Water... Make A Rain-stick Cardboard tube, beads/rice/beans (to make the rain sound), pipe cleaner, card, Sellotape, decorations 1. Cut 2 circles out of the card, cut around the edge to create a fringe. 2. Attach one circle to one end of the tube using the Sellotape. 3. Twist the pipe cleaner into a spiral and add the beads/rice/beans. 4. Attach the other circle to the other end. 5. Create some music with your rain stick. Shaving Cream Rain Clouds Clear glasses/vases/bowls, food colouring, shaving cream, small bowls/containers, water, ¼ tsp measuring spoon 1. Fill the small containers with water and add some food colouring. 2. Fill a clear glass 2/3 full of water. 3. Top it with a lot of shaving cream. 4. Use the measuring spoon to drop the different colours of water onto the shaving cream cloud. The colours saturate the shaving cream and once the clouds are full they produce rain. Cloud In A Jar A jar with a lid, 1/3 cup hot water, ice, hairspray 1. Add the hot water to the jar, swirl it around to warm up the sides. 2. Place the lid upside down on the mouth of the jar and place ice cubes on the lid, wait approximately 20 seconds. 3. Remove the lid and quickly spray some hairspray into the jar and replace the lid with the ice still on top. 4. Watch the cloud form. Flood Barriers A paper cuboid (you can use the template for the fundraising box), several trays, various items to create barriers 1. Split the s into teams and get them to create a cuboid. 2. Place the cuboid in the centre of the tray. 3. Give the s 10 minutes to create a barrier around their cuboid that will prevent it from being damaged. 4. After 10 minutes, fill the trays with a cup of water and see how long it takes for the cuboid to disintegrate! EXPERIMENT DID YOU KNOW? Set up two tables so that they angle downwards and place something at the bottom to collect the water. Place a fleece blanket (preferably green) on one table to represent grass and leave the other smooth. Pour water down the table and observe how quickly the water descends into the valley below. Floods occur when water overflows onto dry land. They have always been a part of life on Earth but they can be dangerous. Most flooding is caused by heavy rain over a long period of time, which then causes the water levels to rise over the banks.
Earth... Lemon Volcanoes Lemons, bicarbonate of soda, food colouring, lollipop sticks, washing up liquid, trays, cups and spoons 1. Leaders, slice the bottom off the lemon so that it sits flats, then cut off the other end and slice out the core. 2. Place the lemon on the tray and use the lollipop stick to must the inside and create more juice. 3. Add a squeeze of washing up liquid and food colouring to the lemon as well as 1 tsp of bicarbonate of soda. 4. Watch the volcano go! Avalanche Dominoes, cardboard boxes, playing cards or similar. 1. In their Sixes, the cubs build a wall or structure using their chosen media. 2. The cubs must then cause an avalanche by various methods, blowing, wafting or by shaking the table. They are not allowed to touch the structure. 3. Each Six should rotate to the next station and repeat the exercise. Earthquake Proof Structures Straws, paper-clips, Blu tack, string, scissors, cardboard squares (approx. 25cm by 25cm) 1. Tell the they are to build a structure that can withstand an earthquake on the cardboard squares. 2. Give them 5 minutes to create their structures and then shake the cardboard for approx. 15 seconds. 3. Give them 2 minutes to make any alterations to see if it can stand for longer this time. 4. Shake the cardboard for another 15 seconds. What do they notice this time? DIY Seismograph Felt-tip pen, plastic ruler, masking tape, something heavy (e.g. a can of soup), paper to be drawn on 1. Put the paper on the table. 2. Tape the marker to one end of the ruler so it makes an L shape. 3. Place the heavy object nearby and tape the ruler to the side so the felt-tip is just touching the paper. 4. Try gently shaking the table. What happens? 5. Who can make the largest recording on your DIY seismograph? EXPERIMENT DID YOU KNOW? Place two strips of cloth lying parallel in a box (these represent the tectonic plates), cover both with soil (to represent the Earth s crust). Place some houses on the soil to create a town (make sure some are placed on the fault line). Have 2 volunteers pull the strips of cloth apart. What happens to the town? Earthquakes happen when 2 large pieces of the Earth s crust suddenly slip, this causes shock waves to shake the surface of the Earth in the form of an earthquake. They usually occur on the edges of the tectonic plates (the fault lines).
Wind... DIY Windsock A sheet of tissue paper per person, some cardboard, glue, sellotape, crayons, a stick, string 1. Glue a strip of cardboard down the width side of the tissue paper. 2. Decorate your tissue paper as you like, then put a line of glue down one of the lengths of the tissue paper. 3. Fold the cardboard into a circle and attach the tissue to the other edge of the paper. 4. Wait for it to dry and attach a stick. You can also cut the bottom half of the tissue into strips. DIY Natural Wind-chimes Some sticks/pinecones, sandpaper, paint, string 1. Collect some sticks or pinecones, strip the bark off the sticks and rub down with sandpaper (if using pinecones, you will still need 1 stick). 2. Paint the stick(s) in bright colours. 3. Tie some string around one end of the sticks (or your pinecones) and attach them to your longest stick. 4. Hang them outside and enjoy. Wind-power Race Pom poms, feathers, beads, beans, dried pasta, ping pong balls, cotton wool balls etc. 1. Group the into 4 teams. 2. They are to choose their item from the selection you have provided. 3. Have a relay race between the teams where they must use their breath to push their items. 4. First team back wins! Wind-power Race Pom poms, feathers, beads, beans, dried pasta, ping pong balls, cotton wool balls etc. 1. Group the s into 4 teams. 2. They are to choose their item from the selection you have provided. 3. Have a relay race between the teams where they must use their breath to push their items. 4. First team back wins! EXPERIMENT DID YOU KNOW? Fill a large bowl a little over half full with water and stir the contents counter-clockwise with a wooden spoon. Tie a paper-clip to a piece of string and add the paper clip to the swirling water. You can observe where the strongest winds are in a hurricane by observing the motion of the paper-clip. Hurricanes, Cyclones and Typhoons are all the same weather phenomenon, the different names tell us where the storms occur. In the Atlantic and Northeast Pacific they are called hurricanes, in the Northwest pacific they are called typhoons and in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean they are called cyclones.

Global... Endangered Animals Paper, card, pens scissors, elastic. Learn about endangered animals and transform your Colony into endangered animals by making masks or costumes. Why are they endangered and how could we save them? You might include polar bears, Siberian tigers, white rhinos, mountain gorillas and loggerhead sea turtles. Where s It From? Map of the world Identify five belongings of yours that have come from other countries. Point out the countries on a map. Talk to others about why your belongings have come from so far away. Disaster Aid News cuttings, online news articles, photos and videos. Investigate a recent natural disaster by looking at photos, news articles or videos online. Decide in small groups what five things were needed to help people after the disaster. Decide as a Troop how best you can help when a natural disaster happens. Homelessness Cardboard, tape, etc. Visit a homeless shelter, foodbank or other social enterprise in your local community and consider the challenges faced by homeless people and what factors lead to homelessness. Or Using cardboard, build a shelter and camp out in your local area to understand and experience the challenges faced by homeless people. CAN YOU NAME... DID YOU KNOW? How many countries can you name where ShelterBox has sent help in times of need? ShelterBox has helped people in over 75 countries in the world, including England when there were floods in Cornwall one Christmas.
Teamwork... Build It Tall Plastic/paper cups, 5 pieces of string tied to an elastic band (as many as the number of teams) 1. Split the s into teams of Each member of the team will be responsible for one of the pieces of string tied to the elastic band. 3. The aim is to build the tallest possible tower of cups, only moving the cups using the elastic band and string. Fingertip Hula-Hoop A hula-hoop, several cubs 1. Split the s into teams and get them to stand in a circle facing each other with their arms extended in front of them. 2. Place a hula-hoop on their fingertips. 3. The aim is to lower the hula-hoop to the ground as quickly as possible without dropping it. 4. Challenge the s to see if they can do it quicker a second time. Sneak Peek A Lego (or junk) creation, enough supplies for 3 teams to recreate this creation, a sheet 1. Leaders are to create something using Lego or junk, keep it covered, at a distance, from the teams. 2. Split the into teams. Begin the game by showing the structure to the, but they must keep their distance. 3. One member from each team is allowed to come and examine the structure for 10 seconds before returning to their team, they then have 25 seconds to instruct the group on how to recreate it. 4. After one minute of trying the next person from each team can go, this is to continue until a team recreates the structure. Bunjee-Tastic A stop watch per team, one piece of strong elastic/bungee cord per team 1. Split the s into teams of appropriate sizes. 2. Tie the bungee so that it makes a circle. 3. Place the bungee on the floor in front of each team. 4, The team is to pass every person through the bungee hoop without the person touching the bungee cord in the quickest time possible. Note: The person passing through the hoop cannot touch the cord, but the rest of the team members can. CAN YOU EARN... DID YOU KNOW? Can you use some of these ideas and earn your Teamwork Challenge Badges? In May, we have lots of teams who participate in tasks around the city of Liverpool. A lot of our tasks involve teamwork and we hand out extra points for superb teamwork!
