THE MILL WHEEL Rotary Club of Mill Valley Founded June 7, 1926 Service Above Self December 18, 2018 Volume 92, Issue #25 http://millvalleyrotary.org District Web Site: www.rotary5150.org HOLIDAY LUNCHEON A tip of Santa s cap to organizer Roberta Keller and the staff at Piazza D Angelo restaurant in downtown Mill Valley. That was a wonderful way to get into the holiday mood as members of the Rotary Club of Mill Valley and their guests met and mingled at the club s traditional Holiday gathering. Our thanks to Nancy McKlveen, Margareth Tanner, Ed Marshall and Burnett Tregoning for the photos in this report.

THE MILL WHEEL DECEMBER 18, 2018 PAGE 2 HOLIDAY HONORS: Club President Bob Roberts presented awards to several members to recognize their service: PP Bob Canepa (bottom left) received a Gilded Globe in recognition for his years as president of the Mill Valley Rotary Service Fund. Bob has been a member of the club for 35 years, was president in 1991-92, and has attended Rotary meetings around the world while traveling as an unofficial club ambassador. Others receiving recognition included your editor (right); our fabulous Sergeants at Arms Peter Straube, Peter Mason and Howard Harker (bottom right); Past President Jane Hall (below) for her work with visiting youth; and Bill Lambrecht (shown left with wife and PDG Leah) who has served as International Service Chair for many years.

THE MILL WHEEL DECEMBER OCTOBER 30, 18, 2018 2018 PAGE 3 3 WELCOME OUR NEW PRESIDENT ELECT ELECT CARL LIPPENBERGER The Holiday Luncheon also serves as the club s official annual meeting at which the Nominating Committee presents its candidate to serve as club president in 2020-21 (the President Elect Elect). In the photos below Nominating Committee Chair Richard Rider congratulates Carl Lippenberger (who, by the way, was elected by an enthusiastic unanimous voice vote), and Santa assures Carl s wife Ginger that 2020-21 will be a fantastic year around the Lippenberger household.

THE MILL WHEEL DECEMBER 18, 2018 PAGE 4 TIS THE SEASON to be giving Two attendees made special financial contributions at today s meeting: Honorary Member Russ Burbank donated $250 to the club s Service fund, and Guest Matt Mathews, coowner of that fabulous new Mill Valley Lumber Yard, donated bell-ringers to both the Service Fund and The Rotary Foundation.

THE MILL WHEEL DECEMBER 18, 2018 PAGE 5 CLUB CALENDAR December 25: No Meeting. Merry Christmas! January 1: No Meeting. Happy New Year! January 8 (12:15): What a wonderful way to kick-off the new year. Our fellow Mill Valley Rotarian Dick Spotswood will be our speaker today. Dick, resident political pundit at the Marin IJ and a past president of Mill Valley Rotary, will give us the lowdown on the current local and national political scene. Bring a guest. You ll both learn something and have fun at the same time. January 15 (12:15): Gil Sanborn will address Russian Information Warfare. Today, actors such as Russia are using information tools in an attempt to undermine the legitimacy of democracies. Adversaries target media, political processes, financial networks, and personal data. Gil Sanborn, Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army for California, will discuss Russian perspective toward, and strategy and tactics against, the West and border nations and the use of Information Warfare as part of a strategy of Hybrid Warfare. January 22 (12:15): Mill Valley Rotarian Sue Royce will speak on Pioneers of Flight The First Powder Puff Derby in 1929. An accomplished aviatrix herself, Sue will discuss the history of women in air racing. She will begin with the 20 women who defied convention by taking to the skies and racing across the country in 1929 for the 1 st Women s National Air Derby. Sue will share her experience flying with her mother, Beth Fuhrman, in the last Powder Puff Derby and also the Angel Derby in 1978. She will finish up her presentation with the Air Race Classic (formerly the Powder Puff Derby) which she competed in last year in memory of her mother who passed away one month before the race. The guy who fell onto an upholstery machine last week is now fully recovered.
