Preface The tenth academic forum of Green Textile Composites was successfully held under the effort of teachers and students at Textile College and International Education College.Green Textile Composites is researched extensively at home and aboard. It is very valuable to understand, study and research textile composites for Textile Engineering Major students. It is very meaningful to learn knowledge, research and practice in China for foreign students. The purpose of the forum is to make the foreign students collect information on bast or bast composites on the basis of learning and practicing.the foreign students would show their achievements after group discussion and date organization. They would communicate with

teachers and students. Then they could learn more knowledge about bast composites. In addition, the forum not only provides a good learning platform, but also set up a opportunity to mutual understanding and show themselves between foreign students or students and teachers. It can improve their team spirit and their interest in bast composites. The forum could held successfully depends on Dr.Wang Chunhong s performing herself. And other teachers and students effort make the forum held successfully in cheerful atmosphere.

Table of Content Introduction Ramie Processing Applications of Ramie Conclusions

Introduction

Introduction Ramie fibre, also known as China grass, grass linen or Chinese silk. Ramie fibre is one of the strongest and longest natural fine textile fibres in the world. It is a bast fibre derived from the bast layer of the stem, that is, phloem of the vegetative stalks of the plants. China, mainly the central and southern part, leads the world in the production of ramie.

History Egypt Mummies China Europe, Other countries

Taxonomy genus family Boehmeria Nettle OR Urticaceae Order Urticales class Magnoliopsida

Main spices of ramie Green ramie or B. utilis is said to give higher fibre yield and stronger fibre than B. nivea, although the fibre quality is not so good in regards to its fineness and color

Origins Nettle family Urticaceae is a native of the Far East and probably originated in the mountain valleys of southwestern China. China, mainly the central and southern part, leads the world in the production of ramie. Other major producers of ramie fibre are Japan, Taiwan, Brazil, the Philippines, Korea, Indonesia and India

Cultivation and Harvesting Ramie is easy to cultivate and thrives in almost any soil. It can be propagated by seeds, cuttings or layers, or by root separation. Ramie is intolerant of wet soils. It does best in areas with high temperatures and high humidity plus a rainfall of 1100 cm evenly distributed throughout the year. It is a perennial crop with a life of 6 to 20 years. Two to four harvests per year are possible It is harvested as the stems turn brown. Harvesting is done just before or soon after the onset of flowering.

Cross Section of the ramie Stem Ep = epidermis C = cortex BF = bast fibres P = phloem X = xylem Pi = pith

Ramie Processing

Decortication+washing

Ramie Processing Stripping consists of removing all the phloem (including the fibres), some parenchyma and some outer bark. R i b b o n i n g c o n s i s t s o f r e m o v i n g t h e o u t e r bark/epidermis and the bast from the woody core of the stem; in fact the entire cortex is removed. The cortex or bark is removed, either by hand or machine, in a process called de-cortication. The second stage involves scraping the cortex to remove most of the outer bark, the parenchyma in the bast layer and some of the gums and pectins. The third stage involves washing, drying and degumming of the residual cortex material to extract the spinnable fiber.

Ramie in five stages

Fibre Apperance Ramie fiber is very durable white in colour and has a silky luster. It is reported to have a tensile strength eight times that of cotton and seven times greater than silk. it lacks resiliency and is low in elasticity and elongation potential. Ramie fiber is known especially for its ability to hold shape, reduce wrinkling

Spinning process flow Diagram of ramie fibre raw ramie material degumming process degummed ramie

Spinning process flow Diagram of ramie fibre drawing frame ramie flyer making ramie spinning frame

Spinning process flow Diagram of ramie fibre ramie coning process finished ramie yarn on cones

Applications of Ramie Apparel dresses, suits, skirts, jackets, pants, blouses, shirts, children wear, mixed with cotton in knitted sweaters Fashion curtains, draperies, upholstery, bedspreads, table linens, sheets, dish towels Sewing threads Handkerchiefs Parachute fabrics Woven fire hoses Narrow weaving Canvas Filter cloth When used in a mixture with wool, shrinkage is reported to be greatly reduced when compared with pure wool. Short waste fibers are used for the production of high quality papers, such as bank notes & cigarette papers. Textile Composites

Advantages and disadvantages of ramie as a fabric Advantages Resistant to bacteria, mildew, and insect attack Extremely absorbent. Dyes fairly easily. Increases in strength when wet. Withstands high water temperatures during laundering. Smooth lustrous appearance improves with washing. Keeps its shape and does not shrink. Can be bleached. Disadvantages low in elasticity, lacks resiliency, low abrasion resistance, Wrinkles easily, stiff and brittle.

Conclusions Ramie Fiber is Natural, Plant and Bast Fiber One of the oldest fiber found in history Extracted from the stem of the plant High tensile strength Used as composites, home textile and clothing Widely used as composite material

What is the bamboo fiber? Bamboo fabric is a natural textile made from the pulp of the bamboo grass. Bamboo fabric is very soft and can be worn directly next to the skin. Bamboo is highly water, absorbent, able to take up three times its weight.

Bamboo fabric production Bamboo fabric is natural textile that has been growing in popularity in recent years, both for its quality and its environmental friendliness. Bamboo can be spun pure or blended with other materials such as cotton, chemical fibers and others.
