3 Step 1 Parts & Tools Getting Started First, make sure you have all the parts and tools required to install your shades. ALL THE HARDWARE YOU LL NEED: SPECIALTY STANDARD ARCH SUPPORT Pencil, screw-driver, ¼ nut driver, level, and a drill with a 1 16 drill bit. WALL MOUNTING INSTALL CLIP Then find wooden studs where you ll want to attach the brackets; if you need to mount your shades to wallboard or plaster, use a secure fastener designed for hollow wall applications. For metal surfaces, pre-drill holes and use the included screws. For concrete, stone, brick, or tile surfaces, use a masonry drill and appropriate plugs, anchors, or screws. 4 Step 2 Bracket Installation Step 3 Headrail Installation Standard Brackets Using the installation bracket as a template, measure to the center of the bracket and mark the hole locations with RAIL Standard Brackets Hold the shade up near the brackets and insert the front clip of the bracket into the front groove of the rail. a pencil for drilling. Center the rail in the window opening. Mount brackets 3" from each side and any remaining brackets evenly. Make sure that all brackets are aligned and level. For the best fit on a non-perfect half circle in a deeply recessed window opening, position the brackets so that the arch is installed close to the original depth that the template was made. 3" Shade Width No. of Brackets 3" RAIL BUMPER Push the rail back and down until the back clips of the bracket are inserted in the back groove of the rail. Sidemount Brackets (mounting over a rectangular shade) Partially remove the cordlock from the rectangular shade. Slide the bracket onto the rail. Replace the cordlock. UP 40" " 72" " and UP 4 SIDEMOUNT If the shade is over 48" slide a modified bracket onto the center of the rail. Remove both endcaps from the archtop shade. Slide the archtop rail onto the brackets on the headrail of the rectangular shade. SHADE (Center bracket must not move off center) Side Mount Brackets Line up the bracket top with the joint where the archtop meets the top of the (A) ENDCAP Remove the endcap from the opposite end of the rectangular shade headrail. Replace the endcaps on the archtop shade. Hook one bracket onto the screw in the window frame using the keyhole slot. Bring the other end bracket over the screw at the other side of the frame. Slide down, flexing the bracket inward, until the screw engages in the keyhole slot. Make sure both brackets are slipped all the way in the keyhole slots. Install a screw in the bottom hole of each bracket and tighten the screws in the keyhole slots. 5 smithandnoble.com
5 Step 4 Top Block Installation 1-String Shades Mark the Top Block Position Place a mark at the top center of the window opening. (A) Attach the Top Block Align the groove of the top block with the center mark. Ensure the front of the top block is aligned with the front of the shade. (B) NOTE: Do NOT position the top block so that the screw hole is centered. Ensure that the screw hole is 3 8" off center. Attach the Top Block with the screw (inside mounts) or nut and bolt (outside mounts) provided. Before ALIGN tightening THE it all the SO way, loop the shade cord into the top block groove so that the top half of the Joiner Ball is coming out of the front of the top block. Mark the Top Block Position String Place a mark at the top center of the window opening. Measure the distance between the two cords coming out of the top cell of the shade (the upper cords). The distance was determined by the amount of curvature in the arch. At the top of the arch opening make marks to the left and right of the middle mark that correspond to the distance each cord is left and right of center. 6 Step 5 Installing the Joiner Ball Step 6 Adjusting and Operating the Joiner Ball Install Joiner Ball Adjust and Operate Because each arch is custom made, XTENSIONslight adjustments may need to be made CKET to position the joiner ball. Excess cord has been left for that purpose. DO NOT cut excess cord until you are completely D satisfied with the operation of the shade. Screw the two halves of the Joiner Ball together and test the shade operation. ATION T 1. The shade should go all the way up to M the top block. 2. The shade should go all the way down to the stack position. CORD TO METAL HALVES CORD TO BOTTOM EXCESS CORD BROUGHT BACK OUT HOLD IN PLASTIC WASHER If the shade goes all the way up and all the way down, but will not stay up without holding the cord. Move the bottom half of the Joiner Ball down (shorten lower cord) approximately 3/4". Test the operation and adjust again if necessary. If the shade operates with too much tension. Move the bottom half of the Joiner Ball up to lengthen the bottom cord The shade should be able to stay in position in between and move without excess tension. If the shade will not go all the way up, but has correct tension. Move both halves of the Joiner Ball up to shorten the upper cord and lengthen the lower cord. 1 UP ALL THE WAY If the shade will not go all the way down, but has correct tension. 7 Step 6 Adjusting and Operating the Joiner Ball Operating the Shade To Raise & Lower Shade If a 2-String shade does not appear level or has a gap on one side. Adjust one or both of the cords coming into the top half of the Joiner Ball. NOTE: Once the shade has been adjusted properly and the shade goes all the way up and down, the excess cord can be trimmed near the upper and lower holes of the joiner ball. CORD TO METAL HALVES CORD TO BOTTOM EXCESS CORD BROUGHT BACK OUT HOLD IN PLASTIC WASHER Move the Joiner Ball up and down to raise, lower and position the shade. Shades with Monofilament Guides Or, use the 6 ft. or 12 ft. Expandable Pole (optional) with forked end to push/pull the ball. For shades with Monofilament Guides, the line needs to be STRAIGHT when the screw is tightened all the way. The EXPANDABLE POLE screw will be secured to the window opening. Wrap the Monofilament Lines clockwise around the screw, when the screw Removing the Shade point is 1 2" from the top frame. Then screw into the frame so that the line is taut. 8 Troubleshooting Care & Cleaning and Safety PROBLEM CAUSE SOLUTION 1. The shade will not go up. Joiner Ball position is not set correctly Reposition the Joiner Ball. See Step 4 for Instructions. Care & Cleaning Occasional light vacuuming with a soft bristle attachment or gentle feather dusting is all that is required to keep your blinds looking fresh and neat. 2. The shade will not go down. Joiner Ball position is not set correctly Reposition the Joiner Ball. See Step 4 for Instructions. Safety First. Style Second To None 3. The shade will not stay up. 4. The shade is difficult to operate. Joiner Ball is not set correctly with enough cord tension. Joiner Ball position is not set correctly with too much cord tension. Reposition the Joiner Ball. See Step 4 for Instructions. Reposition the Joiner Ball. See Step 4 for Instructions. Great style should never come at the cost of safety. To protect young children and pets, there s no better way to eliminate risk than to use one of our cordless products. 5. There is a gap on one side of the shade. Control cord is not straight and plumb Check the position of the bottom rail and Top Block. The bottom rail must be centered in the window opening. Make sure that the Top Block is installed so that the groove is centered over the eyelet in the bottom rail. The screw should NOT be placed at center. The screw is to be 3 8" off center.
