REGISTRATION PACKAGE April 3 rd to April 6 th 2008 Our conference theme this year is Built by hand our inheritance, our legacy. This is a time for the Best Builders in the world to gather and explore the evolving log and timber building industry; a time to share ideas and solutions; a time to develop new skills. This year we have prepared a program of seminars and presentations that highlight the next generation of builders and customers. The workshops concentrate on new techniques and skills focused on the latter and give participants the opportunity to try new techniques. Pre-conference workshops will provide you with hands-on training, networking time and ample opportunity to foster new industry growth. Your conference team is excited to announce that we have secured well known Wood Sculpture, Artist, and Lecturer, Toshio Odate as our Keynote Speaker and as a guest facilitator for a workshop during conference. Toshio has over 50 years of woodworking experience and has taken part in many woodworking workshops, conferences and shows. His teaching experience in Sculpture and Traditional Japanese Woodworking includes such institutes as the Pratt Institute, the Brooklyn Museum Art School and Cooper Union in New York, NY. Toshio has also been featured in such programs as Martha Stewart Living, CBS, and has been featured in many publications and magazines showcasing his talents. We have some new facilitators coming on board and are bringing back many of your favorite facilitators from previous conferences. We look forward to seeing you at conference this year and promise to make it a memorable experience for you.

PRE-CONFERENCE Three courses to choose from! DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION IS MARCH 15 TH 2008 CHAINSAW CARVING Beginner to Advanced Pre-conference With Mike McVay and Susan Miller Everyone knows what chainsaw carving is. For years it was represented by scruffy rustics carving splintery bears at fairs or in vacant lots. It was a curiosity, whose appeal was the speed with which a person wielding a power saw could produce a product rather than the carving itself. It was more performance art than fine art, more race than sculpture: noisy, messy and the result was best left outdoors among the flowers and grass, and was certainly nothing you'd want to bring into the house. All that changed with the arrival of small saws and special carving bars which allowed woodcarvers to do detailed work on a scale much larger than anything they could accomplish with a hammer and chisel. Affordable small electric tools like die-grinders, angle grinders, and orbital sanders with a huge variety of accessories simplified the detail-carving and finishing process. What remained were the noise, exhaust, and hazard of a gasoline-powered chainsaw used for the initial carving. It is still an outdoor activity. Enter the new electric chainsaw; small, light-weight, fairly quiet and easy to start. Its drawback was the lack of speed and a tendency to overheat, but being able to use it indoors was a tradeoff to standing outside in the rain. Also, it can be taken up on a scaffold or ladder and used to carve a log-end that was already in place. The rustic has been somewhat gentrified and log house ornamentation is becoming much more common, returning as it were, to its Scandinavian roots. For the Montana Conference we will be offering two levels of carving workshops: The beginner workshop will focus on figures carved into the ends of logs. We'll cover grain and stress in the log and follow up with the design and layout of two popular figures the bear head and the eagle head. We'll scale them to fit the log, make patterns, then carve and finish them using power tools (including chainsaw, die grinder, angle grinder, and orbital sander. If you have these tools, bring them along). The intermediate - advanced class will be divided into teams for the construction of patio furniture: a "tiki bar" with a variety of furniture pieces such as bar stools, benches and tables. This should result in some interesting and spirited work. The allotted 3 1/2 days should give everyone a good grasp of the skills and plenty of ideas for carvings to complete at home. As well, I expect we'll open the heart of an artist or two in the process. This workshop starts March 31 st (8:00 am Monday morning and runs through to Thursday noon. Your fee includes box lunches for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.) Cost to attend is $ USD/CDN or foreign equivalent.

Timber Frame Design with Google Sketchup / Timber Frame Layout and Cutting / Integrating Round and Square With Clark Bremer and Egils Artmanis Clark Bremer and Egils Artmanis are the presenters of this three and ½ day, hands-on pre-conference workshop that will introduce you to Sketch-up, have you creating useable drawings, then taking the drawings and applying them to Timber Frame Layout and building. The project you will be working on is one of the winning designs from the Silver Park Bench Shelter Design Contest. Google Sketchup is a 3D drawing program available free from Google. It s a great tool for modeling timber frame designs in 3D, and you can't beat that price! You can create simple drawings where timbers are represented as simple rectangular solids. This is often all you need to demonstrate to your clients what their frame will look like. But Sketchup is capable of doing much more. You can actually make a highly detailed model that includes all of your joinery design. You can then create accurate shop drawings for laying out timbers in your shop. Workshop Overview Clark will begin by teaching the basics of Sketchup to build a simple timber frame model from scratch. We will then discuss how to customize Sketchup for timber framing using Ruby plugins (developed by the instructor). Each student will install them on his/her computer.

Finally, we will go through a detailed example of how to create a timber frame model that can be used for creating shop drawings. The following broad points will be covered: Timber Component Libraries. Discuss and demonstrate the use of component libraries to quickly assemble a frame from pre-defined timber components. Joinery Libraries. Discuss and demonstrate how to create new timber components using pre-defined joinery components, which are used to expand the timber component library. Joinery Creation. Discuss and demonstrate how to create new joinery components for expanding the joinery library. Shop Drawings. Discuss and demonstrate how to create precise, four-sided shop drawings automatically. We will then polish them off with dimensions, and shop notes. With drawings completed, Clark and Egils will take participants through a series of steps for completing the layout for both timber and log components. Finishing off the workshop, participants will work with the tools of the trade to fabricate the pieces to plan specifications. Participants will leave the seminar with a list of resources, including: - Where to find general tutorials for using Sketchup - Where to get the latest timber frame ruby scripts - Where to get joinery and timber libraries - Where to share their timber and joinery components with the rest of us - Detailed steps for completing layout - Hands on fabricating experience What to Bring: This is a hands-on practical workshop. Bring: Laptop computer Safety Gear This workshop starts March 31 st (8:00 am Monday morning and runs through to Thursday noon. Your fee includes box lunches for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Cost to attend is $ USD/CDN or foreign equivalent.

SEMINARS AND WORKSHOPS Main Conference Preservation and Repair of Log Buildings With David Rogers Log buildings require assistance as time marches on. Developing an understanding of the forces at work will benefit us by: (1) furthering our ongoing education, (2) protecting our work product, (3) enabling our hard work to remain useful for generations to come, and (4) becoming better stewards of the resources we work with. On many levels, new construction and old construction share common aspects. However, old or existing construction presents certain additional aspects that are the result of the initial choices made, care given, and maintenance provided. It is far more cost effective and environmentally responsible to apply annual maintenance than it is to be forced to intervene with cosmetic or structural repairs down the road. When a need arises that requires repair or reconstruction of log members, the decisions made effect the structure, appearance, aesthetic value and future value of the structure. These decisions should be based on good information and sound principles. It is my intention, during this workshop, to discuss preservation principles and demonstrate some of the means and methods to remedy various maladies I have encountered. Log Structure Engineering With Jennifer Anthony PE In this course I will discuss engineering design considerations unique to log construction: Round section properties and differences in computing stresses full Section vs. sawn Round (maximum cut 0.3R) shear stress for round members shear at coped beam TPI (Timber Products Inspection Inc.) log grading values contact information to order TP log design values: (770) (information may not be reprintedyou must order directly from TPI and sign a release) other log grading agencies and contact information Design considerations handcrafted vs. milled logs log taper and average diameter notched log walls and offset coursing chinked vs. scribed log walls Shrinkage and settlement- design of screw jacks and detailing for settlement Types of screw jacks and ways to hide them Screw jack design Non bearing post and wall detailing Resisting Lateral loads (wind and seismic) in horizontal wall logs IBC Seismic design R value Load resisting methods- wood dowels, steel pins or pipes, through bolts, lag screws, oly or other log screws Typical and not so typical details roof framing, log floor framing, sub floor framing, foundation connections.

On-Site Worksheets Getting the Most from your Builders With Nick Berwian Planning ahead is everything! As production leader of our Russian daughter company Ladoga Log Home, I am in charge of several log structures being built at a time by individual Brigadas, or work crews. Increasingly, this supervising and instructing is accomplished from far away Germany, my native country. What I needed was a powerful device which would enable me to take control over the whole house-building process, even when not being physically on site. The answer was special on-site work-sheets which proved to be very helpful in this task. The idea is to create work plans which don t show individual walls as usual, but, much more practical for the builder, they show each succeeding round of logs on a separate worksheet. The plans contain all information the builder needs: Butt-Top- orientation, lengths of each individual log-piece, header- and sill locations, extended log ends for arches. The person in charge of the project can, by drawing these plans, do all the brain work involved within the log work beforehand ( sitting in his armchair ) and thus eliminate any obstacles which might occur during construction on site. The worksheets provide an almost idiot-proof device a builder can easily build with, no matter how complicated or big the log building is going to be. They are based on very simple windows-drawing devices virtually everybody has already installed on the computer. There is no CAD-knowledge involved at all! Producing those worksheets takes anywhere from 2-10 hours, depending on the project s size. This is time well spend and will pay tenfold out there where time is money! Log Grading With Ed Burke Ed Burke will be joining us again to review Log Grading specifications. Ed Burke has served as technical advisor and Grading Program Instructor for the Log Homes Council Grading Program since During this workshop, Ed will provide an overview of Log Grading specifications. Chainsaw Carving Ask Mike Questions and Answers and Demos With Mike McVay and Susan Miller In this workshop, Mike and Susan will discuss and demonstrate a variety of chainsaw carving challenges and solutions. They will share their knowledge of wood characteristics and reactions to carving; discuss grain stability when a carving is going to be made on a structural piece of wood. Come to this session with your carving questions and problems and let Mike and Susan show you how to turn your carving dreams into reality.

Designing Small Homes With Mira-Jean Steinbrecher INTERNATIONAL LOG BUILDERS ASSOCIATION Designing a small home is an interesting challenge a challenge so many of us face when it comes to conceiving a home for ourselves. In these shifting times, it s also a task more and more clients ask us to perform as they realign their expectations with the realities of shrinking lot sizes, escalating construction costs and diminished resources. In this workshop, we ll outline the issues that arise while conceptualizing a smaller home and explore small home design strategies through a series of questions. How do we: a. select & optimize the site? b. prioritize needs? c. combine functions? d. keep it simple? e. adapt existing plans (especially to log or timber structures)? f. steward resources? g. make it green? h. plan for the future? Come with your thoughts, questions & plans in hand. This will be an interactive session! Tech Talk With John Boys Tech Talk has been a popular feature at conference for years. It is a chance for members to try different jigs and tools, show new techniques and exchange ideas. This year is no exception- we will demonstrate: A variety of milling equipment and accessories Power tool(s) for milling lateral grooves Square chain grinder Innovative timber fasteners Layout fixtures The latest in power tools from our sponsors and others. Shows off your latest invention, get feedback, give input. IT IS ALL ABOUT THE TOOLS! Sketch-up for Timber Framers With Clark Bremmer Google Sketchup is a cad program available free from Google, and is very well suited for modeling timber frame designs in 3D. These are great for demonstrating the design to clients, and for estimating costs. But it s also flexible and accurate enough to use for joinery design and creating shop drawings directly from your whole-frame models. Using custom extensions for Sketchup designed specifically for timber framers (by the

presenter), you can create timber frame models that can be used to automatically generate precise shop drawings. Both timbers and joints are represented as Sketchup components. Successful use of this system will require the user to build up a library of these components that represent the users own joinery style. In this session, we will use the presenter s library to build a sample timber frame including joinery. We will also demonstrate how to make your own timbers from scratch using existing joinery components, and finally, creating joinery components from scratch. The custom extensions also create timber lists for the models, which can be used to derive material lists and project checklists, for example. The timber frame-specific extensions are available at no charge from the presenter. His hope is that others will step forward to contribute their own customizations to create a fullfeatured suite for timber framers. Another goal is for timber framers to share their component libraries with the rest of the timber framing community. Part 2 of the workshop will address compound joinery. This presentation will not be describing the design of compound joinery, but rather how to draw compound joinery in 3D. We assume the attendee is already familiar with the concepts of compound joinery. We will develop the compound timbers and joinery in situ, stating with an existing simple 2-gable model (developed in the previous session), and adding a 3 rd gable bump-out with valleys. We ll start by drawing the actual valley, eave, and ridge lines, and then developing the 3D valleys from those reference lines. We will also verify that the angles on the resulting timbers match those obtained using the Hawkindale formulas. If time permits, we ll add some jack purlins with drop-in pockets. Timber Breakdown Techniques and Maximizing Timber Recovery With Jay Brand Jay will briefly address our present oversupply of logs due to massive bug kill, which will in turn lead to a shortage of same. The main course will cover how to identify and make the tension and compression sections of every log work for you and not against you. Where is the tension in each log? How did it get there and how much is there? Learn to predictably use a log's built-in natural strengths to your advantage for no wasted logs. Whether you are laying round logs or are milling precision timbers you have to know what a log is going to do before you open it up. Also covered will be how to convert #2 and #3 downgrade pieces, crooks, knobby tops etc. into high dollar archways, single natural edge trim, inlet columns, precision pac man corners and much more. Young Growth House Logs and Beams from Habitat Improvement on the Tongass National Forest With Allen Brackley and Scott Snelson Over 400,000 acres of timber has been harvested on the Tongass National Forest since the 1950s. Robust regrowth of stands from these harvested units diminishes habitat quality due to the dense canopy cover produced in these young stands. Forest managers are able to improve habitat quality for old growth dependant species when we thin these stands, allowing greater light and water penetration to the forest floor. The byproduct of this habitat improvement is of very high quality for the house log and beam market. If we can partner with the house log industry to capture the value of this thinning by-product, we will expand our ability to improve habitat while providing economic opportunity to local communities.

Log Builder Support - Aging is a Myth With Ed Shure Back by Popular Demand!!! Some of us can no longer deny the toll that log building and business takes on our bodies. Ed Shure, log builder and timber-framer, is well respected for his knowledge of log and timber structures. In this timely (and unusual for us) workshop he shares his understanding of the structural make-up of our bodies, and takes us through a series of postures and exercises that will help us achieve the long term endurance that we require of our bodies as we plan for a long and healthy life of log building. Log Works Helper - Pricing Program With Dai and John LogWorks Helper is a program designed to produce fast, accurate material take-offs and costing/pricing data for scribed log homes. We know it can help you bid consistently profitable jobs with a high level of confidence. You will run the program in Microsoft Excel- a very powerful spreadsheet program (not included). The program was assembled using Microsoft Visual Basic and can be customized by any experienced Visual Basic/Excel consultant. A basic understanding of Excel is critical to the effective use of this program. While we have attempted to make it as simple to operate as possible there will be a learning curve as you integrate it into your business. Real-World Japanese Tools & Techniques With Takayuki Kida The genius of a carpentry tradition lives variously in builders and buildings, tools and trade secrets; flourishing momentarily here in a famous carpenter, there in an ancient shrine, living everywhere, abiding nowhere. In the tool realm, perhaps no other item so embodies the soul of the woodworker s art as does the Japanese plane. Seemingly a simple block of wood mated with a heavy slab of steel, the modern kanna is in truth the product of a millennium of evolution, a sophisticated and subtle instrument capable of taking shavings a thousandth of an inch thick and turning a board surface into a mirror. Close your eyes and hear the sibilant hiss as the revered temple carpenter pulls his perfectly tuned plane down a plank of flawless Hinoki. But what of the rest of us whose tools are not made by the masters of Miki City, and whose blessings do not include clear Port Orford with laser-straight grain? Tak s intention is to give us a bit of real world knowledge of set-up, maintenance and use of these tools. This session promises to show you not how to make superexpensive Japanese tools perfect, but rather how to make affordable ones perform well on the knotty irregular materials that most of us are working with. Tak will demonstrate techniques to flatten and tune blades and fit them to a plane body. He ll show us how he uses the tools to perform a variety of functions. You ll learn a bit about adapting planes for specialized situations, and celebrate these newfound skills with some informal handson work at the end of the class.

Slide Presentation Japanese Wood Sculpture With Toshio Odate INTERNATIONAL LOG BUILDERS ASSOCIATION Woodworking legend Toshio Odate, is well-known to many of you through his articles in woodworking magazines and his books on Japanese tools and shoji making. This lecture and slide show will introduce us to Odate's successful career as a sculptor and art professor, and an aspect of his work the woodworking world hasn't seen. Log Post and Beam - The Log Builders Hybrid With Pat Clark, Egils Artmanis and Ed Shure Log builders world-wide are experiencing an increasing demand for Post & Beam homes as this style of construction emerges as a major part of the log home market. Many home buyers that would never consider a full log stack home are now looking at Post & Beam for its versatility when decorating and remodeling, ease of finishing, high R-value insulation options, and the possibility of owning a custom handcrafted home at decreased overall cost. Through a slide presentation and panel discussion we will showcase what Post & Beam represents for us; fun joinery work with less time on the chainsaw, a non-settling frame that can be efficiently system-built, the utilization of shorter timber, and flat walls for color and flexibility in finish work. Learn how you can put your existing log building skills to work to meet the demands of this emerging market. Square Rule Layout Instruction With Joel McCarty, TFG This workshop will begin with a history/overview of the various layout systems followed by in-depth discussion and instruction on Square Rule Layout. We are still finalizing additional seminars and workshops so check the ILBA Web Site often for updates on the workshops and seminars that are still to come!
