Triad Fastener, L.P. will repair or replace at our option any DamSurge Valve product or component that fails in normal use within the 3 year Hassle-Free Warranty period. Product must be returned to an authorized Triad DamSurge Valve dealer or distributor for proper warranty return processing. Product failures due to acts of God including and without limitation to, lightning and flooding, are not covered by this warranty. Labor costs incurred on product failure regardless of fault are not covered under this warranty. Product failures due to mishandling or misapplication of the product are not covered by this warranty. This commitment to repair or replace is our sole and total warranty. Triad Fastener L.P. is not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential damages in connection with the use of equipment, including but not limited to: vegetation loss, the cost of substitute equipment or services required during periods of malfunction or resulting non-use, property damage or person injury resulting from installer s actions, whether negligent or otherwise. ASSEMBLING THE SYSTEM Before you begin to program your SurgeSmart controller you must first mount it to your DamSurge valve. 1. Remove the Control Box from its packaging along with the four mounting bolts. 2. Place the Control Box on top of the surge valve, ensuring that the touch screen of the control box is on the same side of the intake of the valve. 3. The holes in the base of the control box should be lined up with the threaded holes on the top of the valve. Screw the bolts into these holes until the control box is secure. 4. Make sure that the control box is not leaning too far forward an that the motor is engaged by the gear. You are now ready to program your system. 2

4 S urgesmart Controller Technical Bulletin POWER SAVER MAGNET INSTRUCTIONS There are three intended uses for the power saver magnet that is provided with your DamSurge Valve: To enable your system to be delivered with a full battery. When you receive your DamSurge Valve system from your distributer, remove the power saver magnet from the side of the control box. It can now be programed. WARNING: Do not discard your power saver magnet To slow the draining of your battery over long term storage. Place the power saver magnet back on your control box before placing it in storage at the end of the growing season. NOTE: This practice is recommended, but not required. Your system will not suffer any damage if it is stored without the power saver magnet. To recharge your dead battery after long term storage. Place your power saver magnet on the side of your control box, if it was not already placed there for storage, and place the system in the sun for a day. The magnet is only needed for the initial charge of a dead battery, but is required. Once the battery is charged, it can be placed in the field without the magnet and the solar panel will continue to charge and sustain the battery throughout the season. It is recommended that you retain your power saver magnet to insure an initial battery recharge at the beginning of the season. DSV

5 Getting Started S urgesmart Controller Open the cover of the touch screen and wait several seconds for the screen to turn on. You ll see the Triad logo appear, followed by the main menu screen. The main menu allows you to use both pre-programed and manual controls. The manual controls are the buttons with arrows on them that are labeled Switch Left, Switch Right, Left Jog, and Right Jog. The Jog buttons are used to slowly switch back and forth between your left and right positions. The Switch buttons are used to automatically switch between the left and right positions without having to hold the button down the entire time. This setting can be used before or during valve operation. The two buttons a the top of the menu screen that are labeled Water Flow Left and Water Flow Right cannot be selected. They are there to show the direction of the water flow. The arrow will light up green on the side from which the water is flowing. Your SurgeSmart Controller Lithium battery comes fully charged and ready to put in service. Simply remove the Power Saver Switch. Open the cover of the touch screen. Wait several seconds for the screen to turn on. The Triad logo will appear followed by the main menu screen. Now it is time to calibrate the system so the PLC knows where the butterfly is positioned. Using the left or right jog buttons move the butterfly all the way one direction until you hear the butterfly seat. You will know when this is done correctly when the flow direction arrow changes to green and the warning message disappears. 4 Now we are ready to program the DamSurge Valve.

6 SurgeSmart Controller Main Status Screen The main menu allows you to use both pre-programed and manual controls. The two buttons at the top of the menu screen that are labeled Water Flow Left and Water Flow Right cannot be selected. They are there to show the direction of the water flow. The arrow will light up green on the side from which the water is flowing. The manual controls are the buttons with arrows on them that are labeled Switch Left, Switch Right, Left Jog, and Right Jog. This setting can be used before or during valve operation. The warning indicator message signifies a low battery or an obstruction keeping the butterfly wafer from completely sealing. Using the left and right jog buttons may help release any obstacles keeping the butterfly from sealing completely. Internal maintenance may be necessary in dirty water installations. Toggle between English and Spanish. The ON / OFF button engages (turns on) the program. 5

7 Basic Programming of Your System S urgesmart Controller 3 LEVELS OF AUTOMATIC PROGRAMMING Basic Time based automatic butterfly valve. Professional Pick a surge (advance) program and a soak program that best fits your field. Pro-Elite - Use the information from your Pipe Planner or PHAUCET computer generated field design and the system will auto calculate the optimum schedule for your surge and soak schedules. BASIC PAGE Basic allows you to select the right and left side of your field and manually enter the amount of time you wish to water each side. Enter the number of minutes you want in the Left Flow and Right Flow boxes. Then select the red Enter button between the two boxes. The button labeled Delay is an option you can select if you are concerned about water hammer in your system. Selecting this will slow the rotation of the butterfly valve as it moves between its left and right positions. When you finish imputing your preferred settings, select the Back button to return to the main menu then toggle the Off button so it displays On. 6 When you finish inputting your preferred settings, select the Back button to return to the main menu. Select Delay if you are concerned about water hammer in your system. Selecting this will slow the rotation of the butterfly valve as it moves between its left and right positions.

8 S urgesmart Controller Professional Programming of Your System PROFESSIONAL PAGE Professional allows you to select individual Surge and Soak programs based on individual field requirements. Select the Zone and Soak buttons to enter the desired program number then hit Enter. CYCLES FOR EACH PROGRAM: 7

9 Pro-Elite Programming of Your System S urgesmart Controller PRO-ELITE PAGE The Pro Elite page allows you to input the computer aided design information from your Pipe Planner or PHAUCET design plan. Enter your desired time into the boxes labeled Hours and Minutes and select the red Enter button on the top right side of the screen. Once you have entered your system preferences, select the % Check button. This is for fields that are different sizes on each side. The default setting is 50% left and 50% right. By selecting the Right Percent box and entering a value you can change from the default setting of 50% to any percentage that you want. The system will automatically update the Left Percent box for you when you select the red Enter button in the center of the screen. The system will auto calculate and adjust run times based on your percentage input. When you are finished, select the Back button to return to the main menu then toggle the Off button so it displays On. 10 S urgesmart Controller Field Percentage PERCENTAGE PAGE Once you have entered your program preferences, select the % Check button. The % Check setting allows you to program the percentage of time you want water to flow through the left and right side of your valve. This is for fields that are different sizes on each side. The default setting is 50% left and 50% right. By selecting the Right Percent box and entering a value you can change from the default setting of 50% to any percentage that you want. The system will automatically update the Left Percent box for you when you select the red Enter button in the center of the screen. When you are finish, select the Back button to return to the main menu then toggle the Off button so it displays On. The system will auto calculate and adjust cycle run times in both the Surge and Soak modes based on field percentage input. 9

11 Sleep Mode and Finishing Up S urgesmart Controller SLEEP MODE The screen will enter sleep mode if let idle for 1 minute. If your screen goes black simply tap it with your finger to take it out of sleep mode. FINISHING UP Important! After creating your program in the Basic, Pro, or Pro Elite you must engage the on / off toggle button to initiate operation.
