1 Explainer Project Lesson Plan: Inclusion Guidelines Abby Trach Miquelle Thurber Bloem van den Brekel Topic: Narrative as an "academic" tool- How can stories be used as evidence? Strategies for success? Objective of Lesson: - Definition of narrative - What does a narrative consist of? - Different kinds of narrative - Examples of narrative - How can stories be used as evidence? - Visual aid to support our presentation - Class activity to practice their knowledge Prerequisite Knowledge: In order to understand the topic of using narrative as an academic tool, students must first understand what a narrative consists of. Narratives should include an introduction, a plot, characters, a setting, a climax, and a conclusion. Students must also understand the difference between a story and a narrative. Narratives and stories are different, but still related. Stories are much more linear than narratives. Stories must include chronologically unfolding events, however, a narrative does

2 not because it is the representation of events or a series of events. A story can be composed of basic facts, relationships, and events that need to be communicated through a narrative. Lesson Content The first slide of the presentation will answer the question of what a narrative is. Narratives are often anecdotal, experiential, and personal- allowing students to express themselves in a creative and, quite often, moving ways. It often involves focus on the central message or thesis of the story. Also, a narrative is a type of essay which includes a thesis, supporting evidence, and a conclusion. The second slide shows what a narrative consists of. A complete narrative includes: introduction, plot, characters, setting, climax, and a conclusion. Typically, the plot structure of a narrative has an exposition, a rising action, a climax, a falling action, and finally a denouement. The next slide explains the different types of narratives. There are two main types of narratives, fiction and nonfiction. Examples of fiction narratives are comics, plays, and stories. Examples of nonfiction narratives are autobiographies and biographies. The next two slides are examples of narratives. The slide after explains the difference between a narrative and a story. Stories are much more linear than narrative which means the unfolding events happen chronologically. A narrative can be either linear or fragmented which means the story does not have to happen in chronological order. A story can be composed of basic facts, relationships, and events that

3 may need to be communicated through a narrative. The last slide answers the question, how can stories be used as evidence? A story needs to be anomalous which means it represents aspects of life and it represents from what is standard and normal. A story also helps to explain models that are not well explained. It is also good strategy to use a story because a story can be more persuasive because it shows, rather than tells all the facts. We will have a short YouTube video that explains what a narrative is and how to successfully right one. The last slide will have a link to a Kahoot game which will review the material presented in the presentation. Definition / Related Vocabulary : There are several definitions that will be identified in order to help the class understand the topic. In order to know what a narrative is our class needs to know what it consist of. - Introduction: The introduction of an essay presents the topic, it defines it briefly. The introduction should have a hook, to get the attention of the audience. - Plot: a plot is used to describe the events that make up a story, or the main part of the story. - Characters: all stories must have some certain characteristics. Character can be defined as any person, animal, or figure represented in a story. - Setting: the setting of a story tells the time, place and duration of a story. The setting is where the story takes place.

4 - Climax: Climax is a term used to describe the part of a story where the tension is at its highest part, it reaches its highest part - Conclusion: the conclusion is the end of the story. It is used to introduce the final comments. Materials / Resources: YouTube: What is a narrative essay? Discussion Questions : 1. What is the difference between a narrative and a story? 2. What are the different kinds of narratives? 3. What does a narrative consist of? 4. Which definition best describes a narrative? 5. How many parts are included in the narrative plot structure? Class Activity : The class activity that we will do to practice the material that we teach them, is a Kahoot quiz. A Kahoot quiz can include multiple choice questions, true & false questions and short answer questions. By asking different kind of questions, we can practice the knowledge of the class on our topic.

5 1bccbde Research: A narrative is an essay that are often anecdotal, experiential, and personal which allows the student to express themselves in a creative and often moving ways (Baker et al.). There are two types of narratives, fiction and non-fiction which includes novels, comics, and plays (Rehman). A narrative includes an introduction, plot, characters, setting, climax, and a conclusion. It is important to know the structure of a narrative to understand what message the author is trying to convey. A narrative often involves focus on the central message or thesis of the story (Writing a Narrative Essay). There are five events that occur in every narrative: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and denouement (TMD). This helps the reader understand follow what is happening in the essay. A narrative is not the same thing as a story. A story is a subset of a nonfiction narrative. Stories are much more linear than narratives and must include chronologically unfolding events. A narrative on the other hand does not have to be in chronological order because it is the representation of events or a series of events (Szurmak and Thuna). A narrative can be used as evidence because it shows all of the facts of the experience which can be used as persuasive evidence. Visual Aid :

6 Our presentation includes several visual aids. We have included a picture of two different essays, and one is broken down into different parts in order to show the viewer the steps involved in writing a successful narrative. We have also included a visual aid which displays how a narrative progresses from the exposition to the denouement. Our main visual aid is a video located toward the end of our presentation. It includes a brief recap of what a narrative is and how to write one successfully. It goes over a lot of the information that we talk about earlier in the presentation in order to help the audience to retain it better.
