Year 10 Design Project Folio Guide Title Page Your title page should contain the following information: Major Design Project Student name Teacher name A professional look and layout Contents Page Identify the five main sections o Identification of the need o Research & investigation o Concept sketches & final sketch o CAD drawings (scale templates) o Evaluation List all sub headings Include page numbers 3
Section 1 - Project Proposal Identification of the Need A clear statement of the overall need for the project or problem to be solved. Do not identify a solution, just outline a problem that needs to be solved (one paragraph). Section 2 - Project Development Research of common joints in plywood construction Create a table for your research of the following 4 common joints used in plywood construction. 1) Edge half-lap joint 2) Through mortise and tenon 3) Keyed (or wedged) mortise and tenon 4) Butt joint Your table should include the following information: Image, Main Advantages, Main Uses e.g.: Joint Type Image Advantages Main Uses Edge half-lap 4
Market Research of Existing Solutions Document all research carried out of existing or similar projects (5 in total, 3 supplied. 2 images of your own selection). You must include the following information on all 5 of your existing solutions. (A table, or dot points with the headings below the image is the best way to present this.) Name: Construction: (The type of joints being used) Positives: Negatives: Special features (where applicable): Reference: For example: Name Construction Positives Negatives Special features Reference Market Research Number 1 - Multi height organiser. Edge half-laps in the tallest section. Mortise and tenon in the lower. Lots of different compartments, at different heights which would allow for a lot of storage. Would be hard to make something with so many parts in the time allocated. The half-lap joints sit lower in the tallest box and don t extend to the top of the outside. www.thingiverse.com 5

Section 3 - Concept sketches & final sketch Idea Generation After your research is complete, generate as many of your own ideas as possible (minimum of 2 different designs). Each design must be drawn neatly on a new blank A4 page (or A3) Each design must include comments (positives and negatives) Idea Justification Select your best design and produce a final rendered sketch. Your sketch must be: Drawn in isometric projection on blank paper Rendered (shaded to show highlights, tonal graduation, shadows etc.) Justify your chosen idea by detailing the drawbacks of other ideas and advantages of the chosen idea (at least one paragraph). Section 4 - Scale Template (Sketchup) Produce a 2D scaled template of your project that includes: An A3 sized boarder. 420 x 297mm An individual template for all pieces. Import your Sketchup image into your design folio document when complete. Section 5 - Evaluation Include an image of your final plywood desk organiser and discuss the following points. Positives, Negatives & Interesting (PMI) Going Forward Outline in dot points or a paragraph the PMI s of your final product and how you might change or maintain them going forward. 7
