EXTERNAL CLADDING SOLUTIONS Timber cladding provides an attractive, lasting and durable finish for both internal and external applications.

SIBERIAN LARCH (SIBERICA) International Timber procures slow grown Larch wood from Siberia which is available with FSC certification.

Larch wood is a very strong robust wood with moderate durability and is resistant to rot and fungal attack, making it ideal for outdoor use.

It requires no preservative treatment, and will weather to a silver grey with U.V exposure over a period of one to two years in areas with low air pollution.

This gives Larch a better resistance to impact compared with Western Red Cedar.

Larch is rated as Class 3, moderately durable, and if the sapwood is excluded can be used untreated for cladding.

To avoid discolouration of the wood use only corrosion resistant fixings such as those made from aluminium, hot dipped galvanised steel or stainless steel.

Western Red Cedar is naturally resistant to decay and insect attack.

1 EXTERNAL CLADDING SOLUTIONS Timber cladding provides an attractive, lasting and durable finish for both internal and external applications. However, the best performance benefits of the timbers we offer are only achieved through an understanding of product selection in conjunction with appropriate design principles. SIBERIAN LARCH (SIBERICA) International Timber procures slow grown Larch wood from Siberia which is available with FSC certification. The product is consequently denser, straight grained and contains less knots, than Larch sourced in alternative countries in Europe. Larch wood is a very strong robust wood with moderate durability and is resistant to rot and fungal attack, making it ideal for outdoor use. The timber is pleasing to the eye with warm colours: golden brown varying to yellow and orange in heartwood. Due to its high density, Larch wood maintains high wear resistance and is non corrosive. It requires no preservative treatment, and will weather to a silver grey with U.V exposure over a period of one to two years in areas with low air pollution. Technical information on Siberian Larch The density of Larch is between 470kg/m 3 and 650 kg/m 3 at 12% moisture content. This gives Larch a better resistance to impact compared with Western Red Cedar. Dimensional Stability Larch exhibits minimal movement in a cladding application, however if sapwood is present the timber can be more susceptible to movement. Larch is rated as Class 3, moderately durable, and if the sapwood is excluded can be used untreated for cladding. However if sapwood is present the timber requires treatment with an external preservative. European Larch has a rating (λ10) of approximately 0.13 W/(mK). To avoid discolouration of the wood use only corrosion resistant fixings such as those made from aluminium, hot dipped galvanised steel or stainless steel. WESTERN RED CEDAR (THUJA PLICATA) This species is an ideal material for use as exterior or interior cladding and is available with CSA & FSC certification. Western Red Cedar is naturally resistant to decay and insect attack. It simply seasons if left uncoated to an attractive silver grey appearance over a period of approximately eighteen months in areas with low air pollution. Cedar offers superior acoustic qualities too, helping to reduce noise or confine it to specific areas. It is also an excellent material for thermal insulation in summer keeping the building cool and in winter preventing the heat from escaping. Technical information on Western Red Cedar Cedar is one of the lightest commercially available softwoods. It has a low density of kg/m 3, making it an easy wood to transport, handle and erect on-site. Dimensional Stability It has a very low shrinkage factor. It is the most resistant of all coniferous species to warping, twisting and checking. Its durability is rated as Class 2 durable, it can therefore be used untreated if the sapwood is excluded. It conforms to BS 8417, giving it a 60 year service life for the untreated wood if sapwood is excluded. It is highly resistant to decay and insect attack due to naturally occurring fungicidal compounds in the wood. Western Red Cedar, if left unfinished will bleach to a particularly attractive lustrous silver grey. However we recommend that it is not advisable to use this species in locations where there is a high level of pollution unless treated with a surface coating. Its low density and high proportion of air spaces, makes Cedar the best thermal insulator of all the commonly available softwood species. It is far superior to brick, concrete and steel, helping to keep buildings cool in summer and reduce heating costs in winter. To avoid discolouration of the wood use only corrosion resistant fixings such as those made from aluminium, hot dipped galvanised or stainless steel. Nails and screws should be one third longer for cedar than those normally used to fasten hardwood species. THERMOWOOD REDWOOD International Timber sources this material from Finland. It is available with PEFC certification. Thermowood is produced by heat treating selected Scandinavian Pine (Pinus sylvestris) which changes the properties of the timber and turns a non durable timber into a product with class 2 durability (BN EN 350). This thermal process enhances the chemical and physical properties of the timber providing many benefits which include greater stability, no toxic chemicals or additives, colour darkens to an attractive deep brown, timber can be cut or trimmed without the need to treat the cut ends. Thermowood will weather over a period of time to a silver grey appearance in areas with low air pollution. Technical information on International Timber Clear & Red Pine Clear Pine Stellac Thermowood s density is kg/m 3 when its moisture content is 6%. Natural variation will occur between individual boards. It is also both light and easy to work with but can be brittle and care should be taken during storage and installation to avoid any unnecessary exertion of stresses. International Timber Stellac Thermowood Red Pine has a slightly higher density than International Timber Stellac Thermowood Clear Pine. Dimensional Stability Clear Pine and Red Pine Stellac Thermowood has on average 40% greater stability than untreated softwood, suffering less shrinkage, swelling, and distortion due to atmospheric changes. THERMOWOOD CLEAR PINE This product offers an alternative solution to Cedar; it is produced from the finest quality Radiata Pine sourced from Chile, which is virtually clear of knots. It comes with PEFC certification and a fully independent audited energy and carbon trail which gives the product carbon neutral certification. The thermal process enhances the physical properties of timber improving durability to class 2 (BN EN 350) and provides a superior finish with a beautiful lustrous dark brown appearance. Clear Pine and Red Pine Stellac Thermowood has improved durability when used in above ground applications as the treatment process destroys the rot-causing hemicelluloses which nourish fungi and bacteria. It also has high resistance to most decay fungi. Whilst it does not resist the biological growth of algae on its surface, this aesthetically unpleasant but non-damaging occurrence can be avoided by treatment. When compared with normal kiln-dried softwoods its thermal conductivity is reduced by 20-25%, making it an ideal timber for external cladding application with a λ10 in the region of W/(mK). Whilst nail holding strength values for wire and improved nails are consistent with the values for European Redwood, screw holding strength is reduced by approximately 20% due to the altered state of the cell wall during the thermal modification process. Accoya timber is an excellent choice for long-life low maintenance cladding as well as being ideal for the manufacture of windows, doors and conservatories. Accoya is produced using a patented process that adapts sustainably grown softwoods by increasing the amount of acetyl molecules present in the wood. Since acetyl molecules are already present in all wood species, the process does not introduce any artificial preservative and therefore the product is non toxic. Accoya comes with a 60 year minimum service life and a 50 year warranty against rot. EUROPEAN REDWOOD (PINUS SYLVESTRIS) This species offers the most cost effective solution for timber cladding. International Timber procures from selected mills located in Scandinavia, that can provide slow-grown, high quality timber which is PEFC or FSC certified. When used in external cladding applications, European Redwood (pinus sylvestris) is supplied with the option of treatment with Protim Clear Choice or AC 500 as the untreated timbers are non-durable for external applications. EUROPEAN OAK (QUERCUS PETRAEA) This durable species is ideal for external cladding applications, however if used uncoated there will be a medium amount of movement, so care should be taken during installation to allow for such movement in both the thickness and width of the board. International Timber sources both PEFC and FSC certified European Oak. If left uncoated, European Oak like all timbers will gently weather and bleach over time to a silver grey appearance in locations with low air pollution. Oak contains tannin which will exude from the wood, particularly if unseasoned, during the initial weathering process. Stainless steel or other non-ferrous fixings should be used or discolouration may occur. RED LOURO (OCTOEA RUBRA MEZ) This species originates from the forests of South America and its appearance is a light reddish brown with a golden sheen. It is available with FSC certification. This timber s main advantage in cladding applications is its reaction to weathering. When left uncoated and exposed to the elements there is very little loss of surface smoothness and little surface checking or warping. It also resists the absorption of moisture surpassing teak in this respect. Technical information on European Redwood European Redwood has average density of 510 Kg/m 3. Dimensional stability When compared to alternative species used for timber cladding, it displays higher movement when installed. To reduce the risk of movement we recommend European Redwood to be surfaced coated. It is rated as Class 4, slightly durable and should be impregnated with preservative when used for cladding. European Redwood has a rating (λ10) of approximately 0.13 W/(mK). Standard wire nails can be used but annular ring-shank nails are preferred for their improved holding power. Small head or siding nails are suitable. Pneumatically-driven virtually headless pins are not recommended for fixing cladding boards. AMERICAN WHITE OAK (QUERCUS ALBA) This en vogue light coloured hardwood is very poplar for internal joinery work. Sourced from North American mills, the timber is kiln-dried to a low moisture content (8-10%) and is therefore only recommended for interior cladding unless conditioned to a suitable moisture content prior to installation. White Oak is available with FSC certification and is available pre machined planed tongue and groove with a V profile (PTGV) for immediate delivery nationwide. American White Oak AMERICAN WHITE ASH (FRAXINUS AMERICANA) Ash has excellent finishing qualities, rendering it ideal for the application of coatings with a high resistance to shock. A non-durable light coloured hardwood that is only suitable for interior use. It is also available with FSC certification ex stock pre machined planed tongue and groove with a V profile (PTGV) for immediate delivery nationwide. American White Ash 18 19
