Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? november is Rotary Foundation MONTH President Scott Barks welcomed us to our meeting in the Petroleum Club bar. The window behind The Great Scott made his picture a bit dark, but it was very appropriate to remind everyone that BSR will be DARK on 11/22/10 for Thanksgiving. Continuing with the Thanksgiving theme, Pres Scott expressed gratitude for his family. Eric Bradshaw, Roger Allred, Jeannine Thompson and Dave Winegar agreed that faith, family and friends make life so much sweeter. We missed Najib Sufi again because he is still in Pakistan working on our BSR project. Frank Tripicchio was missed because he is in Italy caring for a family member. Pres Scott asked that we make plans to be at the annual Christmas luncheon, with a guest, on 12/6/10. Dave Winegar has made arrangements for The BHS Choir to return and serenade us. Dave also agreed to coordinate collection of Toys for Tots on 12/6 and 12/13 for the Marine Corps drive. The toys should cost approximately $10 each. The Great Scott next turned his attention to Chan Park, Chuck Doremus and Mike Kaia, for different reasons, of course. Chan Park celebrated his birthday with special attention to the fact that he was born in the Year of the Monkey. He hinted that is why he has so much energy. Chuck Doremus has much less energy but is getting better each day. He told us that it is Jim Dandy s fault that Chuck has been a Rotarian since1995. Mike Kaia plans to celebrate his 15th anniversary by doing what Judy tells him to do. Mike tells us that being fair and taking things easy helps in making a successful marriage.

Page 3 John Bacon gave a Rotary minute. He gave us an update on the Rotary International fight against polio. We are making progress and we can not give up now. Our scheduled speaker could not make it to the BSR meeting, so without much notice, Roger Allred invited his guest, Joe Coughlin, to speak about how he motivates employees. Joe is the owner/operator of Coconut Joes on California Avenue. He focuses on helping the kids that are his employees, to make the transition to adulthood. He emphasizes rewarding accomplishment. Most kids come out of high school ill prepared for life. Many have the wrong focus, taught to them by TV, that life is all about money. He teaches his employees through work, activities, one-onone attention, etc, that they should focus on faith, family, friends and fitness. He hires for personality and trains the rest. He doesn t need to advertize for employees because all of the current employees friends want to work at Coconut Joes. He has try-outs and his current employees hire the new employees. President Scott Barks expressed appreciation to Joe for such a fine program with such little notice.

This type of trust allows donors to reduce capital gains taxes on gifts of appreciated property and is a great strategy for incorporating charity into estate plans. It can be funded with cash, real estate, publicly traded stock, closely held stock, bonds (including tax-exempt bonds), and certain other assets. Karena Bierman, senior planned giving officer for The Rotary Foundation, says that, for U.S. residents who include the Foundation as a beneficiary of a charitable trust, a charitable remainder trust passes the "four-win" test: Donors can receive a tax deduction in the year the gift was made, avoid capital gains taxes on the donation of appreciated assets, receive lifetime income from the donation, and enjoy recognition for the gift that supports the Foundation while they are still alive. "Trust assets are invested right away to enable the Foundation to get the most out of the gift," Bierman says, "while the donor gets income and a tax benefit. That way it maximizes the benefit to both the donor and Rotary."
