Dcument cde HygrLab C1 bench-tp indicatr: Dcument title Rtrnic AG Bassersdrf, Switzerland Page 3 f 28 Instructin Manual Dcument Type Applicability: This manual is valid fr the HygrLab C1 with firmware versin 1.xx, where 1.xx can be 1.0a, 1.1b etc. Changes t the last tw digits f the versin number reflect minr firmware changes that d nt affect the manner in which the instrument shuld be perated. 1 Overview The HygrLab C1 is a multifunctin bench-tp indicatr that can read simultaneusly up t 4 HygrClip 2 digital humidity-temperature prbes. The HygrLab C1 is primarily designed fr measuring the water activity (Aw) f fds, pharmaceuticals and csmetics. The HygrLab C1 can als be used in ther labratry applicatins that require measuring humidity and temperature. The HygrLab C1 is equipped with a digital interface. Depending n the ptin the HygrLab C1 has either a USB r an Ethernet interface r with bth. The HygrLab C1 features tw distinct perating mdes: Aw Measurement: This specialized mde is used fr measuring the water activity (Aw) f prduct samples and materials in bulk such as pwders, seeds, etc. When set t perate in the water activity mde, the HygrLab C1 autmatically displays humidity as Aw (1.000 a w = 100 %RH). The Aw Mde ffers the fllwing ptins: Accelerated water activity measurement (AwQuick): permits measuring the water activity f mst prducts in typically 5 minutes. The measurement starts simultaneusly fr all fur prbe inputs and is ended autmatically. Cnventinal water activity measurement (AwE): the measurement starts simultaneusly fr all fur prbe inputs. The HygrLab C1 autmatically detects full equilibrium cnditins and ends the measurement at that time. The HygrLab autmatically signals the end f each water activity measurement and ffers the ptin f autmatically capturing bth the end result and the value f temperature in 4 separate data bins (ne nnvlatile memry per prbe). Up t 500 recrds can be captured per prbe and each recrd is stamped fr date and time. Data viewing can be dne frm the keypad and the data can be saved t a PC using the Rtrnic HW4 sftware. Standard Mde: in this mde the HygrLab C1 can be used as a general purpse indicatr with the fllwing functins: Relative humidity and temperature data measured by up t 4 HygrClip 2 digital prbes Calculated humidity parameter such as dew / frst pint r ther, fr up t 4 HygrClip 2 prbes Up t 4 user defined calculatins such as the difference between the temperature and the dew pint measured by a prbe, the average f the temperature measured by tw prbes, etc. The HygrLab C1 is available with a wide assrtment f HygrClip 2 humidity-temperature prbes t meet almst any requirement. The HygrClip 2 prbes feature well prven, durable sensrs. Digital signal prcessing ensures cnsistent prduct perfrmance and als facilitates the task f field maintenance with features such as ptentimeter free digital calibratin. 2011; Rtrnic AG E-M-HyLabC1-V1_10

Hwever, sme f the settings and access t sme f the functins requires cnnecting the HygrLab C1 t a PC running the HW4 sftware versin 3.1 r higher, using either USB r Ethernet. Fr instructins see the fllwing HW4 manual: E-M- HW4v3-F2-019 2.2 Pwer supply The HygrLab C1 requires the pwer adapter mdel AC1211 (100 240 VAC 12 VDC, 200 ma). As an alternative, the HygrLab C1 can als be pwered via the USB prt (n pwer adapter - current draw: abut 70 ma). In this case, the Ethernet prt is inactive and cannt be used. 2.3 Prbe inputs The HygrLab C1 has 4 prbe inputs designed fr use with all HygrClip 2 digital prbes with the standard UART interface (see als Back panel and digital interface ptins). Pin-Out Diagram 1: RXD (UART- digital prbe) 2: GND (digital and pwer) 3: V+: 3.3 VDC nminal 4: Nt used 5: Nt used 6: Nt used 7: TXD (UART digital prbe) 2.4 Measured parameters The HygrClip 2 prbe measures relative humidity with a ROTRONIC Hygrmer IN1 capacitive sensr and temperature with a Pt100 RTD. 2.5 Calculated parameters The HygrLab C1 can calculate any f the fllwing parameters based n the humidity and temperature values measured by the prbe (t select the calculated parameter, use either the keypad r the HW4 sftware > Device Manager): Dew pint (Dp) abve and belw freezing Frst pint (Fp) belw freezing and dew pint abve freezing Wet bulb temperature (Tw) Enthalpy (H) Vapr cncentratin (Dv) Specific humidity (Q) Mixing rati by weight (R) Vapr cncentratin at saturatin (Dvs) Vapr partial pressure (E) Vapr saturatin pressure (Ew) 2011; Rtrnic AG E-M-HyLabC1-V1_10

A fixed barmetric pressure value can be specified using either the keypad r the ROTRONIC HW4 sftware. In additin, the HygrLab C1 can display fr each prbe input a user defined calculatin such as the difference between the temperature and the dew pint measured by a prbe, the average f the temperature measured by tw prbes, etc. Cnfiguratin f the HygrLab C1 fr a user defined calculatin requires the Rtrnic HW4 sftware versin 3.1 r higher (see separate dcument E-M-HW4v3-F2-019) 2.6 Alarm Indicatin n the display Depending n the type f alarm, the display shws either a symbl r a text when the HygrLab C1 detects an alarm cnditin: Out-f-limits value (defined with the HW4 sftware fr each prbe input, includes measured values and calculated parameter). Display f fixed values when n prbe is cnnected the input. Easily identified humidity and temperature values can be specified with the HW4 sftware fr each prbe input. Bad RH sensr r majr sensr failure (pen r shrted sensr humidity and temperature) 2.7 Real time clck The HygrLab C1 clck keeps track f the date and time and can be adjusted frm the keypad. Using the HW4 sftware, the clck can be synchrnized with the PC date and time. The clck des nt autmatically adjust fr daylight saving time (DST). 2.8 Back panel and digital interface As an ptin, the HygrLab C1 is available with any f the fllwing digital interfaces: USB nly (can be used t pwer the HygrLab C1) Ethernet nly (RJ45) USB and Ethernet (nly ne interface can be used at any time) Use f the Ethernet interface always requires the HygrLab t be pwered with the AC1211 pwer adapter. The backlight can als be disabled. Using the HygrLab C1 Menu > Display Settings > Mde, the display mde can be changed as shwn belw: Standard: 3-line display: %RH Temperature Date and time %RH Temperature Calculated parameter (see nte belw) N date and time The display can als be cnfigured t shw a trend indicatr n each line: : increasing value : decreasing value Bth arrws: stable In the event f an alarm the symbl [! ] appears t the right f the value. When the display is set t display humidity and temperature and prvided that the Aw mde is nt enabled, the bttm f the display shws the date and time. The prbe input that is currently selected is always shwn at the bttm f the display. NOTE: Using the HW4 sftware, each prbe input f the HygrLab C1 can be cnfigured t display a user defined calculatin instead f displaying a calculated psychrmetric parameter such as the dew pint. Fr example, the HygrLab C1 can be cnfigured t display the difference between the temperature f prbe 1 and the dew pint calculated fr prbe 1, whenever prbe 1 is selected. 2011; Rtrnic AG E-M-HyLabC1-V1_10

Press ENTER t activate the Sys menu item, use the UP r DOWN arrw key t change the unit system. Press ENTER t cnfirm and press MENU t exit. The HW4 sftware can als be used t change the unit system. WARNING: changing the unit system des nt change the numerical value f the fixed barmetric pressure used in sme psychrmetric calculatins. Always verify and mdify as required the numerical pressure value after changing the unit system. 3.5.2 Date and time Press the MENU key and select Time Settings > Date r Time. Press ENTER t activate either the Date r the Time menu item, use the UP r DOWN arrw key t change the Date r the Time. After each change, the cursr mves t the right. When dne, press ENTER t cnfirm and press MENU t exit. T change either the date r the time frmat, Press the MENU key and select Time Settings > Date Fmt r Time Fmt. Press ENTER t activate either the Date Fmt r the Time Fmt menu item, use the UP r DOWN arrw key t change the Date r the Time frmat. When dne, press ENTER t cnfirm and press MENU t exit. The HW4 sftware can als be used t set the clck f the HygrLab C1 t the PC date and time. 3.5.3 Select the calculated parameter fr a prbe input Press the MENU key and select Prbe Settings > Calc1 t Calc 4. Press ENTER t activate the Calc submenu, use the UP r DOWN arrw key t select the calculated parameter. Press ENTER t cnfirm and press MENU t exit. 3.5.4 Select which prbe and/r parameters are shwn n the display Press the MENU key and select Display Settings > Mde. See dcument E-M-TCPIP-Cnf available frm ur website. 3.7 Practical advice fr measuring humidity The mst cmmn surce f errr when measuring relative humidity is a difference between the temperature f the prbe and the temperature f the envirnment. At a humidity cnditin f 50 %RH, a temperature difference f 1 C (1.8 F) typically results in an errr f 3 %RH n relative humidity. It is always gd practice t mnitr the display fr temperature stability. The prbe shuld be given sufficient time t equilibrate with the envirnment t be measured. The larger the initial temperature difference between the prbe and the envirnment t be measured, the mre time temperature equilibratin requires. This time can be shrtened, and errrs avided, by using the prbe cnfiguratin that fits best fr yur applicatin. In extreme situatins, cndensatin may ccur n the sensrs when the prbe is clder than the envirnment. As lng as the humidity / temperature limits f the humidity sensr are nt exceeded, cndensatin des nt alter the calibratin f the sensr. Hwever, the sensr has t dry ut befre it can prvide a valid measurement. Nn-mving air is an excellent insulatr. When there is n air mvement, surprising differences in temperature and humidity can nted ver shrt distances. Air mvement at the prbe generally results in measurements that are bth faster and mre accurate. 4 Aw Measurement When enabled t measure water activity, the HygrLab C1 autmatically displays humidity as Aw (1.000 a w = 100 %RH) and ffers the fllwing ptins: AwE mde: the HygrLab C1 waits fr the full equilibratin f the measured prduct and prbe. Fr mst prducts, this takes frm 30 t 60 minutes. The HygrLab C1 autmatically detects equilibrium cnditins (humidity and temperature) and ends the measurement at that time by freezing the display. AwQuick mde: the HygrLab C1 uses an algrithm t accelerate the water activity measurement and prvides a result in typically 5 minutes. The measurement ends autmatically and the display is frzen. When temperature cnditins are stable (bth at the prduct and prbe), the value measured with the AwQuick mde is generally within ± 0.005 aw f the value that wuld be btained by waiting fr full equilibratin f the prduct and prbe. This indicates that the prbe is being pwered. If necessary, pwer the prbe by pressing nce n the red buttn lcated n tp f the prbe. When the red LED is nt lit, the HC2-AW prbe is nt pwered and the instrument is nt receiving a signal frm the prbe. 2) Measuring with less than 4 prbes: bth the AwQuick and AwE functins run simultaneusly fr all HygrLab C1 prbe inputs. We strngly recmmend t either discnnect r t pwer dwn any unused prbe. IMPORTANT: The measurement starts simultaneusly fr all prbe inputs (discnnect r pwer ff any unused prbe) Usually, the measurement ends at a different time fr each prbe. When using multiple prbes, the HygrLab C1 emits a shrt beep whenever a prbe is dne measuring. A lng beep indicates that the last prbe is dne. The measurement ends autmatically as sn as the prjected Aw value is stable. At that time, the HygrLab C1 freezes the display. The measurement is autmatically ended and typically requires abut 5 t 6 minutes. With the default dwell time f 4 minutes, the difference between the AwQuick functin and the cnventinal measurement methd is typically 0.005 aw r less. The value f the dwell time can be set by the user (see SETTINGS) and is a tradeff between speed f measurement and accuracy. Generally, a lnger dwell time prduces mre accurate results but causes measurements t take lnger. Press ENTER t cnfirm. Use the DOWN arrw key t select either Temp Adjust r Humi Adjust (we recmmend selecting Temp Adjust first). The fllwing steps are the same fr a temperature r a humidity adjustment. Press ENTER t cnfirm and pen the next sub-menu. Optinal: with the Shw Acquired Pints menu item selected press ENTER and review the calibratin pints present in memry. This submenu allws yu t delete unwanted calibratin pints. Press MENU when dne. Use the DOWN arrw key t select the Start Adjustment menu item and press ENTER t cnfirm. Press ENTER t activate the Adjust functin. After cmpleting the adjustment prcess, this functin autmatically erases the calibratin pints in the prbe memry.
