Samtec MODS-LJ Series (LIFEJACK ) Category 5/5e Qualification J. Ferry, C. Arroyo Copyright 2008 Samtec, Inc Page 1

Summary LIFEJACK met or exceeded TIA/EIA-568-B.2-2001 Category 5e requirements for Insertion Loss (IL), Near-End Crosstalk (NEXT), and Far- End Crosstalk (FEXT) when the proper capacitive compensation scheme was implemented. LIFEJACK also met TIA/EIA-568-A Category 5 requirements for Return Loss (RL). Copyright 2008 Samtec, Inc Page 2

Results Summary NEXT (db) @100MHz IL (db) @100MHz Pair Combination TST-35 TIA/EIA-568-B.2 (MIN) Pair TST-35 TIA/EIA-568-B.2 (MAX) 1-2, 3-6 -50.1-43.0 1-2 -0.1-0.4 1-2, 4-5 -50.8-43.0 3-6 -0.2-0.4 1-2, 7-8 -54.5-43.0 4-5 -0.1-0.4 3-6, 4-5 -43.8-43.0 7-8 -0.1-0.4 3-6, 7-8 -53.3-43.0 4-5, 7-8 -48.8-43.0 FEXT (db) @100MHz RL (db) @100MHz Pair Combination TST-35 TIA/EIA-568-B.2 (MIN) Pair TST-35 TIA/EIA-568-A (MIN) 1-2, 3-6 -52.0-35.1 1-2 -21.6-14.0 1-2, 4-5 -53.1-35.1 3-6 -16.7-14.0 1-2, 7-8 -61.0-35.1 4-5 -22.2-14.0 3-6, 4-5 -40.9-35.1 7-8 -21.6-14.0 3-6, 7-8 -47.2-35.1 4-5, 7-8 -54.7-35.1 Copyright 2008 Samtec, Inc Page 3

Product Overview Outer shell Inner body Contact frame Copyright 2008 Samtec, Inc Page 4

Replaceable contacts The design utilizes contacts loaded into a removable frame which interface with surface pads on the pcb. The main advantage of LIFEJACK over other designs is the easily removable and replaceable contact frame by way of the Samtec extraction tool. Copyright 2008 Samtec, Inc Page 5

Crosstalk Compensation Scheme The fundamental idea behind crosstalk compensation is to introduce a capacitive coupling effect between the differential pairs to enhance the crosstalk rejection performance. The technique used on pcb TST-35 is controlled routing and spacing of the pcb traces to create the capacitive coupling effect. Compensation scheme Copyright 2008 Samtec, Inc Page 6

Test Fixture Overview - Reference Test Plug The reference test plug was created with a Tyco Electronics 8-position modular jack (p/n 5-569278- 3) and 3 unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) wire which is Category 5e verified. The results in Table 1 show that the reference test plug met or exceeded the TIA/EIA-568-B.2 requirements.
