The gallery plays host to a number of works, all wrestling with different aspects of the material, and manages to arrange them in a way that provokes dialogue between the works without it being overwhelming. There is a mixture of surprising and expected responses to working with paper. There are several works which draw out the abstract potential within the everyday, including Restaurant Drawing (Buren Again) by Jonathan Monk. The work is a seemingly ordinary receipt but with bold, vertical lines inscribed at the bottom, a miniature version of Daniel Buren s legendary stripes. Buren is known for inserting the abstract into the everyday, often via interventions. In Monk s work, the abstract makes its mark by directly printing itself on to the everyday. It s impossible to discuss works featuring paper without discussing the potency of the mark. A single drawn line or a typed word has the potential to dramatically change the world, whether it s Paul Klee s revolutionary notion of a line is a dot that went for a walk or the typed words and handwritten signature of a president s executive order. A mark on a piece of paper can start a world war or begin a line that becomes a sketch of exploring language and mark. Also on show is one of Wolfgang Tillmans paper drops, Paper Drop (Shadow). This beautifully simple work, a photograph of a photograph, is a masterpiece in everyday structure, light and image. It also creates an interesting dialogue with a work by Samara Scott. I first encountered Scott s work at Frieze in Her works are sinkholes for the detritus of the modern age, a gathering of lip gloss and glitter in the sewer. Like the work I saw at Frieze, Bruise is also set in the floor but this work is far less glittery or decadent. Instead the work is a putrid colour scheme of chartreuse, ultramarine and sea green, and is formed of toilet paper, Bloo cistern block, packaging card and turmeric. The folds and curves in the work present a structural echo of Tillmans work. The work obviously provides a link to the everyday we all encounter a toilet during our day but it also directly engages with the world outside of The Sunday Painter. The work subtly ripples and responds to the pulse of Peckham, which during my visit included building work outside of the gallery. It s a reminder that these works cannot be entirely separated from the world outside and placed in a white cube, and nor should they be. Published on 9 May 2017 Related Articles

6 May 2017 Artworks London 13/5/2017 Assorted Paper Artworks London Exhibition Review Assorted Paper By Ned McConnell ( Advertisement ( eld.com/) Advertisement ( The Sunday Painter, London 31 March 13 May 2017 In an age so frequently de ned by technology, we often hear about the pervasive nature of the digital, particularly in contemporary art. So it was refreshing to visit an exhibition that investigates the myriad forms of one of the most ubiquitous non-digital technologies of all time: paper. 1/6

7 Eva Hesse, better known for works using latex, fibreglass or plastic, here presents a small, delicate ink on paper work, Untitled (1961). The ambiguous image of a figure approaching a window or an eye was part of a body of work that informed her later, better known practice. Her work with latex and fibreglass later in her career reveals an obsession with the bodily, her works often mimicking the fleshy matter which comprises our physical form. Credited with being invented in China in the early 2 Century AD, the stability, accessibility and malleability of paper are compelling properties for an artist and have helped it remain an irresistible medium for all these centuries. Assorted Paper is a neatly packaged, digestible response to an entertaining premise, encouraging us to reassess our assumptions about this ancient medium. nd who takes it to the most private of realms. Scott s typically surprising use of materials is played out here within one of her characteristic pools, Bruise (2017), this time combining a soggy, melting mass of toilet paper with turmeric and cistern bloo block. Away from squelchy, bodily crevices, Leo Fitzmaurice continues the use of the everyday, arranging discarded Tesco flyers on the floor in an hypnotic, looping cascade. Just as the number of advertising images seen on a daily basis is dazzling, so is Fitzmaurice s composition here, however his abstraction of the content inverts their primary function. 8 On the other side of the space is a Wolfgang Tillmans work, Paper Drop (Shadow) (2006). Here, Tillmans investigates paper s relationship with abstraction, exploring its fine quality and interaction with light. His treatment of photographic in particular, bringing out the sculptural qualities of the medium. The resulting display celebrates the ubiquity of paper, the far-reaching uses of it and its versatility in the hands of inventive artists. paper as a subject takes the medium into the material and sculptural, again testing our assumptions. Mira Schendel s two hanging works, Untitled (from the series Minimal lines/linhas minimais) (1964) and Untitled (from the series Religious writings/escritas cheias religiosas) (1965), float Ned McConnell ( is a curator based in London and contributing editor to Artworks London Editorial. above the floor and these delicate works on rice paper represent a catalysing moment in the artist s practice when, in the early 60s, she received the paper as a gift and went on to produce over 2000 drawings in little over a year. By focusing on artists that have a deep understanding of paper in all its forms, Assorted Paper unpacks and recontextualises the medium through a series of surprising and elegant works.
