GeoEye-1 Stereo Satellite Imagery Presented by Karl Kliparchuk, M.Sc., GISP kkliparchuk@mcelhanney.com 604-683-8521 All satellite imagery are copyright GeoEye Corp GeoEye-1

About GeoEye Corp Headquarters: Dulles, Virginia Employees: 375+ Imagery from diverse platforms IKONOS (launched 1999) OrbView-2 / 3 GeoEye-1 (launched Sept 2008) Obama Inauguration

Why / When to Use GeoEye-1 Imagery? Quick image acquisition Remote areas Can acquire when aircraft are not available Safety for surveyors or other staff Stereo imaging ability to produce topographic maps Large area coverage in one image

GeoEye-1 Satellite Agility Customized collection ability Multiple point target collection, long strips or large area collections of ANY orientation Same Pass Stereo collections to ensure consistent lighting and environmental conditions Stereo is used to create DEMs and for 3D feature extraction (adds height to vertical features) 350,000 square kilometers daily worldwide in pan plus colour mode

Example Project Using Stereo Satellite Imagery in BC IKONOS

Example Project on Vancouver Island Acquire stereoscopic IKONOS (81cm) satellite imagery, and load into a softcopy photogrammetric workstation, Project for BC Ministry of Forests and Range The imagery is analyzed and interpreted in 3D (stereo). Methods derived from this approach can be used by the for ongoing inventories of landslides (and possibly other resource features such as MPB attack sites). Tested topographic map production

Example Project on Vancouver Island Helicopter reconnaissance Two trips for ground truthing (Sept 2006 and March 2007) Checked 15 different locations throughout the study area.

Preparation of image pairs for stereo viewing Aerotriangulation of IKONOS for additional positional accuracy.

Analysis of images for forest cover

Digitized Spot Heights and Breaklines Tested for map production in a heavily forested area Accurate to 1:20,000 TRIM mapping 20m contours

Digitize landslide features 15m spacing plus breaklines.

Calculate landslide feature volume The value calculated is 368,419.29 cubic metres. If the pre-slide area had a drainage channel then the actual volume would be less than our calculated volume.

McElhanney is a distributor for: IKONOS (81cm pixel, stereo available) GeoEye-1 (50cm pixel, stereo available) SPOT (2.5-10m pixel, stereo available) TerraSAR-X (1.8 3-18m pixel, RADAR, InSAR available) And can additionally order and offer to clients: Quickbird Worldview ASTER Landsat RapidEye MODIS Radarsat

Thank You! Any Questions?
