given t students at the beginning f the curse) Hmewrk will be als required, as well as pertinent readings that will prvide theretical and practical supprt fr the different prjects. Research activities and exercises between classes will cntribute t students jurnals and prtflis. LEARNING OUTCOMES: By the end f the curse students will be able t: Demnstrate the habit f bservatin and appreciatin f what surrunds us, and t reflect their view f reality with plastic/graphic representatin tls. Narrate and integrate their wealth f experience f Barcelna int their wrk, by stressing the ability t plunge int a new culture, and that f visual explratin and persnal expressiveness. Assess and distinguish the varius art frms studied in a cmprehensive way. Recgnize cnnectins between the intrinsic syntax f each technique r artistic language, and their specific field f study, thus enriching their primary prfessinal r academic training. Incrprate and develp a mre sphisticated and critical apprach t their wrk and that f thers, using intensively the habit f teamwrk. ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attendance is mandatry fr all IES Abrad classes, including curse-related excursins. Any exams, tests, presentatins, r ther wrk missed due t student absences can nly be rescheduled in cases f dcumented medical r family emergencies. If a student misses mre than three classes in any curse 3 percentage pints will be deducted frm the final grade fr every additinal absence. Seven absences in any curse will result in a failing grade.
