2 What Storyboard is a Storyboard? Examples A"storyboard"helps"an" author"lay"out"the"order" in"which"a"story"will"be" written"or"the"order"in" which"scenes"will"be"shot" for"a"video"production." For"purposes"of"a"PSA,"a" storyboard"allows"the" artist"to"plan"the"order"in" which"scenes"will"be"shot" while"taking"notes"of"any" additional"elements" (music,"narration,"etc.)" that"will"be"used"along"the" way."" Essentially,"a"storyboard" serves"as"an"outline,"or" graphic" representation, "(GoAnim ate)"that"can"be"revised" before"the"actual"video" production"takes"place." What is the Purpose of a Storyboard? A storyboard allows the creator to sequence small segments in order to work towards a final product. In short, a storyboard is another form of mapping or visualizing a final product, much in the same way an author may create an outline. It aids in sequencing, visualization, and planning In a storyboard, the creator breaks a longer piece of work, the final product, down into individual segments. Each window on the board represents a segment, or camera shot. These windows allow the creator to assign: music, sound effects, narration, video, and the like to that single section. Ultimately, by putting the individual sections together, the individual segments stitch together to develop a longer piece of work - such as a video, or for our purposes, a Public Service Announcement (PSA). According to Go Animate, there are three primary purposes to storyboards. They... Share"Your"" Vision"with" Others" Make" Production" Easier" Save"Time" A good storyboard will also allow you to create a video out of sequence. In the case of PSAs, breaking down a 5- minute product into five, one-minute scenes, a creator can work on each single minute (narration, video, etc.) segment in any order and then order them into a final product. Why is Storyboarding Important? Storyboarding, at Serif.com, offers the following: To deliver its message effectively, a video or movie production needs to be well planned. Even a family event video will benefit from planning. Storyboarding helps you to think about how you want your finished movie to look, how the story should unfold, and what shots will best convey your story to your audience. With your storyboard in place, you ll waste less time setting up shots because you ll know exactly what scenes you need to shoot, and where to shoot them from. Storyboarding is especially useful for planning complex sequences of events, saving you from shooting footage you can t use or missing footage that is essential to the plot. 4 Storyboard Templates There is no right or wrong way to create a template. The basic purpose is to organize your thoughts, and at the most basic level, you may want to consider using some of the basic brainstorming elements we use in writing. Those may include: Laying note cards out on a table Creating a large mind map Perform a cluster activity Using PowerPoint slides To get you started, we ve included a detailed step-by-step handout designed specifically for PSAs. However, this very basic sheet is great to get most of you started! On-line Storyboards For those who want to utilize more technological approaches, there are a variety of online storyboards you can use. And in fact, if you are not shooting original film, some of these will allow you to create videos on-line as graphic novels, cartoon formats, and the like.
