1 And Then There Were None Radio Play Project Your group will choose a section (one group per section): Group# Softcover edition 1 Chapters Chapters Chapters 7-9.v 4 Chapters 9.vi-11.i 5 Chapters 11.ii-14.i 6 Chapters 14.ii-16.ii 7 Chapter 16.iii to the end of the Manuscript In your group you must do the following: Read your section List the characters in your section Make a list of key events in your section that you must include Make a list of events that are not vital to the story that you can remove from the episode Make a list of things (descriptions, etc.) that might be best described by the narrator Decide the name, frequency, slogan of your radio station Decide the name of your show sponsor & what one or two products they ll advertise during your show Write a script for your section (see next page for details) Record your episode on an audiocassette, CD, OR digital file (.mp3 or.wav) Digital Files must be clearly named & handed in on labelled USB drives. Groups may perform live with special permission. Total performance should be 6-9 minutes long. All group members need to have a relatively equal speaking role. See Radio Days: A WebQuest at (the source of some of the project details) for more information about Radio Plays.

2 Your script must include (see script format sample): A page listing the cast & crew for your group (blank sheets included) Station Identification your radio station s call numbers & introduction This is separate from your play. Here the broadcasters will talk about the show that is about to come on, as well as the sponsor of the show (a brand name or business you need to make one up. Do not use a real product.). Show introduction Being a series, the show needs an introduction that will lead into the episode: Dialogue Include an introduction to all the characters in your section with brief dialogue from each of them so we will be able to recognize their voices. Include a brief review (by the narrator, etc.) of what happened in the last episode (section of the book). If you are doing the first section, this should be a brief overview of the entire story to come (but don t give away the ending this is just a trailer) As a group, you need to write the dialogue for what each character will say. Don t use just language directly from the novel. Write it in your own words. Sound effects must be placed where they will be used. At least three different sound effects are required. Key information that cannot be given by characters should be given by the narrator/announcer. Commercials Two commercials will interrupt the show at cliffhangers. These commercials will be for the show s sponsors which were mentioned in the station s introduction. (10-15 seconds long). These cannot be for real products. Show s conclusion Join us next week for.. (a brief description of what will happen in the next section; a teaser) Radio station sign-off Back to the broadcasters and what s coming up next on the radio station. DUE DATES: SCRIPT Completion: TAPES/CDs/FILES/PERFORMANCE: at the start of class at the start of class

3 Exemplary 4 Accomplished 3 Developing 2 Beginning 1 Radio Play Elements A cast/crew list, radio station introduction, show introduction, complete story script, commercials, show conclusion and radio station sign off were included. A cast/crew list, radio station introduction, show introduction, complete story script, commercials, show conclusion and radio station sign off were included. Most of a cast/crew list, radio station introduction, show introduction, complete story script, commercials, show conclusion and radio station sign off were included. Some of cast/crew list, radio station introduction, show introduction, complete story script, commercials, show conclusion and radio station sign off were included. X1 Script Story line has a definite plot with a well-defined beginning, middle, and end. Characters are fully integrated into the story. The plot holds the attention of the audience throughout the play. Includes all key events of this section/episode. Commercials are about new products, are highly creative, and sound like real radio advertisements. Story line has an identifiable plot with a recognizable beginning, middle, and end. Characters are somewhat integrated into the story. The plot holds the attention of the audience most of the time. Includes all key events of this section/episode. Commercials are about new products, contain some elements of creativity, and are recognizable as radio advertisements. The plot of the story line was attempted but the beginning, middle, and end were not consistently recognizable. Characters are integrated very little into the story. The plot holds the attention of the audience some of the time. Includes most key events of this section/episode. Commercials are about new products, but creativity needs more development. The plot of the story line is not easily identified. Integration of characters into the story is not present. The plot does not hold the attention of the audience. Includes some or few key events of this section/episode. Commercials are about an existing product. Very little original thought was included in the commercials. X4 Radio Play Performance Play was very entertaining and held the attention of the audience throughout the performance. Few to no errors were made in the performance of the script. Sound effects were well integrated. Transitions between segments were smooth. Tone enhances the mood of the story. Very easy to tell characters apart (excellent pitch, accent variety). Play was entertaining and held the attention of the audience during most of the performance. Some minor errors were made in the performance of the script. Sound effects were somewhat integrated. Transitions between segments had little hesitation. Tone suits the mood of the story. Easy to tell characters apart (good pitch, accent variety) Play was moderately entertaining and held the attention of the audience during some of the performance. Some major errors were made in the performance of the script. Integration of sound effects was attempted but did not always achieve success. Transitions between segments were choppy. Tone may suit the mood of the story. Somewhat difficult to tell characters apart (some pitch, accent variety) Play was not very entertaining and did not hold the attention of the audience during the performance. Many major errors were made in the performance of the script. Integration of sound effects was poor. Transitions between segments were poor. Tone rarely suits the mood of the story. Hard to tell characters apart (little to no pitch, accent variety) X5

4 Title on Each Page SAMPLE OF RADIO PLAY SCRIPT FORMAT Page No. AMBIENCE: 1950'S SCIENCE LAB BACKGROUND, WITH ELECTRICAL BUZZES AND BUBBLING CHEMICALS. ESTABLISH PLACE WITH THESE. DON'T TELL HOW TO MAKE SOUNDS, JUST WHAT YOU HEAR. LET THE DIRECTOR FIGURE IT OUT. 1. Little Frieda: So this is what a radio script looks like, eh, Dr. Ambrose? 2. Dr. Ambrose: Yes. Some directors number each speech, though some used to number each line. The line or speech numbers are for the director and the actors. They can write notes in the margins on both sides. 3. Blue Knight: But for in-house stuff we don't really need the numbers, right Doc? Mostly for long scripts? 4. Dr. Ambrose: That's right. Also notice that the body of the speech is indented from the character name, so the reader can quickly find her part. The speech is written in a narrow column and a sans serif font to make it easier to read. 5. SOUND EFFECT: EFFECTS AND OTHER STAGE DIRECTIONS ARE WRITTEN IN ALL CAPS, (SOMETIMES BOLD OR UNDERLINED) TO EASILY DISTINGUISH THEM FROM SPOKEN LINES. MUSIC TRANSITIONS WORK THE SAME WAY. PHONE RINGS, IS PICKED UP. 6. Little Frieda: Hello? 7. Galactic Poohbah:(ON PHONE) Hello, Little Frieda. I'm calling just to show you how to indicate special effects done to voices. 8. Little Frieda: But if effects are written in all caps, what do you do if you want to emphasize dialogue? 9. Dr. Ambrose: You underline them, you busibody! Notice I didn't include a stage direction, telling the actor how to say this line. That sort of thing should be implicit in the dialogue, and only written in when it would not be obvious. 10. Blue Knight: I see. Reading of the lines is left up to the director and the actors' interpretation of what's written. 11. Dr. Ambrose: And only copy on one side of the page, too. Also, keep lines together. Don't let a speech run over onto the next page. It opens the door to pauses when Version No. or Printing Date
