Her interest in woodturning was inspired through her father Bill Oliver in 2003 and has continued his passion since his demise in Sharon will be demonstrating how to hollow a golf ball, turning it into a small Ring Box. In addition, she will be showing the chucking method in which is used to hold the golf ball while hollowing. A great gift for your favorite golfer, or will sit proudly on your shelf. 4 ... making Good Shavings President's Pen for August 2018 Greetings from Waco. First day of SWAT done and 1 1/2 to go. So far it has been great. Became a part time production turner this month. Agreed to make 15 platters and bowls for a non-profit group I work with. For the first ones I went slow and careful. By the last ones I had sped up significantly and the quality went up as well. Through raffles and a live auction I helped raise almost $1000 dollars and all those who got one were quite pleased. Reach out, there are a lot of people out there that would love one of your well turned bowls. Speaking of well turned bowls, I helped Don York unpack all the beads of courage boxes...wow! 5 2019 MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL BEGINS NOVEMBER 29 WNT 2017 CHRISTMAS BANQUET-DECEMBER 8, 5 PM (SET UP 3 PM) Please add the date to your calendar, share this with your family, and plan to attend. Please note new set up time Pam Thompson will be in charge of the food. Members will be asked to bring either a vegetable, salad, or desert, not two items. Glynn Cox will be in charge of the set up and clean up. He will need your able assistance. AUCTION ITEMS It is time to begin planning for our turnings for the auction. A major portion of the 2019 budget depends on our participation. LATHE, TOOL & WOOD DRAWING AND DOOR PRIZE DRAWING Will once again be a favorite part of the evening. 11 Who s up for a Challenge? Our July challenge was to turn a box for the Beads of Courage program. Thanks to everyone who participated in this project. Several of you turned projects much earlier in the year, and although they didn t count for this challenge, they were very much appreciated. Although this project can be just a plain sphere, it was suggested that some sort of embellishment/s be added to the project. 17 Last Month s Critique Each month we encourage members to bring turnings for constructive criticism. We all learn from this type of critique and hopefully our skills will improve because of it. With our time being limited, only 3 items are chosen each month for critique. All of our members are encouraged to take a hands on look at the Critique table before the meeting begins and ask questions. Those members whose turnings were critiqued at the July meeting were: 1. Larry Roberts - project from deer antler and post oak 2. Jimmy Fife - segmented bowl 3. Mitch Jones - mesquite vase Thanks to Glynn Cox for heading up the monthly critique. 17

18 Beads of Courage is going well. We have 12 turners signed up so far but our Monthly Challenge will give us more. Good turning to you and see you at the August meeting. If you have any completed lidded bowls bring them to the meeting. If your lidded box is not completed no problem as the hospital needs them all year round. Check these sites out on the Internet: 1. 19 Empty Bowls is an annual one-day fund raising event for the Tarrant Area Food Bank. The Food Bank provides food to sister agencies in 13 surrounding counties. The sister agencies then provide the food to needy children and families. Patrons at the Empty Bowls event pay $65 or more and get to choose a bowl (wood, ceramic or glass) to take home and sample food from numerous booths of local restaurants. There are also numerous corporate sponsors that provide a sizeable portion of the total donations. The March 2018 event raised $249,000, which is slightly more than last year. The next Empty Bowls event will be May 1, Greg Stehle got busy last month and turned in 11 bowls. He must have good AC in his shop because those were some hot days. My AC works well until about noon and then I have to get out. We have a total of 79 turned items but have a long way to go to our goal of 300. We had a few cooler days this month so hopefully we will pick up a few more bowls this month. If you are attending SWAT bring some of those ideas back and use them to make some neat items for Empty Bowls.
