1. Prcess Cntrl and ClrCheck Onyx ClrCheck Reference Guide Prcess cntrl invlves setting up prcesses in a print envirnment t ensure that printing (and finishing) is perfrmed cnsistently and crrectly The ClrCheck tls in RIP-Queue nly prvide ne part needed t assess and implement prcess cntrl within a printing envirnment. Prcess cntrl requires a mindset f excellence and understanding by everyne invlved in the printing prcess. As such, prcess cntrl in a print envirnment invlves: Maintenance f Equipment Maintaining a stable printing envirnment Prper prfiling and calibratin printers Quality cntrl f media and inks Ensuring that printed utput is crrect Regular evaluatin f printed results Lts f details (like prcesses, frms, and checklists)... 1.1. Maintenance f Equipment Equipment must be maintained t ensure that printing is dne cnsistently. Questins t cnsider when setting up prcess cntrls related t equipment maintenance may include: What is being dne t ensure equipment is wrking crrectly (nzzle checks, self diagnstics, repairs, etc.)? Are finishing devices (laminatrs, calendars, heat presses) maintained and perated cnsistently? What is the maintenance schedule fr the equipment (daily, weekly, etc.)? Are clr measurement devices prperly calibrated, maintained, and serviced? 1.2. Maintaining a stable printing envirnment The physical envirnment where printing is perfrmed and where materials are stred can dramatically impact the final printed utput. Questins t cnsider when setting up prcess cntrls related t the printing material strage envirnment may include: Are physical cnditins cnsistent? Hw is temperature and humidity cntrlled? What factrs f air quality are maintained (dust, fumes, air flw, etc. )? Hw stable are the print mdes being used? Page 5

1.3. Prper prfiling and calibratin f printers Prperly setting up and maintaining clr management fr the printers, media, ink cnfiguratins, and print mdes is essential t getting cnsistent and predicable utput. Questins t cnsider when setting up prcess cntrls related t prper prfiling and calibratin f printers may include: Was the printer in a stable printing cnditin when prfiling was perfrmed? Has calibratin been perfrmed? Is the clr device used fr prfiling/calibratin prperly maintained and used? Has prfiling been crrectly perfrmed fr the printer, media, inks, ink cnfiguratin and print mde? Is the printer printing the same as when prfile was perfrmed? When is re-calibratin perfrmed? What prcess are put in place when things change (ie media r ink)? 1.4. Quality cntrl f media and inks Ensuring cnsistency in the media, ink and materials used fr image reprductin is essential fr getting cnsistent and predictable utput. Questins t cnsider when setting up prcess cntrls related t quality cntrl f media and inks may include: Hw is stability f inks in printers maintained? Hw des the media and ink change ver time? What is the age f media r ink being used? Are yu using the same media and ink, and are they cnsistent with the prfiles that yu are using? What prcesses are in place t ensure that media is cnsistent when replaced/restcked? What prcesses are in place t ensure that ink is cnsistent when replaced/restcked? If ther materials are used what prcesses are in place t ensure that they are cnsistent when replaced/restcked? 1.5. Ensuring that printed utput is crrect G7, Standards Simulatin, and Print Gamut Verificatin ClrCheck verificatin tls prvides a means f determining that printing is perfrmed crrectly after prfiling is perfrmed. This ensures that a standard level f utput quality is achieved. 1.6. Regular evaluatin f printed results After standards and a level f quality has been established then regular reassessment using the Baseline ClrCheck verificatin tl prvides a means f evaluate hw cnsistently printing is being perfrmed. The Baseline tl can als be use t assess hw similar utput is frm multiple printers that share the same prfiles. Page 6

1.7. ClrCheck verificatin prcesses Onyx ClrCheck Reference Guide In the cases when ClrCheck verificatin fails then an evaluatin will be needed t determine what parts f the printing prcess/envirnment are invlved and put crrective measures in place. The prcesses used t d this shuld becme part f the prcess cntrl system put in place fr a printing envirnment. Page 7

2. Quick and easy ClrCheck Onyx ClrCheck Reference Guide Yu dn't necessarily need any special clr management training t test the cnsistency r accuracy f yur printed utput. We have included several ClrCheck swatches ut f the bx t help yu get started. Fr this example, we will use the ONYX Weekly Baseline swatch. 2.1. Start Print ClrCheck dialg Once RIP-Queue is nline, click n the g t the ClrCheck tab, and click the <Print ClrCheck...> buttn. Figure 2.1 - ClrChek Tab 2.2. Print Swatch Select the clr device yu want t use, then select the ONYX Weekly Baseline swatch as well as the print mde and quickset t use and click Print. (Nte: Printing a ClrCheck swatch verrides varius settings f a Quick Set including media and mde if they are explicitly set by the Quick Set). Figure 2.2 - Print ClrCheck Swatch Dialg Page 8

2.3. Measure Swatch After yu print the swatch, the jb will switch t a "Waiting T Measure" state. Select the jb in the queue and then click the Measure Swatch icn n the tp left t measure the swatch. Figure 2.3 - ClrCheck Jb in Queue with Measure tl enabled 2.4. View Reprt After the swatch is read in, yu will be presented with yur first ClrCheck Baseline reprt. All the delta E values will be zer because yur initial measurements are the baseline fr future Baseline tests. The next time yu print and read a Baseline swatch it will be validated against these initial measurements. Figure 2.4 - Verificatin Results reprt after measurement After the Verificatin Results reprt is clsed and measurements are cmpleted the ClrCheck Swatch jb will be mved t the Buffered queue area with the status f the jb set t reflect the status f the swatch verificatin. The swatch verificatin reprt can als be viewed by selecting the jb and viewing the jb prperties. Page 9

Figure 2.5 - Verificatin reprt frm Jb Prperties Onyx ClrCheck Reference Guide 2.5. Wrking with HTML Reprts A save as dialg is displayed after pressing the <Reprt > buttn frm either the pst measurement Verificatin Results dialg r the Jb Prperties dialg. By default ClrCheck HTML reprts are placed in the PCT\Reprts flder using the swatch name and the time and date. Figure 2.6 - Create HTML reprt dialg After the HTML reprt file is saved the default brwser is then used t display the reprt. Several key interactins are pssible. Page 10

Figure 2.7 - View f HTML ClrCheck reprt frm Chrme brwser The patches can be hidden by pressing the Hide buttn. The clumns with up/dwn arrws in the Patches table can be srted by clicking n the clumn header. Nte: Clicking twice n thee00 clumn will srt the clr differences frm largest t smallest. This is a quick and simple way t determine prblem areas. Page 11

The current state f the reprt in the brwser can be printed using the brwsers print functinality. (Nte: The printed reprt will reflect f the patches hidden r srted state). Frm Chrme this is dne by pressing the three dts in the upper right and selecting <Print >. Figure 2.8 - Printing ClrCheck HTML reprt with patches hidden 2.6. Wrking with Swatch Measurements Measurements f swatch patches can be directly viewed r exprted frm the <View Measurements > buttn at the bttm f the Verificatin Results r Jb Prperties dialg. If the Page 12

dwn arrw next t the buttn is pressed a menu f View Measurements r Exprt Measurements is shwn and can be selected. Figure 2.9 - View Measurements... A CGATS file can be exprted using the Exprt Measurements and then entering a filename and lcatin t save the exprted measurements. Figure 2.10 - Exprt Measurements... Page 13

3. Setting up and using ClrCheck Onyx ClrCheck Reference Guide When setting up ClrCheck ne shuld first cnsider what they want t be able t evaluate and then cnfigure ClrCheck swatch definitins that can be used n a regular basis. Are yu evaluating clr cnsistency r clr accuracy? Are yu simulating a print standard r simply maximizing the capabilities f yur printer? Care needs t be made when setting up fr evaluatin f standards simulatin as Input prfiles in Quick Sets need t be cnfigured t agree with the standards characterizatin data sets used. ClrCheck validatin may fail as a result f clr management cnsideratins nt being taken int accunt. The fllwing use cases prvide setup and usage. 3.1. Using Baseline ClrCheck acrss multiple printers (f same mdel) When as baseline swatch is printed and measured the swatch cnfiguratin and measurements are persisted as part f a print mde s prfile data in the printer repsitry. Therefre a baseline s swatch cnfiguratin and measurements are saved as part f the print mde definitin when either a Printer Install Library (PrnInst) file r an Onyx Media Library (OML) file is created. Additinally, encapsulated mde specific baseline swatch cnfiguratins and measurements are imprted as part f either installing a printer r imprting an OML. This allws ClrCheck baseline checking t be used t ensure that printing is perfrmed the same fr multiple printers that can use the same media and print mdes. This is accmplished using the fllwing steps. 3.1.1. Create/imprt a media and print mde Use media manager t create and prfile a media and print mde. Alternatively ne can imprt a media that desn t have baseline measurements. 3.1.2. Print and measure a baseline swatch fr ne r mre print mdes fr a media Fllw the steps in Sectin 2 t print and measure a baseline swatch fr the media and print mde set up in Sectin 3.1.1. (Nte: it may be desirable t first create (r cpy and mdify) a baseline swatch that will be used t determine that printers are printing the same). (Nte: This may be repeated fr multiple print mdes). Generally it is a gd idea t print and measure a baseline after creating a prfiling a print mde. 3.1.3. Exprt media cntaining ne r mre baselines The mde specific baseline swatch cnfiguratins and measurements are saved as part f exprting a media. This can be dne in three ways. The first is t create a PrnInst frm the File>Manage Printers dialg in Rip-Queue. The secnd is by exprting medias as an OML file using the <Exprt > buttn n the Media Tab f the Cnfigure Printer dialg in Rip-Queue. The third is by using the <Exprt > buttn after selecting a media in the Media Library sectin f Media Manager. Page 14

3.1.4. Install Printer r Imprt media cntaining baseline Either install a new printer using the PrnInst, r imprt t an alternate printer frm the OML created in Sectin 3.1.3. 3.1.5. Select the installed/imprted media in Rip-Queue Make the printer in the Rip-Queue be the active printer where the media was installed in Sectin 3.1.4 by selecting the printer at the tp f the Rip-Queue windw. Then select the media t be the active media fr the printer. 3.1.6. Print an imprted baseline swatch Select the ClrCheck tab in the printer setup panel n left side f Rip-Queue windw and press <Print ClrCheck > t bring up the Print ClrCheck dialg. Select the mde specific baseline swatch (with <mde> at end f the swatch name). Select the clr device t measure with and the quickset, and then print the swatch. 3.1.7. Measure the swatch and get reprt Once the swatch has been printed select the jb, measure swatch, and view reprt as defined in Sectin 2. 3.2. Print mde relative named clr reprtting Bth the PANTONE Cated Reprt and PANTONE Uncated Reprt swatches use PANTONE prvided measurement data t determine clr differences used in the reprts. When mde specific device ink values fr printing PANTONE clrs are defined, the device values are applied t the printing f the swatch, and clr differences are made relative t the PANTONE prvided measurement data. Named clr reprting can be cnfigured fr clr difference cmparisns t be made relative t clr measurements fr the desired device ink replacements. This can easily be dne by: First, making a cpy f the Reprt swatch definitin. Secnd, editing the cpied swatch definitin, and clicking n the <Optins > buttn. Third, turn n the Cmpare with print mde defined clrs (when set) check bx Pres <OK> n the dialgs t save the changes Use the updated swatch definitin t print and generate a reprt. Named clr reprts using this cpy will use the clrimetry f the replaced ink values (based n the default ICC prfile assciated with the print mde fr reprting clr difference metrics. Nte: Print mdes created using HP PANTONE Emulatin define device ink replacements fr all PANTONE clrs and print mde relative named clr reprts will shw small clr differences (since they cmparisn in relative t the device ink replacements created fr the print mde). Page 15

3.3. Other cases Walkthrughs prvide a basic guide fr setting up and using ClrCheck Further cnfiguratin can be fund in Sectin 5. Page 16

4. ClrCheck Overview 4.1. Intrductin Onyx ClrCheck Reference Guide The ClrCheck cnfiguratin manager can be used t create, manage and print ClrCheck swatches. Three types f ClrCheck swatches are pssible: T determine clr cnsistency (Baseline) T determine clr accuracy (G7 Master, Standards Simulatin, and Print Mde Verificatin) Infrmatinal (Custm Image and Named Clr Evaluatin) After either a clr cnsistency r clr accuracy swatch is printed the jb will remain in the queue waiting t be measured with a clr measurement device. Once it is measured then verificatin testing is perfrmed, and the ClrCheck verificatin status fr the print mde is updated. When ClrCheck swatch definitins are created they can be cnfigured with an expiratin time that will flag the print peratr when it is time t reprint and measure the ClrCheck swatch. ClrCheck verificatin is fr infrmatinal purpses nly. Having invalid, expired r nn-existing ClrCheck verificatin will nt prevent jbs frm being printed. 4.2. Baseline Envirnment The baseline swatch envirnment allws fr a set f custm clr patches t be defined alng with user defined ClrCheck validatin tests t be perfrmed n subsets f the patches. The first time that a baseline swatch is printed and measured fr a print mde, the measurements f the patches will be cached as part f the media repsitry t establish the baseline fr any future ClrCheck validatin using that print mde. Figure 4.1 - Example settings fr Baseline envirnment ClrCheck baseline measurements and swatches are tracked n an individual mde basis. Baselines therefre need t be established fr each print mde independently. Thus, they are exprted and imprted as part f exprting and imprting a media. This allws fr baseline measurements t be shared between printers that use the same print mdes t determine hw cnsistently they are printing t ne anther. Page 17

Nte: When a new baseline is desired then the Baseline Measurements fr a swatch can be remved frm the Media Library view f the print mde in Media Manager. ClrCheck validatin using baseline swatches can nly be used t assess clr cnsistency because baseline swatch validatin prefrmed against previus measurements frm previus prints f the swatch using the same print mde. Other ClrCheck envirnments shuld be used t check fr clr accuracy. 4.3. G7 Master Envirnment The G7 Master swatch envirnment allws fr evaluatin f calibratin and reprductin f CMYK grayscales relative t G7 grayscale methdlgy advcated by IDEAIlliance. The premise f G7 calibratin is based n the cncept f using a Neutral Print Density Curve t define tne scale with clrimetric balancing f grayscale fr grayscale cmbinatins f CMY. Figure 4.2 - Example settings fr G7 envirnment The G7 Master envirnment has 3 swatch types that crrespnd t G7 Grayscale, Targeted, and Clrspace requirements. The swatches and tests invlved with the G7 Master envirnment evaluate varius aspects f clr reprductin accuracy in the fllwing ways: 4.3.1. G7 Grayscale The G7 Grayscale evaluatin swatches evaluate hw well the calibratin, G7 crrectin, r clr management settings achieve NPDC tne scale and gray balance fr printing CMYK utput. When ICC prfiles are nt used then this evaluates hw well the media mdel fr calibratin r the G7 clr crrectin in media manager achieve G7 NPDC grayscale aims fr CMYK printing. When ICC prfiles are used then it prvides an evaluatin f bth the G7 applicability f the input prfile being used alng with the clr accuracy f the print mde s utput prfile. G7 Grayscale is likely the best chice t use fr the purpses f assessing bth accuracy and precisin withut the use f ICC clr management. It des require that the print mde is created in Media Manager with G7 calibratin / crrectin put in place. Page 18

4.3.2. G7 Targeted The G7 Targeted evaluatin swatches evaluate hw accurately CMYK primaries and secndaries (slid tw clr cmbinatins) f a reference printing cnditin are simulated in additin t assessing clr management settings used t achieve NPDC tne scale and gray balance fr printing CMYK utput. As mst digital printers have inks with different clr characteristics frm cnventinal press reference printing cnditins, G7 targeted swatches shuld be printed using ICC clr management, and the Input prfile defined in the Quick Set needs t be cnsistent with the reference printing cnditins assciated with the chsen swatch that is printed. Nte 1: Care needs t be made when using G7 targeted evaluatin swatches as invalid prfile cnfiguratin can lead t failure f ClrCheck verificatin. Nte 2: G7 Targeted evaluatin assess hw accurately the print gamut f the input prfile is simulated by the prfile assciated with the print mde. Evaluating accuracy f simulatin is nt necessarily the same as evaluating accuracy f the utput prfile as clrs inside the gamut f the print mde s prfile may nt be inside the gamut f the input prfile. 4.3.3. G7 Clrspace The G7 Clrspace evaluatin swatches evaluate hw accurately varius printed CMYK values simulate the results f a reference printing cnditin in additin t assessing clr management settings used t achieve NPDC tne scale and gray balance fr printing CMYK utput. As mst digital printers have inks with different clr characteristics frm cnventinal press reference printing cnditins, G7 Clrspace swatches shuld be printed using ICC clr management, and the Input prfile defined in the Quick Set needs t be cnsistent with the reference printing cnditins assciated with the chsen swatch that is printed. Nte 1: Care needs t be made when using G7 Clrspace evaluatin swatches as invalid prfile cnfiguratin can lead t failure f ClrCheck verificatin. Nte 2: G7 Clrspace evaluatin assesses hw accurately the print gamut f the input prfile is simulated by the prfile assciated with the print mde. Evaluating accuracy f simulatin is nt necessarily the same as evaluating accuracy f the utput prfile as clrs inside the gamut f the print mde s prfile may nt be inside the gamut f the input prfile. 4.4. Standards Simulatin Envirnment The Standards Simulatin Evaluatin swatches evaluate hw accurately varius printed CMYK values simulate the results f a reference printing cnditin. Page 19

Figure 4.3 - Example settings fr Standards Simulatin envirment Optins fr printing Standards Simulatin swatches allw fr varius tests relative t different internatinal and published standards t be applied relative t hw accurately CMYK values are printed. As mst digital printers have inks with different clr characteristics frm cnventinal press reference printing cnditins, Standards Simulatin swatches shuld be printed using ICC clr management, and the Input prfile defined in the Quick Set shuld t be cnsistent with the reference printing cnditins assciated with the chsen swatch that is printed. Nte 1: Care needs t be made when using Standards Simulatin Evaluatin swatches as invalid prfile cnfiguratin can lead t failure f ClrCheck verificatin. Nte 2: Standards Simulatin evaluatin assesses hw accurately the print gamut f the input prfile is simulated by the prfile assciated with the print mde. Evaluating accuracy f simulatin is nt necessarily the same as evaluating accuracy f the utput prfile as clrs inside the gamut f the print mde s prfile may nt be inside the gamut f the input prfile. 4.5. Print Gamut Verificatin Envirnment Print Gamut Verificatin evaluatin swatches evaluate hw accurately the prfile fr the print mde reprduce clrs that are knwn t be inside the print gamut f the print mde. This is accmplished by dynamically determining clrs inside the print gamut and then using the utput prfile t print thse clrs. Page 20

Figure 4.4 - Example settings fr Print Gamut Verificatin envirnment As such Print Gamut Verificatin des nt use the input prfile assciated with the Quick Set, and therefre desn t check whether clr management settings are apprpriate fr simulatin r any ther purpses. It is used t determine whether the print mde prfile characterizes hw the printer actually prints. Nte: Print gamut verificatin can be used t determine if the printer prfile is the cause f ClrCheck validatin errrs simulatin based ClrCheck verificatin. 4.6. Named Clr Evaluatin Envirnment Named Clr Evaluatin swatches allw fr sets f clrimetric r named custm clr patches t be defined t assess hw well a print mde is able t reprduce the clr sets. These clrs are reprduced using the same clr management used when they are printed as part f PDF/EPS/PS dcuments. Figure 4.5 - Example settings fr Named Clr Evaluatin envirnment After measurement the swatch reprt will shw hw clse each f the patches can be printed with verall clr difference statistics. Page 21

5. ClrCheck Cnfiguratin Onyx ClrCheck Reference Guide 5.1. Intrductin The ClrCheck cnfiguratin manager can be used t create, edit/view, delete, print and exprt/imprt ClrCheck swatches. Figure - Main UI t cnfigure ClrCheck It is intended fr the prductin manager t created pre-defined swatches that are t be used in prcess cntrl peratins in a print shp. With pre-defined swatches created, the print peratr nly has t select frm the pre-defined list. Yu cnfigure ClrCheck swatches by clicking the "Cnfigure ClrCheck" icn n the RIP-Queue tlbar. The main UI f Cnfigure ClrCheck includes Printing Setup, ClrCheck swatches, and several peratins (create, edit/view, delete, print, exprt, and imprt). Yu can setup printing infrmatin (Printer, Media, and Mde) by clicking the gear. Three ClrCheck swatches are predefined (ONYX Weekly Baseline and Named Clr Evaluatin f PANTONE Cated and PANTONE Uncated). Other ClrCheck swatches yu define will als be listed here. The Hide ClrCheck tab when selected will prevent the ClrCheck tab frm appearing in the print cntrl area in Rip-Queue. 5.2. Operatins within the Cnfigure ClrCheck dialg 5.2.1. New... This peratin is t add a ClrCheck swatch. The printing setup is listed at the tp fr reference. Page 23

Figure 5.1 - Main UI fr peratin New... Onyx ClrCheck Reference Guide Yu first add the swatch name and select the Quick Set t be assciated with this swatch. Then yu can select frm ne f the ClrCheck envirnments t create a swatch definitin fr. 5.2.1.1. Add a Baseline swatch: The baseline swatch envirnment allws fr a set f custm clr patches t be defined alng with user-defined ClrCheck validatin tests t be perfrmed n subsets f the patches. Yu can add a new Baseline swatch by chsing Baseline in Select ClrCheck envirnment. Figure 5.2 - Main UI t add a new Baseline swatch By clicking Optins..., yu can chse t use abslute values r media-based substrate crrected values t verify measurement. Figure 5.3 - Optins fr Baseline swatch Page 24

Nte: When media-based substrate crrectin is selected, the expected values are adjusted based n the measured media clrs. By checking Verificatin Expiratin, yu can setup expiratin ntificatin time fr a ClrCheck swatch. The Patches tab lists the custmized clr patches that yu want t print and measure n a rutine basis. Each patch has a Patch ID, Patch Type, and Clr Data. Nt all patches in a swatch need t be defined using the same clr space (Patch Type) which can be a named clr (Pantne), Lab, K, RGB, r varius prcess ink clr selectins like CMYK, CMYKR, etc. A clr transfrmatin is perfrmed (as needed) t cnvert each patch t the clr space used by the print mde. If the clr space matches the clr space f the print mde then n transfrmatin is perfrmed. Yu can add, edit, delete, r imprt clr patches by clicking crrespnding buttns in the Patches tab. T add a single patch click the buttn Add.. buttn. Nte: Yu can add different patches by specifying patch type, such as Named clr (Pantne), Lab, K, RGB, and different device clrs (CMYK, CMYKR, etc.). Clr transfrmatin may be needed t print a patch. Fr example, yu want t print a RGB patch r CMYKR patch using a CMYK printer. When yu want edit a patch in the Patches tab, yu just select the patch and click the buttn Edit... The UI t edit a patch is the same as t add ne. Figure 5.4 Add patch fr Baseline swatch Tip: One quick way t set up a swatch with a lt f patches is t imprt patch definitins frm an already existing swatch. When the imprt buttn is pressed it will imprt patches frm SWADEF files. If the drp dwn next t the Imprt... buttn is used then the type f patches and swatch definitin file t imprt frm can be selected. Patches can be imprted frm CGATS files (CMYK, RGB, LAB) r SWADEF files Page 25

Figure 5.5 Imprt patches fr Baseline swatch Onyx ClrCheck Reference Guide When yu imprt swatches yu will be asked t find a file that yu wish t imprt patches frm. Useful places t get previusly defined patch definitins are as fllws: Swatches that are defined using the ClrCheck Cnfiguratin dialg are placed in the "Onyx\PCT\SwatchDefs" flder. CGATS files fr the standard definitin files can be fund in the "Onyx\PCT\Standards Simulatin" flder. CGATS files fr G7 can be fund in the "Onyx\PCT\G7 Master flder" Patch identifiers are preserved when patches are imprted frm an existing swatch. Slight changes t the patch identifiers may be made t ensure that each patch identifier is unique. The Test tab lists the set f tests n clr patches in the Patches tab t perfrm after measurement f the swatch during the prcess f swatch validatin. Figure 5.6 Add test fr Baseline swatch All the tests in the list need t succeed in rder fr the swatch being defined t pass validatin. Yu can add, edit, r delete tests by clicking crrespnding buttns in the Test tab. A test is a cmparisn peratin that is perfrmed n ne r mre patches frm the patches tab. A test succeeds if the cmparisn is less than r equal t the threshld assciated with the test. Page 26

Yu can add a test t be perfrmed during swatch validatin by clicking the Add.. buttn. Each test has a minimum threshld (value and precisin) that must be achieved fr cnfrmance purpses n subset f patches. Threshlds are used t establish acceptability f printed utput taking int cnsideratin a number f different factrs including (but nt limited t): Nticeability f clr difference Variability in the printing prcess Variability in the measurement prcess The fllwing tests can be used t cmpare measurements f patches in a swatch t previus baseline measurements fr purpses f validatin: Mean DeltaE - used t determine whether the average clr difference (defined using CIEDE2000) is belw a given threshld. In general a DeltaE f less than 2.0 is nt physically discernable Max DeltaE - used t define the limit fr the wrst case clr difference fr the grup f patches assciated with the test. This value shuld generally be larger than a threshld fr a Mean DeltaE Max DeltaE shuld be used t specify the threshld fr a single clr patch PTile DeltaE - a PTile r (Percentile) DeltaE is used t define the limit fr a percentage f the patches assciated with the test that have a clr difference less than r equal t the threshld. When PTile DeltaE is used yu are als prmpted fr the percentage f the patches t use. Tip: Using 95% is equivalent t saying "fr the mst part" r (95% f the time) the maximum clr difference is less than r equal t the threshld. Nte: Generally PTile DeltaE is better t use than Max DeltaE with a large number f patches. Mean DeltaH / Max DeltaH - used t t determine the average / maximum hue variatin (independent f lightness and chrma differences). Max DeltaH is smething that is generally used against single ink clr slids t determine stability/acceptability f the ink. Page 27

Mean DeltaC / Max DeltaC - used t determine the average / maximum clr shift independent f differences in lightness. Generally used t asses the neutrality f near neutral clrs. Mean DeltaL / Max DeltaL - used t determine the average / maximum shift in lightness. When a test is created yu select the patches that yu want t perate n and prvide a name fr the grup f patches (like "Slids" r "Custmer Clrs"). Tip: The filter prvides a cnvenient mechanism t quickly find clrs that have specific values fr inclusin in the grup f patches t assciate with a test Fr instance typing in 100 fr the filter shws all the patches that have at least ne ink channel that have 100% ink. Yu can easily select r deselect all patches by clicking buttns Select All r Deselect All when yu want t select the subsets f patches. This is useful fr determining hw well G7 calibratin is accmplished by the clr management prfiles selected in the quick set. Failure may be due t incrrect input prfile selectin (which desn't achieve G7 aims) r by a failure f the printer prfile t get accurate results fr the assciated print mde. Nte 2: When yu uncheck this ptin, the CMYK values in the selected swatch are directly printed withut applying ICC prfiles frm the Quick Set. This is useful fr evaluating G7 crrectin steps applied during prfiling in Media Manager. Yu can chse t use abslute values r media-based substrate crrected values t verify measurement. Page 29

Nte: When media-based substrate crrectin is selected, the expected values are adjusted based n the white pint f the assciated utput prfile. The selectin t use Native CMY tlerance allws fr balance f 300% ink cverage fr print mde specific variatins t be accunted fr. This is especially imprtant when a print mde has a significant different clr fr a 300% CMY than fr ffset printing. The final tlerance selectin selects the tlerances t use fr G7 Clrspace assessment. Offset print tlerances are fr day t day printing and prf tlerances are fr assessing G7 fr prfing. By checking <Only display data sets cmpatible with swatch Quick Set>, G7 characterizatin data sets cmpatible with the selected Quick Set are listed with a green check mark next t it. Otherwise, all the G7 characterizatin data sets are listed with green check icn fr thse cmpatible, and red crss icn fr thse nt cmpatible. Crrespnding labels are als displayed with different clrs depending n if yu select a cmpatible r incmpatible data set. When enabling (checking) Reprt Only (N Verify), yu will nly get a reprt fr this G7 swatch and the ClrCheck mde verificatin status will nt be updated. With Verificatin Expiratin yu can setup a time-ut perid befre the G7 ClrCheck swatch is re-printed and re-measured t ensure that printing with the mde is being dne crrectly. 5.2.1.3. Add a Standards Simulatin swatch: Tip: The use f Standards Simulatin generally relies n clr management input prfiles t be set up in the Quick Set that is applied when swatches are printed. Befre creating Standard Simulatin swatches in ClrCheck cnfiguratin it may be advisable t first create Quick Sets fr each printer with a cmmn name that has the apprpriate input prfile assciated with printing cnditin that will be used by default fr the created Standards Simulatin Swatch. The Standards Simulatin Evaluatin swatches evaluate hw accurately varius printed CMYK values simulate the results f a cmmn reference printing cnditins, such as IDEAlliance r FOGRA. Page 30

Yu can chse t use abslute values r prfile-based substrate crrected values t verify measurement. Nte: When prfile-based substrate crrectin is selected, the expected values are adjusted based n the white pint f the assciated utput prfile. The verificatin tlerance level allws ne t select frm either an ISO based testing standard r a tlerance level fr Large Frmat Printing based n the FgraSpec SystemCheck criteria. Cntract Prf (ISO 12647-7:2016) / Cntract Prf (ISO 12647-7:2013): will mstly be used at the end f the creative wrk in the prductin chain. It shws the cnsistency f the data by giving the appearance t be expected when the printer prints accrding t the printing cnditin fr which the data has been separated. Validatin Print ISO 12647-8): is used primarily in the creative prcess and reflects a high quality validatin f the prpsed jb cntent. Therefre, a "Validatin Print" is a defined with reprducible quality within the creative phase and nt primarily a clr reliable reference fr the final prductin run. 5.2.1.4. Add a Print Gamut Verificatin swatch: Print Gamut Verificatin evaluates hw accurately print mde reprduces clrs that are knwn t be inside the gamut f the print mde. Figure 5.11 - Add Print Gamut Verificatin swatch The prcess and ptins fr adding a new Print Gamut Verificatin swatch is similar t the G7 swatch and Standard Simulatin swatch except f different verificatin tlerance level ptins. Page 32

Figure 5.12 - Optins f Print Gamut Verificatin swatch Onyx ClrCheck Reference Guide Three levels are defined (Level A, Level B, and Level C). These three levels have the same tests: mean clr difference f all patches, 95th percentile f all patches, maximum clr difference f all patches, mean chrma difference f gray patches, and maximum chrma difference f gray patches. Hwever, the tlerance is difference. Level A has mst restrictive tlerance and Level C has the least restrictive. 5.2.1.5. Tip: Anther media may need t be used, r test using prfile-based substrate crrectin The print mde's ICC gamut is capable f simulating a standard but the print mde's ICC is nt accurate enugh t crrectly reprduce in-gamut clrs. This might be because the printer is nt the same as when the print mde was prfiled Check t make sure yu are using the crrect prfiles fr the print mde yu are using Was the print mde crrectly prfiled fr the media and ink yu are using? Yu can run Baseline t check clr cnsistency f yur printer (assuming baseline exists fr print mde based n prfiled results) If Baseline fails, yu need t check if the printer hardware is having prblems (drpped nzzles, misalignments, etc.) r if the envirnmental factrs surrunding the printer are nt cnducive t getting cnsistent result Ensure the printer is regularly serviced and is prperly cleaned and aligned Printing envirnment (i.e. ambient temperature and humidity) shuld be kept as cnsistent as pssible Caused by pr accuracy f prfile fr print mde Page 43

Yu can run Print Gamut Verificatin t check hw accurately the print mde reprduces clrs that are knwn t be inside the gamut f the print mde If Print Gamut Verificatin fails, yu may need t recalibrate yur printer, r reprfile yur printer, r use AccuBst t get a mre accurate prfile.
