Cut (1) 16 ½ x WOF strip; recut into (2) 2 ½ x 16 ½ Y strips. Cut (7) 2 ½ x WOF strips for border. 21272-EA - Cream texture Cut (9) 1 ½ x WOF strips; recut into (80) 1 ½ x 2 ½ A rectangles and (96) 1 ½ D squares. Cut (7) 2 ½ x WOF strips; recut into (8) 2 ½ x 8 ½ F strips, (50) 2 ½ G squares, and (14) 2 ½ x 4 ½ I rectangles. Cut (2) 2 x WOF strips; recut into (32) 2 Q squares. Cut (6) 2 ½ x WOF strips; recut into (4) 2 ½ x 24 ½ T2 strips and (8) 2 ½ x 16 ½ T1 strips. Cut (12) 1 ½ x WOF strips for borders. 3. Repeat step 2 with the marked B2, B3, and B4 squares to make 16 each B2, B3, and B4 side units. 4. To complete one red Mini Star block, sew a B1 side unit to opposite sides of a C1 square. Press seams toward the square. Stitch a D square to each end of two B1 side units. Press seams toward the D squares. Join the pieced rows to complete (1) 4 ½ x 4 ½ red Mini Star block. Press seams toward the center row. Repeat to make 8 blocks total. Set aside 4 blocks for the Star & Bars blocks. 5. To complete (4) 4 ½ x 4 ½ red/blue Mini Star blocks, repeat step 4 using B2 side units and C2 squares. 22390-N - Boy Scout print Cut (2) 86 x WOF pieces for backing. Mini Star Blocks: Note: Use a ¼ seam allowance throughout. 6. To complete (4) 4 ½ x 4 ½ blue Mini Star blocks, repeat step 4 using B3 side units and C3 squares. 1. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of 64 B1 squares and the B2, B3, and B4 squares. Note: Mark half of the B1 and B3 squares from top left to lower right and the remaining half from top right to lower left. 2. Place a marked B1 square right sides together on one end of an A rectangle. Stitch on the line. Trim seam allowance to ¼. Press the B1 corner to the right side. Repeat on the remaining end of the A rectangle to complete one B1 side unit. Repeat to make 32 B1 side units total. 7. To complete (4) 4 ½ x 4 ½ gold/blue Mini Star blocks, repeat step 4 using B4 side units and C4 squares. 3
Star & Bars Blocks: 1. Sew an E rectangle to the top and bottom of 4 red Mini Star blocks. Press seams toward the E rectangles. Add an F strip to the long sides to complete (4) 8 ½ x 8 4. Sew a C1 side unit to opposite sides of the cream Mini Star blocks. Press seams toward the C1 side units. Stitch a G square to each end of the remaining C1 side units. Press seams toward the C1 side units. Join the pieced rows to complete (2) 8 ½ x 8 ½ Double Star blocks. Press seams away from the center rows. ½ Star & Bars blocks. Press seams toward the F strips. Double Star Blocks: 1. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the 16 remaining D squares and (16) C1 squares. Note: Mark half of the red word print C1 squares from top left to lower right and the remaining half from top right to lower left. Take care to keep the print upright in the finished blocks. 2. Make (2) 4 ½ x 4 ½ cream Mini Star blocks using H1 and H2 rectangles, the marked D squares, and B1 and G squares referring to the Mini Star Blocks instructions. Center, Corner, Side, and Border Star Blocks: Note: Be careful to keep the red and blue word print pieces upright in the finished blocks throughout this section. 1. Sew a G square to an L square to make a GL unit. Press seam toward the L square. Repeat to make 12 GL units total. 2. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each J and Q square. 3. Using marked J squares and the GL units, make 6 stripe side units and 6 reversed side units referring to step 2 of Mini Star Blocks. 3. Using the marked C1 squares and I rectangles, make (8) C1 side units referring to step 2 of Mini Star Blocks. 4. Complete (6) I side units, (4) M1 side units, (2) M2 side units, (2) N1 side units, and (2) N2 side units using marked J squares and I, M1, M2, N1, and N2 rectangles. Make 16 P side units using marked Q squares and P rectangles. 4
5. To complete the Center Star block, sew an I side unit to opposite sides of a K square. Press seams toward K. Stitch a G square to each end of (2) I side units. Press seams toward the G squares. Join the rows to complete the 8 ½ x 8 ½ block. Press seams toward the center row. 8. To complete the Side Star blocks, sew an M1 side unit to one side and an I side unit to the opposite side of a K square. Press seams toward the K square. Sew a G square to the stripe end and a C1 unit to the remaining end of a stripe unit and a reversed side unit. Press seams toward the squares. Join the rows to complete the 8 ½ x 8 ½ Side Star block. Press seams toward the center row. Repeat to complete the 8 ½ x 8 ½ Reversed Side Star block, paying careful attention to the positioning of the stripe side unit and reversed stripe side unit. 6. To complete the Red Corner Star blocks, sew a stripe side unit and an M1 side unit to opposite sides of a K square. Press seams toward the K square. Sew a C1 square to each end of an M2 side unit. Press seams toward the C1 squares. Sew a G square to the stripe end and a C1 square to the opposite end of a reversed stripe side unit. Press seams toward the squares. Join the rows to complete the 8 ½ x 8 ½ Red Corner Star block. Press seams toward the center row. Repeat to complete the 8 ½ x 8 ½ Reversed Red Corner Star block, paying careful attention to the positioning of the stripe side unit and reversed stripe side unit. 9. Repeat step 5 to complete (4) 6 ½ x 6 ½ Border Star blocks, using P side units and O and R squares. Snowball Blocks: 7. Repeat step 6 to complete the 8 ½ x 8 ½ Blue Corner Star block and Reversed Blue Corner Star block using N1 and N2 side units and C3 squares. 1. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the 16 remaining G squares. 2. Place a marked G square, right sides together, on each corner of an S square. Stitch on the marked lines. Trim seam allowances to ¼. Press the G corners to the right side to complete (1) 8 ½ x 8 ½ Snowball block. Repeat to make 4 blocks total. 5
Quilt Assembly: Note: Refer to the Quilt Center Diagram throughout steps 1 10. Refer to the cover quilt drawing to add the borders. 1. Join one of each Mini Star block to make a star block unit. Press seams to one side. Repeat to make 4 star block units total. 2. Sew a Double Star block between 2 star block units to make row 1. Press seams toward the Double Star block. Repeat to make row 5. 3. Stitch a Snowball block between 2 Star & Bars blocks to make row 2. Press seams toward the Star & Bars blocks. Repeat to make row 4. 4. Sew the Center Star block between 2 Snowball blocks to make row 3. Press seams toward the Center Star block. 5. Join the rows to complete the 24 ½ x 40 ½ quilt center. Press seams in one direction. 6. Make 2 blue side strips by sewing a T1 strip to a U1 strip to a T1 strip to an X strip. Press seams toward the T1 strips. Repeat to make 2 red side strips using Y strips instead of X strips. 7. Stitch a blue side strip to the top and a red side strip to the bottom of the Side Star block to make the left border strip. Press seams toward the side strips. Sew a red side strip to the top and a blue side strip to the bottom of the Reversed Side Star block to make the right border strip. Press seams toward the side strips. Stitch the pieced strips to the long sides of the quilt center. Press seams toward the pieced strips. While all possible care has been taken to ensure the accuracy of this pattern, we are not responsible for printing errors or the way in which individual work varies. 6 8. Sew a V strip to the right end of one W strip to make the top WV strip and to the left end of the remaining W strip to make the bottom VW strip. Press seams toward the W strips. 9. Make the top pieced strip by stitching a T2 strip to a U2 strip to a T2 strip to the top WV strip. Press seams toward the T2 strips. Repeat to make the bottom pieced strip using the bottom VW strip. 10. Sew the Blue Corner Star block to the left end and the Red Corner Star block to the right end of the top pieced strip. Press seams toward the top pieced strip. Stitch the Reversed Red Corner Star block to the left end and the Reversed Blue Corner Star block to the right end of the bottom pieced strip. Press seams toward the bottom pieced strip. Sew the strips to the top and bottom of the quilt center. Press seams toward the strips. 11. Join the 1 ½ gray texture strips on the short ends to make a long strip. Press seams to one side. Cut into (2) 56 ½ strips and (2) 42 ½ strips. Sew the longer strips to the long sides of the quilt center and the shorter strips to the top and bottom. Press seams toward the strips. 12. Join the 1 ½ cream texture strips on the short ends to make a long strip. Press seams to one side. Cut into (2) 58 ½, (2) 44 ½, (2) 72 ½, and (2) 58 ½ strips. Sew the 58 ½ strips to the long sides and the 44 ½ strips to the top and bottom. Press seams toward the strips. 13. Sew the 6 ½ x 60 ½ Boy Scout print strips to the long sides of the quilt center. Join the 6 ½ x remaining WOF strips on the short ends to make a long strip. Press seams to one side. Cut into (2) 44 ½ strips. Sew a Border Star block to each end of the strips. Press seams toward the strips. Stitch the strips to the top and bottom. Press seams toward the strips. 14. Sew the 72 ½ cream texture strips to the long sides and the 58 ½ strips to the top and bottom. Press seams toward the strips. 15. Join the 2 ½ red/blue stripe strips on the short ends to make a long strip. Press seams to one side. Cut into (2) 74 ½ strips and (2) 62 ½ strips. Sew the longer strips to the long sides and the shorter strips to the top and bottom to complete the quilt top. Press seams toward the strips. 16. Remove the selvage edges from the backing pieces. Join the pieces on a long edge with a ½ seam allowance. Press seam open. Trim the side edges to make a 70 x 86 backing piece. 17. Layer, quilt, and bind, using your favorite methods and the blue word print binding strips, to complete the quilt. Not for Resale/Summer 2012
