Carbide Applications and Grades Most tooling suppliers only offer one grade of carbide regardless of the customer s application. There are dozens of woodworking carbide grades on the market.

That s why we ve teamed up with Tigra Hartstoff of Germany, a leader in carbide for the woodworking industry who believes in offering the optimum carbide for each application.

The most common, and most similar to the general use inserts on the market, is grade T04F in most cases. However, we encourage you to choose a more specific carbide for your particular application.

1 Carbide Applications and Grades Most tooling suppliers only offer one grade of carbide regardless of the customer s application. There are dozens of woodworking carbide grades on the market. Each manufacturer experiments with different binders and grain sizes and each has an opinion what works best in what application. At Cogent Tooling we believe in giving the customer options. That s why we ve teamed up with Tigra Hartstoff of Germany, a leader in carbide for the woodworking industry who believes in offering the optimum carbide for each application. In the guide to the right, you will find information on the various Tigra carbide grades. In nearly every instance in this catalog section, we offer you a choice of carbides. The most common, and most similar to the general use inserts on the market, is grade T04F in most cases. However, we encourage you to choose a more specific carbide for your particular application. Choosing the correct carbide may show little improvement over the standard grade, yet, in some cases you may find extraordinary results. With the hourly cost of up-time on today s modern equipment, saving even one machine stoppage over the course of a year can pay off the few pennies extra for the correct grade of insert. Don t sell yourself short! If you need assistance in choosing the correct carbide grade for your application, do not hesitate to call. 70

7 Tigra SuperPac y The most economical system for corrugated back cutterheads. Ideal for use in MDF moldings or long-term production in hardwoods. System consists of a corrugated carbide blank and a corrugated steel backer. Backer is profiled once for the life of the set, and the carbide knife can be indexed outward and reground many times over its lifetime. Additional benefits: Choice of more ideal carbide grades than are available in carbide-tipped knife stock for longer run-times in difficult materials. Secure system allows for use in today s high-speed molders with rpms to 12,000 (if the cutterhead is rated to 12,000 rpm).
